I have a terrible feeling that the mythical creature, that is Guillermo Rigondeaux will fall into obscurity.
I seriously can't comprehend anyone that says rigo is boring. The guy boxed donaire to the point he had him running. Agbeko was too afraid to trade, the guy is untouchable. I hope unlike the treatment lara gets, GBP sign him up so then he can give every fighter on their roster a pure beating.
What do you guys think will he fall into obscurity?
Poll to come.
he's already unknown. That Donaire fight should have never been made, too bad Arum is one greedy fvck to have made Donaire-Mares, the real fight everyone wanted to see.
No disrespect to Rigo, but lets get real here, even if he did fight a somewhat entertaining style he would still be unknown. For one, he fights in the lower weights, he's Cuban and he can't speak English. He' s a non-entity.He's known by millions a two time Olympic/World Champion, he was on the front page of every major news paper and on the internet when he defected in South America a few years ago
Rigo is defensively skilled but his offense leaves a lot to be desired. His ability stops other fighters from actively throwing punches, recently Donaire and Agbeko suffered similar fates but we have to remember two things:
1. Donaire looked even worse in his come back fight, which shows that he seems to be lacking the desire and the physical/mental ability to push on. He may well be a shot fighter now. Did Rigo do that to him? Possibly. Could Rigo have stopped a fighter like that? Yes, he should have, many great fighters have finished off rivals when the time called for it. Leonard made a career of it.
2. Agbeko was never a great fighter or even close to it, he was a B level slugger at best yes Rigo treated him with too much respect and caution. That's his style and mentality, but it won't make him great and it damn sure won't make him marketable.
I think its hard for people to gravitate towards rigo because he's so cerebral. His boxing acumen is so retardedly high that it may as well be considered a superpower. He is a boxing god among men, so much so that our own mortality blinds us from witnessing the true beauty behind his craft.
Ali Raymi is a c0cksucker gtfo here n00b
The problem isn't his style, not for true fans of this sport. Rigondeaux's issues are the fact he speaks zero English and appears to have almost no personality. In boxing you have to be able to sell yourself outside the ring as well as inside. he has the inside down to a science but as a fan I feel no other attachment to him, so I can only imagine the casual fan that watches the sport for tantalizing KOs.
His size is a huge factor too - everyone knows opportunities and big money for guys fighting south of 130 are hard to come by to start with.
If Rigo fought with the same style at 175 I bet he wouldn't catch half the flack he does. Chad Dawson never took much criticism for boxing his way to wins in unremarkable fashion and he is nowhere near as skilled.
Couple that with the lack of English you pointed out and it's worst case scenario on all ends. He can't even open his mouth and defend himself.
If Arum really pushed to make Rigo a star he'd be a star, its that simple. In boxing they chose who they make a star. Of course you got those exceptions one like Hopkins.
SlipStream: saying Mayweather is an act when the cameras are on is half true. He blows up easy with his temper, him talking sht to his dad on 24/7 was not for camera but just how childish he really is. You seen how in a interview this year he went baserk when asked if he thinks Pac is back and will he fight him? Floyd said his health is number 1. Floyd still keeps it ghetto, its just half his persona.
I do believe there is a roughness to Mayweather but I'm not buying that BS on 24/7 as some sort of reality. Maybe I've become somewhat jaded because reality television is somewhat of a glut right now but I think I can differentiate between who he might be and a "ghetto" persona he's conjured to act as the antagonist or foil. I've watched Mayweather's fights for seventeen years and yet, I would never presume to know the man, no matter how detestable his antics are.

He has a great personality. I've met him and trained with him down at xtreme in Hialeah when he was still with Rubio. The problem is his english. Any body who's ever met him knows he's a an extremely funny arrogant yet humble guy. It's just well...that it's in spanish. If they allowed him to be himself in Spanish he would be on fire. Just imagine a Spanish speaking mayweather. Minus the talk of money and more of I will kick the shyt out of anybody
You're making my point actually, because he's nowhere near being a Spanish speaking Mayweather. Rigondeaux may be engaging on a one to one level (personally) but what I'm talking about is marketing a persona, not who he is actually. Mayweather markets a persona, the person we see talking sh1t and being flashy is a marketing invention and nothing more.
Rigondeaux comes off as very boring to me from a esthetic point of view.

This is true, of coarse I don't know Rigo, but I've noticed this from several interviews I've seen of him.
