I was pretty disappointed when I heard of this match being made altogether...Stevens is not even close to GGG's level. I'll watch it but can't get excited about it..
I find it hilarious how everyone was calling for a Stevens-GGG fight after Stevens KO'd Ayala..
As soon as it was made, those same people boycotted it haha.
I think this is a good stay-busy fight. This is essentially GGG's 5th fight in a year. He doesn't need to fight world-beaters each and every outing.
Showcase fight for GGG vs a thuggish hometown tough guy with pop. But let's keep it 100. Stevens is a classic gatekeeper. His 2 step up fights vs Dirrell and Brinkley were not competitive. He's a fringe contender at best, no way is this a step up for GGG. All Curtis has is a puncher's chance, and that's about it.
Yep however Stevens is more dangerous than some better guys (including Macklin and Mora) just on account of his punching power. Those other guys might be favored vs Stevens, but don't even have a punchers chance. At best someone like Mora would make GGG look bad in winning.
I think it's a test to see how well GGG chin can hold up. Either way though fans will keep saying GGG is not for real until he gets a win over Martinez.
Do you mean black guys or specifically African-American, cos I got 8 or 9 black guys, (mainly Africans), but of those only a couple were North Americans also (Gardner and Greenidge).
Remember most of Golovkins career has been in Europe, and put simply, there just ain't as many African- Americans in Europe as there are in America.
Make sense?
I see where you're coming from but I just wonder if Bernard Hopkins has some inside information on if GGG's record is purposely tailored a bit. I very well could be wrong though so time will tell.
Most of GGG's record consists of mediocre opposition; few fighters of Stevens profile ~ an experienced slugger in his physical prime with every ounce of middleweight power.
I watched his whole career on a youtube montage; asians, latinos and caucasians but very few Afro-Americans on it. Wonder if Bernard Hopkins was on to something?

And yet they didn't hesitate to make this fight at all other than the fact that Stevens isn't even worthy.

Aaand here we go...
This is going to be a mismatch. Stevens has never faced a fighter the caliber of Golovkin, whereas GGG has dealt with heavy punchers numerous times throughout his career. Basically, I don't see anything in Stevens arsenal that Golovkin hasn't already seen before. This combined with GGG's ring generalship = mismatch.

One sided mismatch. He will be able to test GGG's chin but wont be able to land enough to really be a threat to him unless GGG has a suspect chin and drops with one shot which I doubt

One sided mismatch. Stevens is an opponent that will make GGG look like a beast and build up his reputation as the killer at 160 and most feared man in boxing.
This is a showcase fight.
I would've liked to see him destroy the Latin Trousersnake-fondler, but that would be about as much of a wasted fight as Stevens. I mean while we're at it, have him fight Manfredo as well.
Hard to say if they would have approved Mora. The noise at the time was it would likely be one of the two, but Stevens was the preferred option - Stevens' KO1s had generated a buzz and he was being more vocal about wanting the fight, not to mention being a Brooklyn guy for an MSG gig.
Would tend to agree that Mora would be the trickier fight (and they'd also have a recent common win over Proksa) though I'd still expect a Golovkin stoppage in the end, but from the business perspective undoubtedly GGG - Stevens is the easier sell.
Good points.
Lampley was on the "no one wants to fight him" stuff and Mora straight called him out. HBO is givng him the push and they need GGG to look good. HBO didn't approve Mora IMO because it would be an ugly TV fight that GGG would win but not necessarily get a KO.
Now the stevens fight should produce a KO/TKO either way-with GGG the 90-95% favorite to get the KO. STvens also is from Brownsville, which should provide a sellout and a "TV dramatic contrast" ringside atmosphere-if you get what I am saying. I agree that coming off the KO stevens looks far more dangerous.
STevens was the better business move by far
I think the key to answering this question is the HBO execs. They approved this fight and provided enough dough to give stevens a lil more money. They wouldn't approve Mora.
I think they see this as a one sided GGG destruction and I agree.

Can Curtis "Showtime" Stevens really test GGG or it's just another one sided beating by GGG?
What's your opinion?

Stevens is not ranked in the top fifteen by the WBC, WBA or IBF. That should be a good indication.
organization rankings are b.s. Wilder is wbc #3 and he beat nobody.
But this is a one sided mismatch. Golovkin tears him up, only thing Stevens has is a left hook
