To me he seems like hes specially feather fisted and not as exiting , he still makes the same mistakes defensively he always made, only now he throws less so i guess they figure the less he throws the least likely hell get caught.
He has to this point, but it's not exactly easy to completely overhaul a fighter's style after they've won world titles fighting a certain way. Especially an egomaniac like Khan.
It looks to me like he's thinking too much now instead of just fighting naturally. That can be very dangerous. I think he's set in his ways and getting a new trainer defeats the point. Hill is trying to change up his style, but its that style that made him effective.Where he was a very good fighter with a glass chin, now he's becoming an average fighter with a glass chin. He will never be an elite fighter. Hill is taking away the tools that would possibly get him an upset against someone like Mayweather. Khan has to throw a lot of punches and move around the ring. That's what got him to where he is now. To make him slow down and become a thinking fighter takes away from his strengths.
Khan is being trained by Virgil Hunter, not Virgil Hill.
Haha! Just noticed after you pointed it out. It should be "looks worsed"
Worse.
Sadly the maidana vs diaz comparison is right. It reminds me of May snr trying to make Hatton more slick and better defensively. Unless its making slight gradual additions you end up taking away as much as you put in. It all has impacts on the style and you can't entirely change a leapards spots.
A lot of it has further confused him and his flow. He looks completely dumb founded when enduring an attack.
Been saying this for some time now, virgil seems to have slowed him down and its always been his work rate that got him where he is. He should have stay with roach but just distanced himself from a tare-up in the later round and use his reach and boxed, and guaranteed he wouldn't have lost his belts, cause he has a lot of ability that people don't give him credit for. In saying all that he is a bit chiny, but I will give virgil some credit he's working on fattening up his neck which could have and impact on his shot resistance.
i disagree completely.
blaiming khans chin for all his failures is just an excuse and a lazy one at that. his problems go far beyond that.
hunter is trying to improve those flaws, but it takes time. it might even get worse before it gets better but its somethign that has to be done. khans flaws are too big and many, at this level he simply wont get away with it anymore.
hunter really istn trying to change his style, just make him pay more attention to his distancing, pick his punches more and most importantly pay attention to whats coming back. i agree amir looks like he is overthinking at the moment, but thats natural as its a lot to keep in his head all at once. with time these things will become natural and he will be in a perfect situation where he both acts instinctively and makes calculated decisions at once.
hunter hasnt taken anything good away from khan, the punches he isnt throwing werent worth a damn anyways. just nervous energy turned into wasted motion. his energy is better spent on throwing accurate and intelligent punches. the same thing applies to his movement, he is still moving just not running around the ring like a chicken with its head cut off wasting energy. now he moves with intelligence, taking fewer but smarter steps so that he doesnt waste energy and puts himself in position to land quality punches.
all this wont happen over night though, it takes time. it does need to get done however, it was this or retirement. he will never be the smartest fighter in boxing, but if he wants to remain relevant he cant be the dumbest either.
Good post and very accurate appraisal of what's happening with him at the moment.
Agree completely.

He looks to take one step back in order to take two steps forward. Pretty common when changing coaches and styles.
Judge him after 4-5 fights and see if he's progressed.
Khan was at this best when he was overwhelming people with activity
With Virgil, he's standing back more using his jab... His problem is Roach has him too impatient by nature now, so he's jumping in with easy to figure out combinations way too often.
The slower pace just leaves him open between combinations... So the opponent can see he ends his combinations with a straight right, or throws 3 or 4 punches (or whatever) so they thing "as soon as he throws that 4th punch, I'm leaping in with a left hook".
I was really excited when Khan came onto the scene, but sorry to say as one of his early fans, i do not think he has the stomach for boxing anymore. He might have his pride and need to prove he is no bambi, but thats not enough.
Sorry Khan - stick to banging bengali's from Heckmondwicke.
There's just no solution for Khan. He's done man. His punch resistance is only gonna get weaker.
Knowing his biggest flaw (his chin) and still went with the wrong coach. He shouldve been with someone like Emmanuel Stewart or Hunter from the beginning. When you have a wet toilet paper chin you gotta find someone who will help you hide it.

I want Ruslan vs Khan so Khan can get his ass whooped and cry like a baby and realize leaving Roach was idiotic.
So under Roach, Khan has iron chin against Prov and doesn't suffer KD's or get hurt?
You guys are more delusional than I thought when it comes to trainers.
I don't understand what people expect Virgil Hunter to do with Khan? I mean if you give him back to Roach, all he'll do is request light punching top guys like Malignaggi rematch, Peterson rematch, maybe GBP and TR could work together to make Khan vs Vazquez since Vazquez is talking about moving up. That's about it, no trainer can ever make Khan's chin tougher. Khan vs Guerrero is an excellent fight which I see Khan winning under any trainer.
Journeyman or gatekeeper or whatever, if you put Khan in there with a puncher he's gonna get hurt no matter who his trainer is. So let's cut the stuff about Hunter being bad or being overrated.

Great post, but its hard to read a lot into just two fights since the garcia loss. I think the shockingly little time he spends in the gym has a huge part to play in his regression.
I wouldn't say worse, but it definitely looks forced. He doesn't look like he as a lot of flow anymore. It looks like he has to think about everything before he does it and thats going to cost him against anyone with power.
