Just rewatched my fav fight of all time Hagler-Hearns again and i dont get it. Two ATG Boxers in their prime coming out with the first bell and swinging for 8 Minutes straight. Usually Wars between ATGs start with the fighters trying to feel each other out and trying to establish jabs/hooks etc. and the war breaks out midway through the fight (Ali-Frazier, MAB-Morales, Gatti-Ward)
Right on the dome, too. He ate one of the strongest punches in boxing history right on the dome.
yeah one of the rare times in boxing that a fighter got a big cut in the forehead caused by a punch and not from a headbutt.
1. I love the thread title,, made me giggle
2. Hearns thought he could knock out hagler, since tommy had just destroyed Duran, thought he could do the same to marvin
3. Hagler thought he couldnt stay on the outside and box with hearns, he needed to get inside and stay there,,
4. So basically both guys' gameplans were to come right at the other,,,
5. Hagler was dodged, screwed, many times in his career,, his first big "name" fight vs duran, hagler didnt dominate and earned little respect, duran even though he lost, got all the accolades.... Hagler was pissed, and determined,,, he was basically the terminator and was going to get his dues,,,,
6. Hagler wasnt going to be denied, Hearns tried to box after the 1st but hagler wouldnt allow it...
great points!
:lol1: Exactly! Can you picture Hagler or Hearns ever saying health comes first?
You have a guy in your avi that outweighed his last opponent by 15lbs, yet took very few chances & was getting walked down by him, and you're actually making that comment?? :pat:

Dude there still is only one fighter in the history of the sport who said health comes first and self preservation, Floyd Mayweather.
No other fighter even today says things like that when it comes to an opponent.
Mayweather is not a natural born fighter, he was just forced to box at a young age, he never loved it but does it only because he is good at it and he can make big money handpicking the right guys. He doesn't have the fighters mentality because he grew up spoiled.
Its funny because when Floyd and his dad were not on good terms, Floyd Sr would tell the truth about his son, call him spoiled, and never been in a dog fight, he even knows his own son is soft lol
Tim Bradley has a fighters mentality for sure.
heres my take..i have met hagler,he said the tour to promote the fight was a pain,he & tommy would fly from state to state & marvin would ask the pilot to land first as "he was the champ"
MMH also said tommy got under his skin as tommy was saying he was going to knock his bald head off on fight night
MMH knew when he took tommy best shot he was "all mine"
while im here..i have met sugar ray too,he too planned to take the fight to hagler but after he got knocked down 1 week to go by taylor in sparing he (srl) decided to box
hagler initiated it and hearns was foolish enough to go along at first. by the time he realized he was better of boxing hagler had already took too much out of him.
i believe hagler did it for a number of reasons but the main thing was he didnt want to be at the end of hearns' punches. he also wanted to take the script away from hearns who usually was the one pressing early. by doing so he took hearns out of his game which may or may not have been part of the plan.
hearns couldnt in his wildest dreams expect someone to just attack him like that in the early rounds, the same way cuevas and duran didnt think hearns would go right after them early. when hagler did hearns' natural response was to make him pay for his aggression but hagler did a great job of brawling intelligently.
he only traded with hearns inside where tommy couldnt get enough leverage to hurt him and when he was outside he remained careful while still applying pressure and making hearns uncomfortable causing him to let big shots go at which point hagler made his move inside.
it was a brilliant strategy on haglers part, had he given hearns space and time to think he would have been killed. he took it away and exploited the greatest flaw in hearns' game, being too willing to fight when he would be better of boxing.
In all honesty its sad to see. Hearns speech is clearly impaired and he's dead broke.
That's one thing I like about how Floyd managed his career. He will retire in good financial condition. I hope other fighters follow in similar footsteps.
The remarkable thing was that Hearns seriously hurt Hagler in the 1st round and nearly ended the fight. Hagler definitely willed himself not to go down and from there on it was his fight.

Hagler initiated the attack, and Hearns threw back because no one had ever had the balls to try and KO Tommy in the 1st.
Turns out Hagler had the bigger c0ck. Maybe not longer, but definitely thicker.

yep,,,,hearns tried to bully the bully but haggler was one different kinda bully,,lol
That fight tarnished their legacies instead of using their god given gifts they decided to become human co.ck fighters
I just heard the worst post of alltime here.
Its top 3 ever for best fight.
The fight Has the best round ever .
The fight had mixed gameplans =surprise
Both are hall of famers and both are ATGs.
Tell me how it ruined their legacies ?
This fight will be talked about as long as boxing exsists.
Foolish comment imo.
You see when great fighters fight great fighters in their prime,
Its truely no less then 50/ 50 .
Its easy to just sit back and box vs a slower, less experienced ,flatfooted
Feather fist. And relax . Try fighting a real man , a real threat to your life .
Even in looking great you will take punishment .
Your will and heart will be tested.
These two didnt pick their own opponent, they were on a collision coarse.
Emmanuel Steward actually told Tommy Hearns to take out Hagler early no joke. Kinda backfired, Hagler was a bull and Hearns got the horns man. Hearns plan was to shock Hagler with sneaky shots with loaded power right hands, but Hagler ate those like candy one of the punches ripped Hagler wide open with a bad cut.
To this day that was the weirdest fight ever because you would never expect either guy just to keep throwing bombs it was like they really wanted to kill each other, they just slugged it out for three rounds, it truly was a war. They fought like two bulls in a china shop trying to destroy anything in their path.
