Wow what a fight, forgot how awesome this one was
Perfect contrast of style. Mayorga was coming off an upset KO of Andrew Lewis and Forrest had just beaten Shane Mosley in big upsets. This for the undisputed 147 pound title.
Enjoy!
After he got his ass knocked out and beat again he starting claiming injuries. Getting KO'ed does not make the person KO'ed the better fighter. Mayorga was/is an idiot but when he was focused he was a tough outing for anybody. But a lot of the times he wasn't so he wouldn't train right amongst other things.
Forrest fought scared in the rematch and ended up losing. These losses hurt him from becoming potentially an ATG.
Yes that and injuries,,,
If he beat mayorga and stayed healthy, we would have seen forrest vs oscar, winky, etc
Its a shame what happened,, but thats the way it goes sometimes
Mayorga has the kind of style that should have been corrected a long time ago but worked wonders against Forrest. You normally see that style from fighters who are too stubborn to learn the fundamentals, Oscar and Felix Trinidad....I'm sure they ran across fighters at the gym who were wild/ unorthodox which is why Mayorga couldn't phase them, Forrest on the other hand looked like he never seen it before and he folded surprisingly quick.
I was there at Pechanga for this fight. It was pretty crazy. Very small ballroom. Mayorga walked thru the back of the room to get to his dressing room during one of the undercards and started to get people going. He was definitely in Vernon’s head. I was a few seats behind Margarito who took off pretty quickly after the fight was stopped. I remember whishing King and Arum could get together and make that fight instead of the Vernon rematch. That would have been a fun fight at the time.
I would still pay to see a Mayorga/Margarito fight

what i got from that fight is styles make fights , and skills dont always pay the bills ...
that is why i think duran thinking floyd jr is average is normal and i think even chavez sr would've made floyd that way ....
Skills pay the bills about 90% of the time,,, this was one of the 10% times it doesnt
Wow! this turned into a Floyd thread by the first comment, well done guys
It always does,,, especially when the topic is around the welter division
Mayweatherr is a much better boxer than Forrest.
FLoyd is a more complete boxer, but he isnt leagues above forrest,, honestly floyd would be hard-pressed to beat forrest, his jab and length would cause floyd alot of problems,,,
..and chavez sr was much better fighter than mayorga...
Yes he was,,
I miss Mayorga. :(
I miss him too,,, I wish he would have fought margs, corrales, gatti, baldomir,,,, at welter mayorga was a monster,,, but then he went up in weight and tito ruined him... Mayorga was one of my all time favorites
I remember this fight from starting the biggest chain reaction of ****ery I've ever seen.
Mayorga beat Forrest 2x, unifying the WBC/WBA belts
Spinks (IBF champ) beats Mayorga to become undisputed champ
Judah beats Spinks to become undisputed champ
Judah has a "Zab moment" and loses to Baldomir
So after all that ****ery....Carlos "Tata" Baldomir became lineal welterweight champion.

This fight was one of those rare situations where the better fighter ends up losing. Forrest was a great boxer, but he had his mental lapses. When he was on though he was very difficult to beat.

Jesus man how in the hell do you turn everything about Floyd?
Andrew "6 heads" Lewis, damn I forgot how Mayorga beat him and then Forrest then loses to Spinks??? What a crazy time in boxing!!
Spinks fought like a pure bich in that fight. Everytime Mayorga was coming on and hurting him, Spinks would fake a slip and throw himself to the floor.
