But sometimes you just know.
When JCC quit against De La Hoya, he said " I just didnt feel right, I felt death"
These guys, risk their lives for our entertainment yet we seem to think we have the right to question thier courage from our couches.
Now i'ved played Aussie rules.
What have you done to earn your stripes?
Yeah, but youre asking an athlete to make a medical decision on their life arent you ?
Nicky Lauda quit.
He was world champion 6 years later and owned 2 airlines.
JCC v De La Hoya 2
JCC told his corner "it just feels wrong, I feel death in the air"
I just dont see how any of you here can judge anyones courage when you havent even sen never mind, played the worlds most courageous game ??
Yeah well a big step in the right direction would be if fighters stopped seeking out old, over matched opponents
No one! I repeat, No one has the right to judge a fighters call if he and or his corner feels that man's life is in danger!
a lot of critics talk greasy but fact of the matter is these opinionated adolescents could never walk a day in the life of a fighter!
For those who assume boxing is a cake walk, i encourage you to lace up and try the sport for yourself. see how you like getting your head snapped back or your body pounded. then probably you'll think twice before bumping your gums again.
Fighters have the right to quit whenever they want for whatever reasons they choose. Fight fans have the right to think poorly of them for quiting. The fact that 99% of the fight fans could not and would not endure what pro fighters endure is meaningless. Nobody with common sense expects fight fans to be any where near as tough and courageous as pro fighters. They are judged by completely different standards. Pro fighters are vastly tougher and more courageous than the average fight fan and that's part of the reason they chose to fight for a living and are payed sometimes millions of dollars to do so. Nobody expects car racing fans to drive as skillfully as the men driving the cars on the track. Nobody expects tennis fans to play tennis like the pros they are fans of. It's unreasonable to expect most fight fans to have the same courage as pro fighters. As for this game you play in Australia being the most dangerous sport in the world and requiring the most courage to play of any sport in the world I have only your word on that and I know nothing about this game. I was a boxer in the army and that's not the same as being a pro boxer. It did give me knowledge of what it's like to hit and get hit with boxing gloves on for a few 3 minute rounds.

I agree with you... Most people here that say this & that Quit are more or less mexican/latin american boxing fans... they have this machismo Ego & think that boxers should die in the ring for their entertainment... bet if most keyboard warrios here step on one, they'd quit if put on a life threatening situation.
He was Puerto Rican, I think he had a fractured wrist. He carried on for a bit but clearly didn't feel right fighting one-handed.
Burns on the other hand continued v Beltran and may now have suffered permanent nerve damage.
I think boxing fans need to drop the whole 'quitter' thing, lives are on the line.
The only thing that Chelo had fractured was his heart. X-rays were negative.
Can anyone see in a couple of decades if boxing is still around fighters being allowed to carry on with grotesque swelling or broken jaws? I think it's not long off before judges will be implored to stop fights if they suspect or notice injuries requiring medical attention
because once you quit ppl will forever tag you as the guy that can't overcome adversity.
look at ortiz he had a chance to beat maidana he was in that fight knocked him down just like he got knocked down quitting in that fight and his comments afterwards were shameful.
him deciding to quit against lopez was different and i have no problem with that but quiting against maidana was shameful.
Yes indeed, completely agree with you about Ortiz. The manner he quit in those were night and day.

Absolutely!!
Sometimes you have a off day. Sometimes it just doesnt feel right.
I know all you guys on here and you're real fans, you're not about bloodlust.
All fighters have courage, much more than you or I.
Lets not pressure them, let them quit!!!
No fighter takes it lightly but its thier life/brain not yours.
It's the job of the fighter to fight, it's the job of the commission, referee and trainer to protect the fighter. What we need to have is more corner men being more responsible and stopping fights.
Robert Garcia should have stopped the Marg vs Pac fight, the Russian that's in a comma, his trainers should have done the same thing.
A fighter should fight though until the end because that's the sport. It's brutal and it's a battle of attrition.
because once you quit ppl will forever tag you as the guy that can't overcome adversity.

Not really, look at tennis. Novac wasa known quitter but 3 Aus opens later no one cared.
World no1 and all round hero.
Yet he quit because it was a bit too hot.
The 2 mainb sports we play here are Aussie rules and cricket and quitting and more importantly being a wuss isnt excepted at any stage at any level, but ots rarely if ever actually a life or death situation.
Just seems strange that you can wear pads playing football and be scared of a baseball yet youre expected to die in the ring.
Its because we cling on to the past.
Ask Ali and Fraizer what its like when its too hot, they can tell you. Whoever Novac is (sorry I don't know who he is) was playing tennis.
Ali and Fraizer were heavyweight men fighting in the Philippines.
boxing is one of the only sports where getting injured / being unable to continue means you lose.
it's looked down upon becuase of the value of continueing that is exclusive to this sport.
i don't have issues with somebody quitting to save his health, but in boxing you surrender to defeat.
there are plenty of things more important than finishing a boxing match, like being able to walk and talk.

One of the biggest problems with the fans, but we can't help it.
Its a combat sport for a reason, does anyone know how often if its ever happened if UFC fighters have gone thru broken jaws etc?
Although I do agree, as fans watching we have no room to judge.. its just our egos coming out depending if we either like/dislike that fighter.

But When that Cuban fought Rickey burns a fight ago he just gave up. Didn't want to try to win.

It's a tough one because there's different ways you can quit.
Alvarado against provodnikov, no shame in that.

I think that's unfair on the spectators who part with there money to see competition in sport.
Overall I guess there's quitting because you can't win, and quitting because you don't want to win and it's important to chastise one but not the other.
