Who do think wins in this fight?? I am talking about (Pre martinez Ko) Paul Williams vs. soon to be 37 yrs.old Floyd.
Do you think FMJ might out box him ala Carlos Quintana in his first fight with the Punisher??
Lara had some great counter punching success against (Post Martinez KO) Paul Williams.

Don't know about that. I saw him land from the outside as well (see: end of fourth, hurts Martinez with long left). He landed inside and out...and got hit plenty too.
The jab worked well. Paul won rounds with his jab.
Statistically in terms of his physique P Will should have been a ridiculous match up for everyone but he never took advantage of his physical gifts like he should. He wouldn't fight tall nor would he keep Mayweather at the end of his jab. He's not the quickest either. Mayweather would dance around him to a decision but it would be interesting to watch.
I just see Williams lurching around after Mayweather never getting set to let off any shots, while Floyd dances around landing on a guy that was very hittable and would not adjust to the same punch getting landed over and over. Martinez did it, Quintana did it and Floyd is a master at finding what works and maximising your exposure to that weakness.
Never saw it. He had success when he did his usual throwing a gazillion punches on the inside technique. He outworked Martinez in some exchanges. Sergio took the fight on short notice if we recall.
In fact, when he did try to punch from long range, he more often than not missed or fell short. Like I said, he can't deal with movement.

This idea that it's just the left hand that Williams got hit with is a myth. He got hit with every punch in the book. Cintron made him do the stanky leg with a straight right.
He didn't use his reach very well at all against Martinez. He outworked Martinez in some rounds with activity but mostly leaned into clean punches all night - both rights and lefts.
The bolded has nothing to do with what I wrote. In fact that whole paragraph but maybe that was meant for someone else?
And he didn't use his reach well enough against Martinez in the first fight, agreed. But he certainly had success when he did it. It was a pretty close fight.
He used his reach pretty well in the first fight against Martinez. Martinez is just a damn good fighter. And while Quintana is average at best, it was a left hand, well disguised and thrown from seemingly halfway across the ring that did him in.

Had it 8-4. Didn't think it was all that close. He used his reach for 1 round and then forgot about it again when he got beat twice by Martinez? Not for me. He caught Quintana cold in the rematch and Quintana is average at best and chinny.
Williams looked good against stationary fighters - Margarito, Winky Wright etc. It's no coincidence.

Pwill doesnt win a round and neither does margarito. I find it so funny that these guys were considered threats.
Shot ODLH and Cotto won 4-5 rounds against Mayweather, Guerrero won 3, why wouldn't P.WIll and Margarito win at least 1 round against Mayweather? lol.
I think Margarito and Williams would have likely given Mayweather his toughest fights at 147-154. Both guys had unbelievable stamina and workrate (throwing over 100 punches a round) and would have made Mayweather work every second of every round.
They would have certainly been the most physically demanding fights Floyd ever fought. Then again that's why neither fight was ever made.

He has a solid case for winning the first Martinez fight. It was very close either way.

Quintana rematch was 1 round :lol1:
He caught him cold. I take much more from the 12 round schooling he got in the first fight. He never used his reach because he wasn't smart enough or good enough to.
Maybe he adjusted?
And the first fight was fairly close. Clearly in the rematch he used his reach.

Most people forget it was a close fight, it did expose a lot of holes in his game though.
The reach is still a factor, even though Williams didn't use it enough, because it's still hard to get away from. When Paul was flinging those long arms around in his prime, it was not easy to deal with. Quintana beating him would matter a lot more if Paul hadn't beaten better fighters.
You really think Paul Williams is an easy win for Floyd?
Easy. One of his easier wins. Move and potshot. There's no secret. You move and Williams can't really do much. He's too flatfooted. He needs to be set to throw his flurries. He'd look like Guerrero.
People keep mentioning height and reach. Two things Williams never used :lol1:

Fair point but he used his reach very well, actually, he just didn't use it enough. Probably because he fancied himself a good in-fighter. But when he did use his reach (see: Quintana rematch) the results were very impressive.

P.Williams will lose for the simple fact that he won't use the tools he have properly to beat Floyd. He has the reach and work rate to give him hell but P.Williams rarely uses his reach. He is an inside fighter that likes to fight in the inside and slug it out that way. That is a really good thing for Floyd because this will allow him to work on the outside and move away before he gets into too much trouble. P.Williams doesn't know what to do with his reach because he rarely uses it. He was always too much of a slugger. He was an exciting fighter though. This is why I say a guy like Tommy Hearns would TKO/KO Mayweather because he has the exact tools to defeat Floyd and he knows how to use those tools properly.
Williams in his prime would have some things going for him that would give Floyd trouble. His height and reach, very high work rate, good power and southpaw stance would all bother Mayweather. Mayweather would figure him out and win a close but clear ud.
