He is a lot like Chavez. He always coming forward on the attack but he does not get hit much. He seems to have a great chin like Chavez. He has good stamina and a high work rate like Chavez. He has good combos to the head and body like Chavez. Chavez was a two handed puncher and he could hurt and KO fighters with punches to the head and body. GGG is a bigger puncher than Chavez and knocks out everybody he fights.
I think Golovkin will struggle at 168. His power will not have the effect it has on smaller guys and you got bigger, and many faster guys at 168 and 175, but he is fun to watch.
They're both boxer/punchers in the purest sense of the term, so they're similar in that regard, but anybody that would legitimately try to compare the two on a technical level is naive at best and ignorant at worst.
A prime Julio Sr. is hands down the superior fighter : He was more experienced professionally and much more conscious (and talented) defensively.
I get that you cunts love Golovkin (I do, too), but this comparison is way too premature.
Their control of distance while aggressive and body punching are similar. Chavez is much more defensively sound while Golovkin is better at actually cutting off the ring. Golovkin is very good and just a level below Ricky Hatton (yes I said it) of having the ability to get in a guys face quickly in the past 30 years. That is why so many guys panic when fighting him, they cannot catch a breather no matter how much they try.
Golovkin, like Chavez, will have trouble against guys with really fast hands.
Is this the closest to Chavez sr's style as we got today? Anyone else worth mentioning? Anyone agree or disagree?
Chavez fought good fighters using that style. GG fights bums, and HBO finally said enough is enough, and won't broadcast his next fight, lmao.
Sorry, lads...
But don't have the slightest clue on what the "Soviet old boxing school" is about...
That's precisely why you are looking at Chavez Sr. for similitudes... Chavez Sr. was a unique mixture of Mexican and U.S. old school...
(As about the "Soviet old boxing school"... Does anybody happen to know anything on fighters such as Vyacheslav Lemeshev or Igor Vysotsky?... I'm not Russian and I not rooting for any particular "Russian" fighter -- but I've followed their "school" over the years... My compatriots had very tough fights with them in the past...)
Yes style wise he's comparable to Sr. at least offensively that is. Defensively he's never displayed the head or waist movement that made Chavez a good defensive fighter possibly a great one considering his aggressive style.
Chavez Sr defense was actually very solid especially for his style of fighting. He had good head movement. He could slip punches and roll with them. Chavez doesn't get a lot of credit for his defense. He's underrated in that respect.
I like this video. It shows a little bit of what he could do defensively.
People are used with toe-to-toe Mexican sluggers -- as regarding his defence skills, Chavez Sr. is the chief notable "exception that proves the rule"...
Golovkin's defence skills are more purist and they display minimalism as regarding the "show"... Golovkin is almost totally "hiding" his defence under the "mobile power" approach...

Yup. Chavez Sr was possibly as good as you can get defensively with his style. Easy to underrate him though as he was such a punishing fighter. Ggg is obviously sr lite right now in that hes very similar. Sure, his defense is nowhere near Chavez's right now but maybe someone will make him show that side of himself. I think Chavez seemed a bit more "natural" in his approach and Ggg seems a bit more machine like (not necessarily a bad thing as hes very sharp and methodical which is what I mean). I'm not sure GGG will develop as well defensively in that style but he has other tools we'll likely see him have to use or develop over time..
Chavez Sr's sense of distance was really impressive...
Chavez is a slow plodder with out much defence. GGG has a lot more power, not as strong as Chavez but a better boxer.you're on crack...........golovkin is much lesser of a boxer then chavez and also pfp has less power. golovkin pfp is actually a lot slower then chavez.............

i always thought that chavez had extremely underrated defensive ability.
as with a lot of greats who had reputations for being "brawlers," chavez wasn't all that easy to hit, especially flush.
Without a doubt, his defense was really good. Not great but really good. Just not in the mold of what I assume people think a great defensive fighter should be.
