Previously, HBO was the leader in "Big" Fights 2013 was SHO's Biggest year, what was or were the biggest factors contributing to this change?
And with much respect to HBO/Lampley, Mauro Ranallo brings that excitement to the broadcast.
Did anyone see the Golden Boy Fox Sports card this weekend? Stacked. The tide turned when GBP and HBO cut ties. Bad, bad move by the network.
No kidding. Maidana/Broner was an amazing fight and Thurman got a brutal KO
I thought both networks stepped it up this year, I don't think there is any clear winner. Showtime def won the ppv matchup with cannel vs Floyd, but I'm not really one of these fans who cares about ppv sales, so that doesn't effect me at all.
I thought most of GBP 3-4 fights a night events, were actually quite terrible. IMO they are to god damn long too, especially for us on the east coast.
Most of them are just an excuse to get al haymon fighters paid. Fights like zab vs paulie, trout vs Lara, these fights under no circumstances should of been made.
HBO on the other hand has way to many one sided fights as headliners.
Làmpleys got the voice but he's a hack and a hypocrite. Showtime has most of the young talent so their the future of boxing. Then again two to three years down the line who knows somebody like Danny Garcia could end up at TR. 4 years ago it looked like TR had all the talent and GBP was sh1t.
GBP has a great working relationship with Al Haymon. TR does not. And Haymon has a lot of these young fighters. They would never leave him and thus they would never jump to TR.

Golden Boy Promotions has been putting on better fights plain and simple. Top Rank puts together one sided fights and horrible under cards, and Golden Boy goes out and puts together fights that people actually want to watch with undercards that are better then Top Rank's main events.
Agree showtime is on par with hbo now. But no way in hell is the guy maro on par with jim lampley. Out of ure mind. Maybe if this was wwe and not boxing. Hope showtime replaces him soon.
I will just have to disagree with you on your first sentence. Shotime passed up HBO in 2012 in my opinion. Shotime introduced us to many up and coming fighters, gave us 3-4 fights on a card, and has backup fights if some fights ended early. HBO has been giving us too many 1 and 2 fight cards along with bias commentary. Last year, Shotime stepped up big time and I think they have just put out the better product over the past 2 years.
1) Mayweather obviously had a big part to do with it.
2) Golden Boy's presence keeps HBO from being the monopoly with the two biggest promotions (Top Rank & Golden Boy) which have the most prominent/money making fighters.
3) Consistently decent matchups/cards
Overall I think it comes down to being more of an even paying field now that HBO doesn't have both Top Rank AND Golden Boy. It's now HBO/Top Rank vs SHOWTIME/Golden Boy.
Try this, watch this fright with SKY announcing, you will see the difference a good announcer makes, on SKY Broadcast Ive counted 45 sec -1 full min with nothing being said.
Mauro Ranallo is TERRIBLE....cant stand his fake announcer voice and cliche phrases - like repeating we're in a title fight - right as if people who tune in to this dont already know who the champion is. Or screaming that the "crowd is going wild"....right as if we dont already hear that ish on TV. STFU, fake announcer voice guy.
Also he said the championship rounds begin in round 11....no buddy... they begin in round 10 since traditionally they began in round 13 when we had 15 rounders, hence last 3 rounds.
Stephen Espinoza deserves MAJORITY of the credit to be honest. Now to HBO Credit I thought they was able to push out a Solid Year despite losing Mayweather and GBP's to Showtime but it is Stephen Espinoza and the relationships that he already had in place the allowed him to come in and quickly help Showtime surpass HBO
He knows and has a relationship with Al Haymon so that made getting Mayweather to jump over fairly easy and once that happened everything else just kinda fell into place. HBO out of frustration that Mayweather left they kinda forced GBP over to Showtime.
But I am glad things worked out like it dude because Showtime has done a great job giving the fans Loaded Card and HBO had openings to feature some of the International Guys like GGG, Adonis Stevenson, Provadnikov and some of the others who lets be honest if GBP was still with HBO none of these guys would have been given TV Dates
So it is working out for the fans at least, HBO is currently trying to build new stars while Showtime is trying to sort who among all that talent with GBP, who exactly are the stars going into the next generation. Canelo and Broner both had setbacks in their career this year so that kinda leaves a opening for someone to step up and make claim going into next year
hbo needs to put on fights and get out of the promoting fighters business. How long is Martinez going take tune ups cause Dibella keeps feeding us excuses? How long do they have to build GGG up till they feed him to Martinez, is what im assuming they plan was from the start since Martinez needed an opponent to fulfill a contract they already give him and then they didn't know what to do with him i guess? Thats the kinda thing that got hbo in trouble, just make good fights forget about building fights that may never happen.
...they gotta seriously get a better interviewer at the end. Dunno who that dude was but him recommending Maidana to fight in Argentina because there are some great fights to be made there??? I was like, put the mic down and walk away.
Yeah, he's trying to kiss Argentinian asses in the crowd. He's not even talking to Maidana, he's talking to the interpreter. I thought replacing Jim Grey, the driest interviewer I've seen on tv, was good, but this replacement is equally dry. Why can't they hire someone like Joe Rogan of MMA.
I still like HBO a lot but I gotta admit. Last night felt like a PPV that Showtime put up. Even the segments prior to the Thurman fight or the Maidana-Broner fight. It had great production all the way until the end. Although, they gotta seriously get a better interviewer at the end. Dunno who that dude was but him recommending Maidana to fight in Argentina because there are some great fights to be made there??? I was like, put the mic down and walk away.
140 and 154 are actually poor divisions.
147 is a good division, but TR/HBO have #2 Bradley, #3 Marquez and #4 Pacquiao and #5 Brook is unaffiliated.
154 is poor? Floyd, Alvarez, Angulo, Trout, Cotto, Molina.
147 Guerrero, Kahn, Ortiz, Floyd, Maidana, Malignaggi, Porter, Josesito, Cano, Thurman and others.
140 Matthysse, Peterson, Garcia, Judah who could possibly be welterweights.
Umm, Floyd-Canelo sold over 2 million PPV's, broke the record gate number, and was great. They're doing fine, and they have the best roster in the best divisions, 140-154. They'll be just fine.

If Showtime only have one roster then of course they recycle fights lol
All Showtime have done is fail, lost 20m on Floyd gur and will lose much more money later on
They only have the sane fighters to choose from as everyone else fights for hbo

HBO is still the leader. Even after GBP taking all their fighters with them. Fighters whom HBO helped build up by approving crappy opponents for Broner, Berto, Canelo, Thurman, etc. SHO is reaping the rewards HBO has built.
