Did Howard Foster (the incompetent referee for Froch vs Groves) harm Froch or Groves more severely? Froch was arguably on the verge of stopping Groves in conclusive fashion when the referee jumped in - did it give Groves the opportunity to dispute the loss? I thought it was a very bad stoppage because Groves was still throwing back. Extremely poor stoppage, but as much as Groves feels slighted by the ref, I'm wondering if the ref actually might have robbed Froch of a memorable finish and a indisputable KO?
As a result of the stoppage, Groves has been elevated and has assumed the "martyr" position - in other words, he's the one who can justifiably complain about the fight being stopped prematurely. Froch on the other hand is in a position where he has to defend himself from criticism about being behind on the scorecards against Groves when the ref jumped in prematurely.
Who did the ref harm the most?
Obviously Froch, who was on the verge of knocking George Groves spark out. Now he's having to deal with idiots throwing all sorts of shit at him.
Groves has come out of it pretty well despite the defeat, with his health intact and a swell of support from bandwagon jumpers. His performance will get him another title shot soon enough.
I think Froch was on his way to a stoppage win regardless, every round he was getting stronger......and he had a lot of time left in the 9th round. That said, the stoppage looked a bit early. A decent stoppage would have given Froch another classic come from behind victory!
Groves has elevated himself by his performance though. He will get another world title shot with this effort.
My worry is that if a rematch is made, Froch will have to walk through a scary amount of heavy punishment again for six rounds or so.....at his age and with his wealth, gorgeous girlfriend and baby Rocco he really needs to consider his long term health. Having a great chin does not mean you won't suffer brain damage.
I think its time for him to call it a day as a true British legend and let Groves and Degale fight for the vacant titles.
I think he harmed both.
I've seen Groves hurt before and come back, but Foster robbed him of that chance. One could also argue that he robbed froch of the chance at a clean and conclusive knock out. Seemed like the fight was turning his way and Groves's best rounds were behind him. Had the ref not stopped it early froch may well have gotten the clean stoppage a few seconds later or at least have come on stronger and stronger in the last few rounds and perhaps taken him out later. Conversely Groves may have shown true grit, gotten through the rough patch and gone on to win. Foster basically ruined the fight and left nothing but question marks at the end of it rather than a clear decisive winner.
Its benefited Groves, for sure. If the ref hadn't jumped in, Froch would have got a legitimate stoppage and Groves would fall down the pecking-order for another world title shot. As it is, he's going to get another shot immediately against Froch or Stieglitz.
The ref did George a favour.
Let's look at the facts:
A) Froch is still a world champion
B) Groves is not a world champ
C) B!!!
Hence, of course Groves. Froch got boo'd a little. both him and the fans will get over that quickly.

Who did the ref harm the most?
Good post!
Based on what we saw: the ref harmed Groves the most. On another hand, Froch emerged harmed as well -- as it will be difficult for him to fight in the UK again (outside Nottingham...)
This isn't even a question worth asking, everyone was hurt by it. Froch got a lot of criticism that was unwarranted and he looked to be on his way to getting a legitimate stoppage, looked. Groves because he wasn't given a chance to recover, that definitely ranks high as one of the most premature stoppage in boxing.
The ref has harmed Froch more than Groves, because somehow this little prick GG has a bandwagon of arselickers and a warrior that deserves nothing but respect like Froch is now somehow the bad guy (done nothing wrong but show amazing heart, determination and grit) because of a slightly premature stoppage by the ref
After round 6, there was only gonna be one winner and it wasn't gonna be Groves, Froch came through that and was looking strong, looking like he'd be relentless to the end (as usual), Groves was looking fatigued with each passing round, so in a way Groves has saved face by not being handed his first defeat as emphatically as it would most likely have been and can play the easy "i wasn't hurt" "i'd have comeback" card and people lap it up like clapping seals
