There's a puerto rican boxing page on fb that is saying cotto vs martinez have agreed to the weight and possibly location only money is left. They are saying 157 is the agreed weight
That still has absolutely nothing to do with boxing IQ. The fact that he dominated the fight before he made that particular decision is a better example of his boxing IQ than getting hurt in the 12th.
Hell didn't Margarito stalk Cotto around the ring before brutally stopping Cotto. Where was his ring IQ then??
It has alot to do with boxing IQ. Boxing IQ= being smart in the ring. To pressure and go toe to toe after winning 11 rounds is not smart boxing. Chavez wasnt even hurt bad enough to continue pressure to finish him off. What was the result of Martinez's stupidity? He needs to thank the boxing gods that he was finished off. You dont put yourself in position like that, ever.
Cotto was on the decline in the fight and getting beat up and in that spot yes you go for the finish. Your not going to be an idiot and play it safe IF your opponent is clearly beatin up and close to being KO'd.
I do not know who you were referring to however, you're crazy to even compare Cotto to Chavez. Cotto doesn't have Chavez's chin, power, stamina or size.
This.
Not only that but when Sergio is forced to fight it usually has the opposite effect as intended by the opposition as Martinez pretty much starts putting a hurt on everyone.
Martinez has a higher IQ imo. He has to in order to have gotten through the middleweight division. When that doesn't work he goes into full on attack mode and Sergio is a natural killer. Its in his mind, you only have to see what happens when he gets hurt or they bring the fight out of him.
Stylistically Martinez seems like worst case scenario for Cotto. Bigger, faster, stronger, more skilled, not to mention Sergio's will...AND he's a soutpaw. Cotto does has one BIG thing going for him and that's Sergio's current/past state and age. Like someone said, Sergio cant fully train or use his legs fully last we heard and dude has a ton of wear on him by these big guys. Now... If his surgery and recovery went well and he is relatively healthy he should beat on Cotto pretty badly come later round (If Cotto doesnt get shocked early as Martinez does have that kind of power and Cotto isnt exactly walking around with granite)..
Whoever is saying Martinez showed no IQ in the 12th must not follow this sport as much as they think. It was thought it'd be damn near impossible for Martinez to win a decision seeing as he was fighting Jr through Arum.
Actually thats low boxing IQ. Sure thats considered heart and will to end the fight with a "bang" but if that fight is already in your favor and you were dominating it, to put yourself in a situation that could very well cost you it, is just plain stupidity. You could still box and pick your shots but dont be an idiot and go toe toe and risk getting caught when you have clearly won 11 rounds.

Where in my post did I compare Cotto to JCC Jr regarding his attributes other THAN ring IQ and generalship?
P4P Cotto COMPLETELY AND UNANIMOUSLY destroys JCC Jr. Any how, that is NOT the topic here, I used the example of Chavez chasing Martinez all around the ring very ineffectively for 11.5 rounds and only was able to land on Sergio when he decided (to be argued) to stand his ground on the 12th.
Now while I agree in the mythical pfp scale Cotto has most advantages over Chavez, in reality, he gets clobbered. For the previously stated reasons. It's 1 thing to stalk smaller men, without the power to ko middleweights. It's another entirely to stalk a bigger man, with more power and stamina. Suicidal even.
That's called ending the show with a bang.
Certain people are wired that way. Guys like ODLHYA/Floyd aren't.
Were not talking about heart or will, were talking about being smart in the ring.
That cannot be the extent of your examples. There are plenty of fighters that went toe to toe after dominating for 11 rounds. One of the sports greatest examples of that is Morrales/Pacman 1. It's called a fighter's mentality. Not low ring IQ.

All good key points and what not but on the other hand, what makes you think that Miguel will not show up in his BEST shape ever?
Also, Cotto will take away Maravilla's reach advantage by closing the distance where Miguel's shorter arms will have more leverage -Left Hook-. Also, Ill have to agree that Cotto's ring IQ is superior than that's of Sergio.
Something else to consider is that Cotto is one of the best at cutting off the ring and he will not chase him just like JC Jr. did to Martinez.
I think that we have a great match up, and should be memorable! Ill do my 100% to attend this fight!
Dont be surprised when Cotto stops Sergio!!!
War Cotto!!!!

If Martinez was a big full fledged MW like his opponents, I'd agree with you. He clearly isn't. He might be bigger than Cotto, but at 157 I don't think it's going to be that big. Martinez doesn't use his physicality often anyway.
No, my point was Martinez struggled with big, full fledged, fresh middleweights. You cannot compare an average sized welterweight to those dudes. I'd wager all pose bigger threats than an average sized welterweight weight would to Martinez.
What I'm worried about the catchweight is that Martinez apparently hasn't been able to do much traditional road work for the past 2 fights. For Murray, he had to do his cardio in the pool because it's low impact on the knees. It's going to be harder to lose weight.
Yeah, however I don't consider it common sense to compare big, full fledged ,fresh, middleweights to an average welterweight, small jr middleweight and tiny, virgin middleweight.

Martinez doesnt have good boxing IQ. He displayed that in the 12th round vs Chavez jr when he tried to put the pressure on and go toe toe when he clearly won every round leading up to.

I'm not sure Martinez does either anymore. Certainly not to the degree he did even a year ago.

Cotto may or may not have a higher boxing iq. But he doesn't have it physically to enforce them in this particular matchup.

You could bet all your points and it wouldn't hurt me too much. Cotto is going to be the MW king. I'm not running. Martinez is going to see what it's like to fight someone with a higher boxing IQ then himself.

Uh huh. I really like Cotto, however I know he cannot beat Martinez. Don't run.

When it's announced and official, I'll remember Bush. You got yourself a bet.
