I would go for Sergio. Interesting thing about Sergio is that he's not that big of a middleweight. He comes in the ring around 167-168. Canelo has topped at 170+ as a jr mw and even a ww like Ortiz, he came in at 164 vs Floyd. I know ppl might skeptical about Cotto vs a mw but its not a huge mw. It's vs a pretty damn good 1 though.
i think there isnt much difference in size between cotto and martinez. now would be a good time to catch martinez aswell.
i for one would not be in the least bit surprised to see cotto take the middleweight title from martinez. but he wouldnt keep it there for long!
either of them make sense to me anyway.
if he wants to make a decent bit of coin and have a competitive fight, go with canelo.
if he wants another title in another division and have a competitive fight, go with martinez.
They are both good fights and I would be happy watching either one.
From a money point of view the Canelo fight would generate more $$$$ though because he's a bigger draw than Sergio and because of the Mexico vs Puerto Rico rivalry. If Cotto wants the biggest purse possible then it's a no brainer which guy he should pick.
cotto should fight martinez first then try for canelo i think he can beat martinez but lose to canelo but if he beats both damn what a way to cap off a career
i wonder do ppl still consider cotto shot
The perception is that Cotto has a better chance to defeat Martinez at this point in his career than Canelo so Martinez would be a better choice in that sense. On the other hand, it's just the perception. It's not a guaranteed thing Martinez will look as bad as he did for Murray. Martinez might fail to impress again or come back with a fury. It's a gamble. I would also want to see this fight for Martinez just to gauge where he is for a Golovkin fight after.
Sergio does more for his legacy.
Cotto is still missing that signature win to cross over from being a good champion to a great champion and Martinez is his best opportunity.
His first lineal title and the first PR champion to win titles in 4 weight divisions
Which one would y'all rather see? :boxing: Both are good IMO and one is probably next up.
im a big sergio and cotto fan
sergio would win
not a canelo fan and cotto would win
rather see cotto vs canelo
Both are very tough fights for Cotto. I prefer Martinez just because it would probably be in New York so I could attend. The only thing I don't like about Martinez fight is that it will probably be at a cw and be for mw title.
I would love to see Cotto reach for the glory instead of the $$. Canelo just got spanked, he needs to win a fight, maybe against Molina. If they both win, then Cotto/Canelo with the winner fighting Floyd
Cotto - Maravilla was already in the pipeline. With Cotto having gone over to TR (tho as an indie - Cotto Promos) -'Nelo ain't gonna happen anytime soon.
TBH assuming that Sergio is back up to a decent level of fitness and his reflexes haven't deteriorated further, Maravilla - Cotto makes for the (IMO far) more exciting fight.
For me, whilst 'Nelo is solid with reasonably quick hands I've never really been that excited either by his style or his ability.
Cotto - Maravilla will have Maravilla darting in and out at speed (if he's still capable) with Cotto trying to close him down. Maravillas footwork and ability to slip the trap will probably determine the outcome. Very good fight IMO.
The only downer for me is that if Cotto does beat a faded Maravilla, I don't think he's really deserving of the Hopkins - Trinidad Lineal MW title that goes with the victory. Not when even DiBella has said that Golovkin is the heir apparent.
I wonder if Cotto could be tied into a conditional defence (for enough HBO $s, of course) in the event of him winning? Otherwise I see no reason he doesn't just drop back down again, taking the lineal title with him.
I like the Sergio fight better. In all honesty, for smart move choice, Martinez makes more sense when you figure he's at the end of his career as well as Cotto pretty much. Canelo is a bit more younger and refresher, and with Cotto's style, it could work into Canelo pretty much. Martinez on the other hand would make for a great fight with Cotto style wise and seeing as how Martinez hasn't looked tip top recently in his win, Cotto could be the man to end it.
I would go for Sergio. Interesting thing about Sergio is that he's not that big of a middleweight. He comes in the ring around 167-168.
