What was the most justifiable and understandable situation where a boxer quit a fight? And to reverse the question, what was the most unjustifiable, inexplicable and absurd situation where a boxer quit?
Some examples of fights where boxers have quit / retired (RTD) :
Vitali Klitschko quits against Chris Byrd
Devon Alexander quits against Bradley
Alvarado quits against Provodnikov
Jorge Arce quits against Rogas
Ortiz quits against Maidana & Lopez
Really?

I don't see what you're getting at. He shamefully quit after the beating Khabib was giving him.
Another one is Dawson, literally got sent to hell against a feather fisted bible man
Ortiz, for quitting twice (Maidana & Lopez). He also said outright after the Maidana fight that he doesn't deserve to be beaten up-- if that's the case, then don't take up boxing. In the Lopez fight, he wouldn't continue because of his broken jaw-- well Arthur Abraham broke his jaw too but he didn't quit.
Some people keep on mentioning Cotto, he didn't quit. Besides what happened was actually an assault due to Margacheato's plastered wraps.
Now onto Mike Alvarado. Anybody who says a “quit is a quit” is ignorant and inarticulate. I really believe that and I don’t care who I offend. A quit is NOT a quit. When a fighter becomes a con man and ACTS like he is damaged more than he really is or when someone fights him back a little too much for his liking that’s a “QUIT JOB.” See Acelino Freitas vs. Diego Corrales and Juan Diaz. Victor Ortiz vs Marcos Maidana. Roberto Duran vs Ray Leonard. QUIT JOBS.
Then you have cases where a fighter succumbs. He simply can’t go any further. His body and mind believe they are separating. That’s capitulation. Succumbing to the circumstances. That’s the prisoner of war who gets captured by the enemy and he finally gives information after they pierce his testicles with sharp objects. Yes I’m being graphic because I’m pissed.
I received about 10 emails asking me about this and I’m aggravated with media and fighters. Muhammad Ali sat on his stool after the 10th round against Larry Holmes. He didn’t complain to his corner for stopping the fight. Hey tough guys? Was he damn quitter? He has more balls then any fighter I have ever seen. But he had enough. Look at Arturo Gatti in the corner when his fight was about to be stopped against Floyd Mayweather after the sixth round. He put his head on Buddy McGirt’s chest. Arturo the Lion Heart wanted no more. His body had enough.
Evander Holyfield once said that any man will quit under the right circumstances. And he was telling the truth. I’m glad you brought up Aaron Pryor vs Alexis Arguello and Manny Pacquiao vs Erik Morales. The common trend in those fights were successive brutal fights were the loser took punishment over a few fights and not just one. That falls in line with Mike Alvarado. In order he fought Breidis Prescott who is as big a puncher there is at the lower weight in an absolute war where his face was gashed open, Mauricio Herrera who is a tough sob in another high contact fight, Brandon Rios 2x, once he was stopped in a brutal fight and the next where he went 12 brutal rounds where he hurt repeatedly and then he faces Ruslan the Cold Killer.
What the heck else do these people want from Mike? Seriously I understand the man is a fighter and he knows what he signed up for. I get all of that. But maybe he thought he was dying. It can happen. All of these dam tough guys screaming he’s a quitter need to shut their dam mouths. A kid named Frankie Leal just died.
This is coming from a trainer who prepares their fighters to die in a boxing ring and I tell them quitting is not acceptable. I get up at 4am in the morning in the freezing cold so I can witness the preparation and not take their words. I understand what it takes and what the human body has to go through. But people are just so over the top with their basic general criticisms it sickens me.
I can remember when Gerald McClellan took his last knee against Nigel Benn. The damn announcers were suggesting he quit. Sure he quit, the man had brain damage and went legally blind. He felt his body leaving him. I have never been so aggravated with how cruel people are. When a man gives what Alvarado has given, he needs to be left alone.
He didn’t rob us of an event. He didn’t give us a con job or a bull**** excuse. He simply had enough and bowed out gracefully. He succumbed to the punishment over the course of some very tough fights. Leave him alone *******s!!!!!!!
:boxing::boxing::boxing:
Arce and ortiz. Arce had a money fight lined up and Ortiz just quit
Alexander got head butted and got blood in eyes, been there and it hurts, similar to campbell who incidentally also git head butted by same fighter (bradley) but campbell was more of a quit
Alvarado was done
If he didn't quit why didn't he protest the stoppages vs pacroids and bumgarito?
His uncle stopped the margarita fight and the ref stopped the Pac fight.
Chad Dawson, he was got dropped against pillow hands. He had no injury,he just knew he was down on the scorecards and would need a KO to win instead he told the ref that he was finished.:thumbsdow
Guzman quitting against Khabib was pretty pathetic
Really?

Id go with Arce! He knew he was in line for a pay day vs Nonito and didn't wanna mess that up by getting his ass beat by an unknown in Rojas.

I'm not sure you know what quitting means. The only clear quit job on this list is Ortiz and MAYBE Arce--but Travieso is all warrior so I dont buy it.
You forgot Kermit the frog cintron when he jumped off the ring against Paul Williams & made it look like he got hit by a truck.
I thought Cintron was winning that fight before the leap of frog.

You've clearly never seen the Robinson-Maxim fight. If you had, you'd know exactly why Robinson was completely drained and why Maxim was still fresh by comparison.
1) Sugar Ray Robinson vs Joey Maxim was the ATW(All Time Worst). He was winning and was experiencing the same heat as his opponent and pretended to not be able to continue even though he was the one beating the other dude up.
2) Camacho quitting vs Rosario from just one punch and running the rest of the fight was 2nd worst. Camacho quit vs Trinidad too and resorted to hugging to avoid a fight when he felt Tito's punch.
3) Duran vs Leonard was 3rd worst because he hadn't taken punishment vs a guy who could never hurt him.
What was the guys name, Puerto rican, who went across the pond and gave a great account of himself to quit in the late rounds? Dark skin dude.
That was the most egregious instance of quiting I've ever witnessed.
Ah talking about Jose A Gonzalez? He went over to Scotland and fought Ricky Burns, he was well ahead on the cards but he quit with a hand injury in the 9th round

Quitting is met with so much negativity in this sport that even though someone like Cotto who was well within his right to quit against Margarito, as was Alvarado against Provodnikov people don't want to hear that they quit. There are different forms of quitting, when you don't have anything else to offer and your taking substantial punishment your well within your right. Now what Duran did or Ortiz against Maidana (Ortiz was ahead in a very winnable fight) that can't be justified. So I didn't like what the ref did to Alvarado, then again it's more because of how ruthless boxing fans can be.
