well we will soon see, but i cant see anything other than a broner win. i like maidana, he comes to fight and put on a show. but with all due respect, broner is leagues above lopez and karass.
Based on what? Remember, we are talking about 147 here. Karass just beat a shopworn Berto, and Lopez humbled Ortiz, and then got robbed on the scales by Canelo. Until Ortiz and Berto were beaten by those guys, they were considered top 147 lbers. Of course, revisionists are fond of coming along and saying Berto and Ortiz aren't good wins anymore, not because they got beat, but because WHO beat them doesn't fit into their version of boxing utopia.
Karass and Lopez are underrated wins for Maidana, as time will tell, and I simply can't see Broner beating them the way Maidana already has. And respect given when its given, but Karass with his workrate, height, and chin could beat Broner maybe. Malignaggi was knocked down by Cano a fight prior, and then Broner couldn't even dent him, so we know Karass would be in there the whole fight throwing punches against Broner. And the shoulder roll isn't so effective against taller fighters.
A. thats the thing though, duran sure as hell could brawl but he could box really well too. those abilities is what allowed him to drag good techicians into his kind of fight. the footwork, sense of distance, understanding of angles, jab, anticipation, timing, form and precision etc.
B. thats what allowed him to get in his opponents face where he could then brawl his way to the mountain top. but without those skills ppl would easily have used his aggression against him instead of falling victims to it. maidana lacks those skills, thats why fighters like khan and kotelnik were alble to neutralize him for most of the fight and alexander for the entire fight. duran wouldnt allow that though.
C. ppl go on about the clinching in the devon fight, but duran wouldnt allow that, he knew how to free his hands and was a master inside unlike maidana who throws his punches too wide to be effective up close and has no clue were to place his feet and head. if you put the jab on duran he could slip and counter, or he could outjab you, maidana does neither particularly well. if you give duran angles he will not only cut you off and corner you, but use his understanding of angles to walk you into shots, while madiana fights in straight lines all the time.
D. i could keep going but i think i made my point. its not just a question of quality its a question of versatility. something duran had but maidana doesnt, along with skills and intelligence. durans style was crafted to meticulous perfection as you called it, maidana style however isnt perfected in the least. its just developing, until he got with garcia he was fighting off pure heart and talent.
E. provodnikovs success just proves my point, sure he could do that against a fellow brawler in alvarado. and he could do it with bradley when he decided to fight that kind of fight, but when bradley boxed he neutralized ruslan almost entirely. i like ruslan, he has better skills than maidana and it will take a really good fighter (like bradley) to neutralize him. it wont take as good a fighter to neutralize maidana.
F. maidanas heart is overrated, he has lots of pride for sure and wont lay down for anyone. but i saw an amir khan that was ready to be taken out and a gassed maidana who to me had enough left in the tank to get him out of there but couldnt dig deep enough. lots of fighters refuse to be stopped but only a few refuse to lose, imo maidana doesnt fit in that category.
G. S&C coaches are beneficial but skills pay the bills at the end of the day. if garcia got maidana at a young age he would probably be a great fighter but he didnt. he can only teach him so much in the limited time they had at a quite advanced age and i dont think its enough.
H. i agree with broner being too muscled up and not carrying his power. but he did carry his speed and he has so much more skill than maidana. when you can walk your opponent into accurate punches he doesnt see you dont need a tremendous amount of power to **** him up. just like even if you have all the power in the world you still cant hurt what you cant hit. lopez and karass are brawlers and tailor made for maidana, they are gonna fight maidanas fight and either sink or swim which plays into his hands. against broner maidana will have to make him fight his fight which imo he is incapable of doing.
A. People act as if Duran was an elite boxer that developed brawling skills. A truer statement would be he was an elite brawler who developed boxing skills. And, as I said, I was not implying Maidana is as skilled as Duran was, but the comparison holds, because Duran was a brawler that took it to the next level, and Maidana is trying to do that. Maidana is a rare type of brawler that has the tools and mentality to up his game. Most brawlers are stuck on one level of progression, and that is where the stigma against brawlers comes from, I suppose.
B. As I said, Maidana is not as good as Duran was at this point, no one is saying that, but the boxing he has added to his game, namely his jab and added waist movement and straighter shots would have earned him victories over both Khan and Kotelnik. Kotelnik was razor close anyway, but add in Maidana's improvements? He wins going away.
C. yes, Duran was great. But like I said I wasn't saying Maidana is as skillful as Duran was. I'm saying duran is an example of a brawler that took it to the next level. Maidana has learned some head movement, he used it in the Karass fight. Not so much slipping and countering over the jab, but he now has: a shotgun jab, better boxing ability, and better head movement. Plus I think its uncharitable to say he doesn't know how to place his feet in his last couple of fights. Power comes through the root, the feet and stance. Maidana knows how to draw power through his root, and launch his whole body into a punch, with a good usage of torque, and he positioned himself adequately to get Lopez, who was attempting to box a bit, and Karass, who was taller and backpedaling, out of there. Additionally, its true Maidana doesn't do much in the way of angles, but he won't have to against Broner. He just has to dig to the body, which will be open, and sieze what opportunities that body work opens up. Also, I won't be surprised if Maidana has fleeter feet than Broner, who has fallen in love with stationary fighting and fighting at his own pace.
D.. Yes, I agree. Maidana is a work in progress. What's special about him is he is able to learn at this stage of his career. He is a rare student that can empty his cup and absorb new teachings. I have to respect that. There is so much to work with with that guy. Heart, chin, power, and the ability to LEARN. A teacher's dream.
E.. Ruslan gassed against Bradley in the middle rounds. I don't buy that Bradley could have just boxed him. I think Ruslan MADE him fight his fight in those rounds. Ruslan can cut off the ring well and really wear a guy down. Ruslan's stamina was superior in the Alvarado fight from the Bradley fight. Its my opinion Ruslan with the same stamina as the Alvarado fight beats Bradley. As to Ruslan being more skilled, I'm not agreeing with that. He cuts off the ring better, but Maidana is really developing into a ranged bomber with that jab. Rewatch the end of the Karass fight. They are both good, and I am a fan of both. I like ruslans ability to cut off the ring better than Maidana's, but I like Maidana's jab and power more than Ruslan's.
F. this I just can't agree with. Maidana's heart cannot be questioned. As limited as he was in the Khan and Devon fights, many fighters would have been either: knocked out, stopped, trying to survive (running), or forced to quit on their stool. Maidana remained dangerous in both fights and took a lot of punishment against Devon. Being hurt doesn't deter him. He was hurt in a lot of his fights and came back stronger than ever. That's heart! If he gets hit with a good shot, he just sets, pulls up his trunks, and goes back to war. You underestimate his warrior's spirit. Finally, "refuse to lose"... I mean everyone loses, except for Mayweather until time catches up. Maidana's warrior spirit can't be denied. That's ridiculous.
G. Simply, Maidana will be in the shape of his life, with more tools, a deadlier arsenal, a sound gameplan, and the same warrior's spirit he has always had. He is the rare type of student that can learn at any stage of life. That, his power, his chin, and his heart, are what makes him special.
H. Maidana will get hit. But he will hit Broner. You act as if he won't be able to lay a glove on the guy. Maidana has been training body shots and mauling. Broner's open to the body, shoulder rollers always are. Guys like Floyd eliminate that weakness by changing looks, but Broner is not Floyd. Need you be reminded of that?
Nevermind, Maidana will do the reminding better than I ever could.
When he doesn't knock him out, I hope you guys still post under your regular accounts.
Not necessary... But I do not fear public embarassment.
I expect you to give Maidana all his props when everything I say comes to light. No lame excuses, please.
let's be real about it. if broner doesn't beat maidana he should be woefully embarrassed. he's in his prime, "undefeated," is said to have great defense and is mayweather 2.0. i'm saying maidana by ko just to ruffle feathers. this hype machine golden boy built better impress or I'ma laugh my ass off.
granted paulie already exposed that fool (as did ponce), maidana could very well beat him. it's 50/50.
When you get done doing all of the explaining, I still hope you guys (that keep saying that Maidana is going to knock Broner out) keep posting under your regular accounts when he doesn't.

I am not suggesting that Maidana is as good as Duran was or something like that, but I am pointing out that Duran had a brawling style. People assign such a stigma to the word "brawling" nowadays. Just because I say Duran had a brawling style, that does not mean I am saying he wasn't skillful. See its like Zen.. according to Zen, many people take different paths to get to the same mountaintop. Too often nowadays in boxing, people think there is only one path to the mountaintop, when that couldn't be farther from the truth. Any style, when applied to meticulous perfection and to its full potential, gets you to the same place. Bruce Lee believed that too.
Another example of a brawler is my boy Provodnikov.. He just blitzed Bradley and Alvarado.
As to Maidana's chin, its great. Ortiz is a big puncher and was in his prime when he dropped Maidana. More importantly, Maidana might have, quite possibly, more heart than Duran did. He has legendary heart, and I saw that from jump. I can't ever see El Chino quitting. Ever.
Broner will have his hands full against a very motivated Maidana with a future HOF coach and the same S & C coach that was with Pac in his prime. Its an example of all the pieces coming together.
I know Broner is bulky.. but that will work against him. He didn't bring his power up. Size does not = Power every time. Broner is such an example of this. Maidana, however, has brought his power up, and he had no trouble icing Karass who is bigger, and Lopez, who is arguably bigger, than Maidana.
Alexander was a bad night for Chino. Bad gameplan, bad conditioning, and hugged to death.

terrible comparison.. duran wasnt simply a brawler, he was one of the best technicians of his generation. very smart and skillful fighter, unlike maidana who is not only a brawler but a wild one at that. also leonard slept on durans strenght and power leaping up to 147 from 135 and willingly fought durans fight, he didnt even try to box duran in their first fight.
as for broner he isnt as flat footed as ppl claim he is, he can use his legs when he wants or needs to. its not his primary style for sure and he isnt as good fighting that way as he is walking ppl down, but he can do it none the less. perhaps not good enough to beat a smart and skilled pressure fighter adept at cutting the ring of and jabbing his way in but he isnt fighting someone like that. he is fighting wild ass marcos maidana, they might have added a decent jab to his arsenal and straightened out his punches some but he is still easy work for a good technician provided they dont get caught. maidana does have that punchers chance but thats it.

unless broner beats himself by getting overconfident and allowing himself to get distracted like you pointed out. which is very much a possibility but i think after the way he looked against paulie and knowing what a big puncher maidana is he will take this fight very seriously. at some point i wouldnt be surprised at all if he overlooks someone and gets his ass whupped though, just not this next fight.

i cant stand broner to be honest, but you cant knock his boxing ability. have you seen the size of broner compared to maidana?!?!
yes im well aware that brawlers can beat boxers, but i just cant see maidana beating broner. maidana does not belong at 147. he should be at 140. i remember the alexander fight!

highly doubtful. el chino is probably gonna get chinned. broner is too big, too fast and too good for a face first brawler like maidana whos best days were at 140.

Broner didn't bring his power up. He made the mistake of bulking up TOO much. Its a balance. He has the Jeff Lacey syndrome right now.
Brawlers can beat Boxers. Look it up. Especially if said boxer has his feet planted in cement.
SRL, the best of his era, was stormed by Duran. I think Mayweather has changed paradigms and ways of thinking in the sport, but there is room for more than one style at the upper echelons.
Look for a super motivated, in shape, sound gameplan having Maidana on Dec 14, and a distracted, overconfident, shellshocked Broner.

Maidana just went from a C fighter to C+. Should be enough to beat Broner but I don't think it'll happen.

its like this...
C against Khan and Devon
B+ when he got with Garcia
A with Garcia and Ariza
watch
foreal, alot of you should start changing your predictions now.
One of the things that has always held maidana back, his conditioning, is now no longer a problem. This will also help with the "weak to the body" crap you all be saying. He'll be a piece of steel in there, relentless and powerful. Broner is done for.
