Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer confirmed an earlier report by ******.com that a rib injury suffered by three-division titlewinner Abner Mares on Sunday has forced the postponement of his requested Feb. 15 rematch with Jhonny Gonzalez while also dismissing reports that their clash could happen on March 15.
Mares (26-1-1, 14 knockouts) suffered a shocking first-round knockout loss to Gonzalez (55-8, 47 KOs) that dethroned him as WBC featherweight titleholder in August, but was injured while training in Mexico City, according to his manager Frank Espinoza.
Schaefer said he was contacted on Monday by Mares, who had been examined by a doctor.
"I've been told today, after Abner Mares called me, that he suffered a rib injury in sparring this past week. At first, Abner was going to see if he could still go," Schaefer said of the Gonzalez-Mares rematch, which was to headline a Showtime-televised card at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
"But then, he went to see a doctor, and the doctor told him that he should not have any contact for a while. So he can not train for several weeks. Now, what we're going to do now is look at venues and dates and so on. But there is absolutely no date right now and it will certainly not go on March 15.That's definitely a no. So I don't know when it's going to happen. We'll see how Abner's recovery goes and then we'll take it from there."
Mares was THE RING's No. 5-rated pound-for-pound fighter entering the bout with Gonzalez but he was floored twice by the Mexican veteran during the first defense of the belt he won in his 126-pound debut, a ninth-round knockout of Daniel Ponce de Leon.
Ponce de Leon was the last man to defeat Gonzalez in an eighth-round technical decision in September of 2012, that ended Gonzalez's 12-fight winning streak which included 11 knockouts.
Mares was similarly injured in June of 2012, when rib damage led to his turning down a proposed clash with rising bantamweight Christian Esquival of Mexico that was intended for August of in Mares' native Guadalajara, Mexico, Mares' manager.
Mares was coming off a unanimous decision over former beltholder Eric Morel in April before his scheduled bout with Esquival was called off.

Watch out for the left hook again abner. Jhonny can punchhhh!
Mares is a good boxer, the dude got robbed in the Olympics man but he's not gonna keep boxing Johnny. Abner can't help himself but to trade.
I find it odd how many people consider Gonzales-Mares a "great" rematch or one they're looking forward to. Either you really like these guys or you dudes are just GB fanboys. I'm just sayin, Top Rank makes a rematch of a fight that went 10/12 competitive rounds and it's "pointless recycling." GB makes a rematch of a fight that ended in a first round KO and it's a great fight? Not that I mind it so much, I just find it kind of interesting :dunno:
In any case, if the idea is to push it to May 3rd, then go ahead and do that.
Very good post. I'd be surprised if this rematch goes past 5 to be honest.

I like rematches of all great matchups. I don't care if Martha Stewart put it together. If I can recognize the fighters, based on their styles will put on a great show, I'm watching it.
A good addition..... not close to making the card decent though
Maidana/Thurman would really grab my interests.... but it'll probably be Maidana/Broner II

Mayweather-Maidana
Broner vs Guerrero
Khan vs Porter
Mares-Gonzalez II
I would pay for this card, no doubt. That is a great card. Honestly though, if they could swing Khan against Ortiz and then do Porter-Thurman, in fantasy land. I'd pay $100 for this card.
Mayweather-Khan
Broner-Maidana II
Mares-Gonzalez II
That is a pretty damn good card. I'd buy.
Mayweather-Maidana
Broner vs Guerrero
Khan vs Porter
Mares-Gonzalez II
I just don't see how Mayweather's team, Golden Boy & Showtime could justify him fighting Amir Khan right now with all the negativity aimed at him. I say pair up Khan with someone like Robert Guerrero, so he can get his name back out but I'm sure he'll have to fight Danny Garcia again to prove a point.
If anything, Mayweather can add another Mexican fighter to the undercard while having one of his guys open up the card though I'd prefer Sakio Bika vs. Badou Jack.
Floyd Mayweather vs. Marcos Maidana
Jhonny Gonzalez vs. Abner Mares II
Leo Santa Cruz vs. Yoandris Salinas
Daniel Ponce de León vs. Mickey Bey
Mayweather is smart because of the huge fan base that boxing has in the Latino community, he would stack that card as much as he can. Anyways Happy New Year everyone, I'm off to the beach to celebrate. It's only 8:30pm here.
You wouldn't be able to tell from NSB but I was at both fights Floyd has alot Mexicans fan also. I think it Badou Jack turn on the undercard I see Bey getting the Sept undercard spot.

Nevermind, I found it! I didn't know Yoandris Salinas signed with Golden Boy, throw that boy to the wolves!
Mayweather vs. Maidana
Gonzalez vs. Mares II
Santa Cruz vs. Salinas
Bika vs. Jack
That's a PPV worthy card.
It would be a very fan friendly card not to many people could complain about.
I may not be Mexican but I love watching Santa Cruz & Mares crap I hope they are on the undercard huge fans of them. It makes sense Canelo won't be on them anymore so why bring the next best Mexican fighters on there.
I don't know where you got Leo Santa Cruz vs. Daniel Ponce De Leon from. Santa Cruz is at 122 and Ponce De Leon is at 130.
Substitute someone else as the opponent for Santa Cruz and I think you're spot on. The 2nd and 3rd fights are usually reserved for popular Mexicans (Abner Mares and Leo Santa Cruz), and the last PPV slot is always reserved for a T.M.T. fighter (Badou Jack).
And I think it'll be Khan, not Maidana.
