On 15 November,2003..the rise of Manny Pacquaio began with an impressive knock out win over undisputed featherweight champ and P4P ruler Marco Antonio Barrera..who had been on an 11 fight winning run..beating the likes of Morales,Tapia and Hamed.
1.Where do you rank this fight among Pacquaio's best wins?
2.What was the reason behind this one sided ferocious beatdown?
3.How did Pacquiao beat prime barrera but lose to a shot morales?
4.What upset in the current boxing world could match the upset result of this fight...GGG moving up dominating then koing Ward?
I watched the segement..Barrera had the metal plates inserted 16 fights before the Pacquaio one..so that's no excuse..and Barrera never used it as an excuse after the fight
At the time of the fight Barrera was the one of top 3 pound for pound fighters on the planet..and in the best run of his career.
Before the fight..Barrera was quoted "He reminds me of a young me,he has a fire in him..which I don't think I'll be able to put out"
Im not saying that cost him the fight, im saying he had no intensity that night against pacquiao. The rematch was a easy win for pacquiao but barrera was more engaging that night, compared to the first fight
I'll admit, I was blind sided by what Manny did at 140-147.
When I first heard of the DLH fight, I was thinking it was more of a circus act. First gut reaction. But after thinking about it, watching the Forbes fight a few times, Forbes of all people putting a dent in DLH, then the zombie DLH that showed up at the weigh in....
Hindsight is 20/20.
i thought 135 was a mistake :lol1:
then he beats Diaz and i was like 'ok, just stay there'
then DLH wanted a WW fight...Oscar fvcked that division up
Oscar is the devil. Without him, Mayweather stays at 140 and never becomes Money, Pacquiao eventually moves up, and they fight in 2008 or 2009 and put on a classic.
see i remember the exact opposite,,, I remember their being a big deal about the weight, and manny was going to high and his power and speed wouldnt be the same,, and their was also alot of talk about the gloves used in manny-morales....
i do remember when he fought diaz,, and yes fight night he was pretty big, and the whole 130 discusion seemed silly in retrospect
People who don't think the weight was considered a big deal only need to look up the HBO broadcast on YouTube or wherever.
Yeah, I don't think a lot were following boxing (on here anyways) but back in the early 2000s Manny was a HUGE 130 lb'er. Even bigger than Morales when he moved up to fight those guys.
I remember he and Diaz were both welterweights on fight night and I was like WTF is going on lol

If you could go back to PAC 130 days and say he's going to one day move up and terrorize the welterweight beating guys like Hoya, Hatton, Cotto, Margarito, Clottey, and even scaring Mayweather, peps would say you're a retard. Not a chance at all :lol1:.

exactly,,, I remember when he was going to fight morales and people thought that 130 would be too big for him, and that manny would get ko'd in higher weights,,
said the same thing about the diaz fight at 135,,,
But now they all ***** about cotto's 145 CW and margs wasnt even a CW,, it was 2 welters going to 150 for some crappy vacant belt
huge props to manny for going up in weight

Was bad Chad lineal when Adonis wrecked him?
oh, damn,,,, your right,, i totally forgot about that,, so yes it probably happens about once a decade,,,
spinks-tyson in 88
90s not sure
00s MB vs manny
2013 dawson-adonis
Good call my friend, cant believe i forgot that one
1b hatton
1c jmm 2
I think the hatton win was terrific because manny is the only guy ever to beat hatton at 140 for the lineal title,, plus he just destroyed hatton in brutal fashion,, i cant recall a lineal champ losing his title in such fashion
Was bad Chad lineal when Adonis wrecked him?
barrera went on to have some good wins after this fight, so it wasnt like he was at the end of his career,,, solid wins over pedan, juarez, morales 3, and i thought he should have beaten jmm if the ref had ruled the knockdown correctly
Spinks wasn't a true HW. And no one even gave Spinks a chance at the time.
So now you're changing the criteria :dunno:
Hatton was the underdog too, and Spinks was a legit heavyweight.
Was Spinks lineal champ? Yes.
Was he stopped in a round? Yes.
yes that is about the only one,, but spinks was a semi-retired fight, and it was 25 years ago....
hatton was active, and manny crushed him,,, you dont see that very often,,
Just saying, it's been done before.
Where was MAB in the P4P rankings when this went down?
MAB was on an 11 fight streak and in a lot of wars at this point. It wasn't really a surprise that it ended.
Also, MAB had lost 3 times by this point. Fairly recently. Not at the beginning of his career either. Twice to Junior Jones. Once by KTFO.
My personal sentiment: Overblown achievement. Decent enough win but overblown to Chavez/Taylor levels. The fanboys make it seem like Pac beat Chavez. He beat Barrera, the one who was already KTFO and owned by Jones and lost to Morales.
When Barrera beat Hamed he was highly rated and peaking as a fighter. The win for Pacquiao was significant even though I felt Pacquiao was a bad style match up and underrated at that point. He was way too good for people to overlook him in that fight.
I just read every post and nobody mentioned, barrera being medically check out leading into the pacquiao fight. Mentally he wasnt in it that night. There was a queation mark about a plate in barrera's head. He was having problems in his camp. hbo did a segment on it right before the fight started. Thats why it was so one sided
you mean that plate that he had put in in 1997? yea...he was doing fine with it for 6 years but when he got his ass kicked by PAC, it was the reason

Yeah, that's called a convenient excuse. Barrera got his ass kicked because he was fighting an opponent who could constantly beat him to the punch.

I picked Pacquiao to win because I knew what he could do and had seen him fight. I wasn't unfamiliar with him. I knew his speed and power would be too much. If Junior Jones could stop Barrera I saw no reason a superior and more complete fighter couldn't.
Also, the southpaw stance was definitely going to be a problem. To me, this was not a big upset but a great performance from Pacquiao.
