A lot of people have been asking who the hell Anthony Mundine is & why he is targeting a showdown with Floyd Maywether Jr. Well here is his story:
Anthony Mundine was the biggest star and highest paid player in the NRL (National Rugby League) which is like the Australian version of NFL in terms of popularity. He left in 2000 mid-season due the politics of the game & racisim and turned pro boxer at age 25 with no prior experience.
He was a Super Middlewight for most of his career. His biggest fights were against Mikkel Kessler, Danny Green, Antuwn Echols, Daniel Geale, Shane Mosley & Sven Ottke. He captured the WBA 'regular' title twice, the IBO middleweight title (doesn't really count) and the WBA interim junior middleweight title.
All his 51 pro fights have been on PPV and he has made a career and big money fighting 'Aussies'. People in Australia pay big money to see him because he is an entertainer, trash talker and can sell fight really well. He is not afraid of the 'bad guy' image. It is true that most people don't like him down under because of his outrages comments and remarks - but people still pay to watch.
No doubt he was a great athlete and possessed talent as a boxer. He could of been on level with Andre Ward and other top super middleweights and middleweights but he never stepped up competition earlier in his career.
Australian boxing is a joke. Any trash card is PPV worthy.

$30 for the GGG fight and how about $50 for the Geale-Wood mega fight.
More to do with tight ass, greedy cable company and the fact that there's only one, so they have a monopoly.
We used to get good fights on normal cable when there was 2 cable companies, but now everything ppv cos they don't wanna pay to show it.
I just don't know who's buying them cos I don't and I'm the biggest boxing fan I know.
He wasn't near those guys, he only played origin once and was on the bench for most of it and didn't get picked again. He was good but not at the very top level.
Ok that shows the top players with enough training could have success in Boxing.
Wasn't he among the best? I can't really remember. Which players would you compare him to now? I don't think he got to the level Hayne, Inglis, Slater and Sonny Bill got to. But maybe he would have if he stayed around.
I think he did really well in boxing considering the lack of experience he has.

Actually crazy all his fights are on PPV if true

Getting to the level he has in two sports is quite an achievement for sure, but he wasn't that good at league and isn't that good at boxing.

Mundine is one of the best athletes Australia has had.

lol, no he wasn't even close. Was at best marginally top 50 at his best. He was well known though but not the biggest star either. Also Australian Rules is more popular than the NRL which is only played in 2 states.

Mundine did better than any of the American Football athletes who transitioned to Boxing in recent years, he came from Rugby League and transitioned to Boxing. That shows how much talent there is in Australia and the Football codes.
Rubbish ...he left the NRL because he was bitter at not being selected for state of origin!!! It wasn't rascisim it was because there was better players in his position !!! And he couldn't accept it. Just like boxing he claims to be the best thing since slice bread but every time he steps up to the plate to fight someone of quality he gets his ass handed to him (with the exception of the green fight that he won hands down, I had ringside seat and he fought the good fight and deserved to win)as for the Kessler fight I also had ringside seats and he could have finished it with a win if he didn't show boat when he had him on the ropes .
ALI he isn't
Its true, every fight on ppv, but then every fight above espn level is ppv here.
Im not sure who buys these fights though, I've never met anyone who's bought a Mundine ppv other than the Green fight which was huge here.
I don't live in NRL territory though, so it must the Rugby league crowd who aint too bright anyway.
hahahah fair point
he's an Aussie star but doesn't pull overseas
This is pretty much spot on, mundine stepped up pretty quick but then found his level. He was a good to very good fighter but never on the elite level.
I odn't think that is entirely true is it? I know all his fights have been on Aussie TV but not on PPV unless I'm wrong.
A sad representation of Muslims and since then Mundine has regretted making these comments, he even tried explaining them.

That's not entirely true. He actually stepped his competition up too early, fighting Ottke in only his 10th pro fight with no previous experience.
He then fought Kessler in about his 20th. The problem was that he realised he could keep making a lot of money without fighting guys that he could easily lose to, and so has kept his competition at the domestic level basically since Kessler.
He stepped up early enough. That wasn't the problem. The problem was that he didn't stay at that level, and has been making too much money against soft touches for much too long.
The best guys he fought were all at the start of his career (apart from Geale, but he was still just a top domestic guy at the time). The entire second half has been nothing but lots of talk and no walk.

Oh, and for those who aren't aware (especially Americans), Mundine said after the 9/11 attacks... "They call it an act of terrorism, but if you can understand religion, and our way of life, it's not about terrorism. It's about fighting for God's law, and America's brought it upon themselves". Mundine is a Muslim.

I don't think he would ever get a fight with Floyd for the following reasons:
1. Floyd doesn't know who he is
2. Mundine isn't big enough in the USA and won't give Floyd a big payday like he had with Alvarez
3. Mundine is way too big and strong for Floyd and probably just as fast. Floyd wouldn't take the fight even if Mundine was a mandatory.
In saying that, I do think Mundine would easily beat the likes of Carlos Molina, Canelo Alvarez. A fight with Lara is a close call but I'd say Lara would be too craft for Mundine and his age will catch up to him.
If Mundine was a big enough draw Floyd would fight him and annihilate him. Mosley threw that fight, it was obvious, had it been 3 years before that and Mosley would have wiped the floor with him, canelo and Molina would whoop him as we'll. Mundine is a bum, c+ at best.
