First Televised MMA match took place today and the Master Judo Gene Lebelle chocked the crap out of Milo Savage Middleweight ranked #5 in the world at the time. I suggest you do a little research, lad: Milo Savage hadn't been a ranked contender for close to a decade by the time of this bout. In fact, he'd been retired for over a two year period before briefly resuming his career in his late 30's. Taking four rounds to dispatch of a washed up journeyman (who just happens to be wearing a gi) while possessing a fairly significant size advantage is nothing worth gloating over. Certainly not like a nearly fifty year old Ray Mercer rendering top ten ranked heavyweight contender, Tim Sylvia, unconscious within ten seconds.

Milo was 39 years old... VS a 31 year old Gene... Milo was certainly out of prime. Mofo ranked 5 you say? He lost as much as he won ALMOST! His losses were at the same time as his MMA match... won 49 (KO 24) + lost 46 (KO 3) + drawn 10 = 105 rounds boxed 881 KO% 22.86 The guy was a Journeyman :lol1: At the tail end of his career aswell. Hadn't been ranked at all in about 10 years and even when he was ranked it was a seldom occurance possibly even the only time he was ever ranked at all if I recall correctly.

On which Planet was Milo Savage ranked #5 at Middleweight in 1963? Completely and utterly false. The only time Milo Savage was ever in the Top 10 at Middleweight was in the mid 50's. Sad that people have to lie about rankings to boost something that's really not impressive at all.

Gene is indeed quite the specimen. understand also that while Gene was a tremendous Judoka he also was a decent wrestler according to Karl Gotch....a man who was probably even more of a G than LeBell! Having said that one cannot look at these matches seriously. At the time there was no precedent for a match of this sort. Let me just share some knowledge for what it is worth...and it comes from about 37 years experience as a martial artist. You excell at what you train for. In any hybrid match the match will favor the person to whom the fight conditions favor in terms of training and preperation. A ring always gives a grappler a slight advantage and here is why: In a street scenerio many people will naturally sprawl when grabbed. Space is usually not an issue, which is why street fights seem to spread out as people engage. In a ring you run out of real estate real quick when you sprawl unless you know how to set it up. So first advantage goes to the grappler who can simply run in, cover and grab the legs when the person is against the edge of the ring. So it is never a question about who is better, the real hypothetical is, do conditions favor training more conducive to a grapple or a boxing scenerio. One proof of this is what has happened in MMA: suprise suprise, you have to be well rounded to fight effectively. In the end the best training scenerio, the best style is simple uncomplicated striking systems (Muy Thai, Boxing, wrestling, Judo, Jiu Jitsu) for the ring.

Savage had one on too only it was covered in Vaseline and he didn't let Gene punch or kick LOL if anyone was a cheating fruit it was Savage! That's the first I heard it was "covered in Vaseline".. And the fact that both were wearing Gi's swings it in Gene's favour as he was a judo practitioner, the Gi's are used to grab hold of which allows easy throws and joint submissions!

Why are you impressed by a boxer losing in a completely different sport? Because for one the boxers and their promoters were the ones talking crap and savage was brought in as a ringr so everything was corrupt on the boxers side as usual. I like that he mad them all eat crow!!!

Regarding the video, very interesting stuff. I didn't know about this. I would like to see a similar match in this era, the combination of both inside the same ring makes for an intriguing and entertaining match IMO.
