He should have made it a street fight like Chino did instead he settled for a freaking fencing match with Mayweather. Canelo seriously needs a new team if he wants to improve because I don't think that team of his can teach him any more tricks. And the gameplan against mayweather was just the worst ever.
The dude had the strength, size and power advantage over mayweather and absolutely nullified it himself by trying to ****in outbox and outspeed floyd on the outside.
if he tried that, Canelo woulda gassed out by the 4th instead of the 6th :lol1:
I was about to post the exact same thing. He would have been so tired if he tried to do what Maidana did. Hell Maidana was tired back and forth doing it.
Yeah he lost clearly but at least he did everything he could to win. He had some good success. Canelo is bigger, stronger and more physical than Cotto. He was younger and fresher too with a better chin.
It's not that Canelo could have won but he could have made more of a fight of it. His tactics and performance were actually appalling.
Canelo's tactics were not appalling or wrong in my opinion. He fought the right fight. Throwing a bunch of combinations and trying to smother FMJ will not work and has not worked. He tried to box, pressure, bait to counter, and not throw a bunch of wasteful punches. That was the right game plan. Canelo had the power and hand speed to land and hurt FMJ with one or two solid punches. He could not land those punches. The credit goes to FMJ for that.
Why are people talking like Broner is in Floyds realm style or ability wise? None of that works vs Floyd because Floyd actually feints, throws, lands and dodges punches. Do you honestly think Floyd would ever land single digits in multiple rounds?
I swear some people don't understand boxing or what they are watching when they see Mayweather. If it's so easy why have all of these top fighters who have dedicated their lives to the sport not been able to do it? How come EVERYONES output drops against Floyd? Broner is a club fighter compared to Mayweather!!
Someone has a gif of Floyd v Canelo where he lands a jab then shifts to dodge Canelo's punch while punching over him and landing the right then going to touch the jab again before dodging Canelo's next punch...compare that to Broner walking backwards and getting KD without dodging or countering. Totally different class. Mayweather would embarrass Maidana it would be boring and people would say the same old about why Floyd shouldn't have fought him.
Broner doesn't know how to throw a damn counterpunch. Floyd would knock Maidana out. He has improved his defense slightly and used his jab more often but let's be real he's still a wide hooker and slow on his feet. Easy money for money.
And he still lost. Clearly.

Jump to 31:13, he tried to impose himself and got picked apart.
It was too late by then. A pressure fighter uses pressure every round. Its not enough to try it for only one round.
But floyd's reflexes are incredible. He reacts way faster than any of Canelo's punches expect his jab. Sees everything coming before any other fighter could.
Thats his genius. Or at least the thing that is so difficult to beat.
Also, people saying Canelo should of fought like Maidana....he doesnt. I dont believe he ever has. That isnt his style. He doesnt have the stamina to do it.
People were fooled into thinking Canelo is big and strong, so therefore he will use his size and strength, when in fact he doesnt really do that in fights. He boxes, and sets up attacks with his jab. He uses his speed to counter punch.
He isnt a brawler like Maidana.
Don't even know what this team effing Canelo was thinking when they were training Alvarez. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity that was wasted.
Pressure overwhelms Mayweather. That's the truth as seen in his fights, therefore all training should focus on achieving such one and only game plan, which entails perfect conditioning, hire Heredia secretly, anything... Pressure, pressure, pressure from the very first round to the last. There's no other way. (Cotto/Mayweather 2 will never happen because Mayweather knows he will lose in the rematch.)
But they'd rather ignore the truth. That's the disadvantage of being hyped heavily that these new guys believe in their own hype and invincibility. They think they can beat everybody.
Alvarez did try to pressure Floyd at times and it didn't work. When your missing and getting countered the punch output will drop. It's the same thing with people wondering why Cotto threw fewer left hooks against Mayweather but some people are still clueless why that happened.
Alvarez didn't spend the whole fight standing around doing nothing. He tried to corner Mayweather, go to the body, box, nothing worked.
I agree with you.
Besides, it's easy to speak after the fight, but what trainer would tell a 23 y.o. kid, about to fight the most important fight of his life, to forget everything he ever learned and just go there guns ablaze.
I though think that Canelo got discouraged pretty early, he didn't seem to be making changes to win the fight, it looked as if his change of approach was made out of frustration and desperation.
Maybe his corner can be blamed for not being able to give him the right suggestions at the right time, but I surely don't blame them for the game plan.
In any case, Canelo is not a pressure fighter, or an inside fighter, even in the last few rounds, when he had nothing to lose, he didn't insist on trying to get inside, that can only mean that he was not comfortable there.

absolutely agree. put maidana's mentality in canelo's body and floyd gets wrecked.
canelo had a horrible game plan trying to outbox floyd. he had size, weight, strength advantage yet he tried to pitty pat with floyd instead of going after him.
shoulder roll defense can be beat with a smart, all out aggressive attack that can be sustained a full twelve rounds.
Indeed. Every boxer should have everything possible in their stylistic arsenal. Whatever is required to win. At the minimum every boxer should have the ability to jump on their opponent and make it into a street fight if they need to. Particularly when they are at a disadvantage with a more skilled, more mobile, more ect. opponent. Foolishly going into a fight they know they can't win doing what they've always done is purely ridiculous.
What they had "always done" was working for them in previous fights. From what I could see they went in confident with no thoughts of losing. What happens in the ring is another story. Jumping in with a wreckless approach, leaving himself wide open would have been stupid and there is no indication or proof whatsoever that it would have worked for him.
I agree that it hasnt been his style, but i really think it should be. Or he should at least have it in his arsenal to become a brawler. He has such a good build for it, short, stocky, short arms, moves well at the waist, throws nice combinations etc and his chin isnt bad from what ive seen either (Cotto fight aside). He'd have to work double time on his stamina though, but he needs to do that anyway lol.
I agree with the TS personally. Canelo's advantages in this fight were his weight and power, and i feel he gave them up the moment he started boxing with Mayweather. He played a game of chess against the chess master when he should have smashed the board to the floor and bull rushed him.
Hatton tried it had a little success but was ultimately too small and not skilled enough. Ortiz tried it had more success but was getting picked off then sucker punched. Canelo could have done better than both of those imo, probably would have still lost but would have had a better chance than trying to box mayweather.

Exactly. A worn down cotto was pretty effective against mayweather imagine a younger fighter with that same kind of style doing it Floyd would for sure lose. People forgot that Floyd wanted to retire after the cotto fight cause of the punishment he took dont believe me watch the documentary they did on Floyd before he went to jail he said so himself. Floyd doesn't like that kind of fight.
So effective that he lost a one sided decision.
Worked well for Cotto; imagine if he had a one punch knockout power.

He didn't try to work his way in. At least not for damn near half the fight. Cotto worked his way in. This fool stood off like a moron and tried to box lol
And he still lost. Clearly.

Exactly. Seems like people expect Canelo to bumrush him and go Worldstar style. You have to work your way in close. And when he tried to work his way in, Floyd countered and/or used his feet to get out of the way.
I agree with both of these post..
And he would have been eating even more counter punches. It's not that simple. Unfortunately some people are too dumb to realize that.

He didn't do it early enough. He took about 6 rounds to try to get closer to him. By then, Floyd had already got into a rhythm and he'd already been discouraged. It was just a poor performance all around.
He should have been prepared to do that to get closer.
I'm not one of these people that thinks "Floyd struggles with pressure" because that's not necessarily true. For example, there's no way Amir Khan should try to pressure Floyd. But when you're a huge guy like Alvarez, that really is your best and only shot. Standing off and trying to box with him is just stupid for a man with Alvarez's physical attributes.
