There's a lot of talk about cherry pickers and overprotected fighters. But the opposite problem occurs when a fighter is overmatched against veterans early in his career. Who were some of the most unprotected fighters in boxing?
I have noticed a lot of successful Olympians tend to be the guys who are protected...Probably because "Olympic gold/silver medalist" looks pretty sweet on the promotion bills etc so management teams want to build them up by moving them along slowly. This doesn't happen to all of them though, and not just Olympians either, look at Broner, fought a load of guys he looked good against but was thoroughly beaten in one of his major steps up. Hell even Tyson fought a lot of what people saw as soft touches at first...
I know this isn't always the case because a fighters career should be progressive, just seems to be that Olympians in particular are 'looked after' quite a bit
Darnell Boone I always said his potential is crazy didnt know he fought in all those weight classes though
He'll always be known as the guy who knocked down Andre Ward, stopped Adonis Stevenson and almost won a close decision over Kovalev.
Didn't even start boxing until he was 19 years old. 6-4 as an amateur, turned pro and fought veterans on short notice for quick money.
Imagine if he'd started fighting as a kid and had Nazim Richardson as a trainer.
David Reid for me. He was brought up quick and his career was over before 20 fights. Even Lacy to some extent. Going on the road to fight Calzaghe was way more than he was ready for. Not sure if his team overrated him or underestimated Calzaghe.
Lacy's team were stupid. Lacy is supposedly 5ft 10in and Calzaghe 5ft 11ins. I can't believe it for a second as Calzaghe towered over Lacy in their fight.
There is no way a fighter like that has success over an opponent so much taller than him. It was pathetic watching that fight.
Dereck 'del boy' Chisora.
Up until this year at least he was put in with everyone without a second thought. Fury, Helenius (when he was considered good), Vit. Klit, Haye and Malik Scott in around 20 fights. despite not proving he was ready for the next step he kept on getting moved forward.
Good to see they are taking a bit more care recently
josesito lopez should come to everyones mind when something like this is mentioned ... I'll root for that guy Vs anybody hes a bad azz fighter in my eyes
