ESPN has been hyping a 30 for 30 film about the infamous no mas fight between duran and srl...
the clips show both guys talking about it, tyson was talking about it,
and best yet is they get both guys in the ring again and go over how the fight went down,,,
ESPN 30 for 30 films are usually very good,, this one looks super sweet,,
the holmes-ali one was kinda boring, but this one should be pretty sweet, i think it airs next week
Did you see the 30 for 30 episode "No Mas?"
I've seen it at least 6 times! History was not as kind to Sugar Ray Leonard? The documentary ends with SRL going to Panama present day and questioning Duran in the middle of a boxing ring and asking him why he quit. SRL said that during this questioning session he was very apprehensive because he did not know what Duran would do - especially being inside a boxing ring. I say troubled because SRL did not get the respect he felt he deserved. In fact many feel that SRL did not win, Duran quit.
Leonard led by a small margin of 68-66, 68-66 and 67-66 on the judges scorecards at the time of the stoppage.
What the hell there are still seven rounds to go?
SRL is worth over 120 million today and still seems to be bothered by this.
After Leonard vs Duran II, Duran fought 45 more times winning three more titles.
This was not the only ghost in SRL closet. Marvin Hagler vs SRL! was the undisputed World Middleweight Champion from 1980 to 1987. Hagler made twelve undisputed title defenses and holds the highest KO% of all middleweight champions at 78%. At six years and seven months. Hagler later said that, as the fighters embraced in the ring after the fight, Leonard said to him, "You beat me man". "He said I beat him," Hagler said after the fight, "and I was so happy".
Leonard denied making the statement claiming he only told Hagler, "You're a great champion". Leonard was announced as winner by split decision, which remains hotly disputed to this day. Haglar lost in a split decision to SRL. Judge JoJo Guerra, scorecard was 118–110 for SRL. Judge Dave Moretti, who scored it 115–113 for Leonard. Lou Filippo, who scored it 115–113 for Hagler. Associated Press: 117–112 Hagler, Chicago Sun-Times: 115–114 Hagler, Washington Post: 114–114.
Sugar Ray had to face his fears to even step through the ropes against Duran. Although he was installed as 9-to-5 fovourite in the first bout, according to Leonard Gardner it was a matchup that neither Leonard or Angelo Dundee wanted.
The WBC had ordered him to defend against Duran ,who was the number one contender, or risk being stripped of his title. Despite that Leonard started negotiations to fight Pipino Cuevas who held the WBA strap.
It was only when the commander of the Panamanian national guard, Colonel Ruben Paredes (probably on behalf of the president who was friends with Duran) interceded with the WBA which was run by a fellow Panamanian, Rodrigo Sanchez, that the Cuevas fight fell through and Leonard was forced to sign against Duran.
Fast forward to the 1:17.Stop spreading lies homeboy.
what? what happens at 1:17? does Duran not quit?
Duran himself has changed his opinion on what happened that night multiple times, his manager admits he came up with the stomach cramp story, his own manager admits that at one point Duran tried to make out that there was a shoulder injury...and if you watch the fight, once the referee has eventually stopped it, Duran pretends like he can carry on fighting, even raising his hands in the classical boxer stance. Why did he do that? was he pretending that he thought the round was over? LOL
Get over it man, I'm a Duran fan too but the man quit, he quit like a *****. You may not like it, it may break your heart, but it happened.
maybe your thinking of "ring generalship"?
Trinidad got outclassed by Hopkins. Canelo got outclassed by Mayweather. Looking like you don't even belong in the ring with the guy is being outclassed.
kessler would disagree............
being outclassed does not imply that someone was being beat badly.........it means they didn't control the momentum of the fight. they were missing wildly & they were hit more often then their opponent. a fight can be very slow pace (& both men not hit much)
"no one gets outclassed in a close fight"
so what was kessler vs calzaghie? many gave kessler 5 rounds. i gave him 4........if he won 1 or 2 more it would have been a draw. most of the rounds were competitive but joe did slightly enough to begin to pull away a little bit...........kessler still overall got outclassed though.

Quick rematch? Duran had 5 months to prepare, that is another myth, same as Duran's excuse that he had cramps and wasn't prepared.
Duran's former manager admitted that when he asked Duran what to tell the media immediately after the fight, Duran said something along the lines of "make it up" or "tell them it was cramps".
What happened in this fight was that Leonard didn't go to war like he had done previously, he out jabbed and out worked Duran on the outside. He used his superior reach, height and speed. He made Duran look amateurish at times, swinging and missing like a fool.
Duran's pride was hurt and he didn't have the balls to carry on, it's as simple as that. :wave:Fast forward to the 1:17.Stop spreading lies homeboy.
well, if you go back and watch the first fight you will see that even the first fight was actually very close. (it warranted the rematch)
but show me where I said that duran was getting blown out on the score cards in the 2nd fight? I'll be waiting. are you gonna respond to my comment or are you gonna respond to what someone else said............
heres my claims again. i said that it's a myth that duran didn't receive any backlash from his country. & it's a myth that he quit "because leonard wouldn't fight" he quit because he was being outclassed & the momentum wasn't going his way. he figured "I'm not gonna be able to win this style of fight" so i will quit.........thats the simple truth.

what's a myth is duran getting blown out and "outclassed". he was down 2 points on 2 cards and 1 on the other. and was taking no punishment.

duran not receiving backlash from his country is a myth created by modern fans..........it typically goes like "duran was too macho and leanord wouldn't fight so therefore he quit"
duran quit because he was being outclassed & couldn't get to leanord
:lol1:
ex..........actly

I hope they focus heavily on Leonard "forcing Duran into a quick rematch so he wouldn't be in the best shape for the rematch." The Leonard hater in me would love that.
And did Leonard also force Duran to balloon up to cruiserweight between the fights?
they freaking better lol here is the page from four kings where it talks about the government repealing the tax exemption http://books.google.com/books?id=5Og2QwoAgKoC&pg=PA120&lpg=PA120&dq=roberto+duran+taxes+no+mas&source=bl&ots=3Mrse-EkFu&sig=7VpKbdUqIPR1Yq5HO84G4pzvzjs&hl=en&sa=X&ei=itJWUpGqIZa54AOXhoHgBw&ved=0CEcQ6AEwBg#v=onepage&q=roberto%20duran%20taxes%20no%20mas&f=false four kings was pretty good read .. if you love boxing and have the spare time i recommend it homie
best boxing book ever. Panama threw his ass in jail and robbed him of most of his purse.
Duran is a goddam G
