I think in the recent fights we have seen that boxing is not simply about power but skill.
Mayweather have average power but is an all time great.
Lucas is arguably the hardest hitter in his division but it was the more skilled boxer who won.
Ali was not the hardest punching heavyweight but was one of the greatest.
I think boxing fans, myself included, sometime get over excited when they see a power puncher as if that's they only thing that matters.
I've said it before, but it's GGGs ring IQ; his boxing intelligence and skill that are the key. Even without his much vaunted power he'd be close to or at the top of the pile. Having the power in every shot as well just allows him to display a tactical toolset all his own.
I know there's a lotta guys not yet sold, and fair enough, but the talks about fighting Ward, FMJ etc are not in jest. I guess we just gotta wait and see.
Then you've got your Stevensons, Clouds etc, with the big KO punch, but as often or not they'll be waiting half the fight for a chance to land it. These guys can be baffled or frustrated by a quicker or more skillful fighter (a la BHop -Cloud, 'Zaggy - Lacy).
A different type of power is the heavy handed volume punching of Kovalev, who doesn't wait for the ideal opening but just keeps throwing heavy, damaging punches up and down from any angle until his opponent folds.
At the end of the day, it could be said that every boxer will lose sometime, to someone, but to make the TS' generalisation does not really cover it: Perhaps I would say that 'power alone cannot ensure victory at the top level of boxing'.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is what you call a knowledgeable boxing fan.
I don't agree. GGG has a lot more in his locker than just pure power. He is a very efficient boxer who picks his shots well.
I see people riding this wave now. I like GGG but lets be serious hes a power puncher first and foremost hes not this elite boxer puncher with great defense. Can he box? Yeah sure but what the hell does that mean against Mayweather? It means nothing. Against Floyd his only hope is a KO.
Hes extremely slow and has nothing for Floyd. Hes much slower than Canelo FFS and Floyd made him look slow.
GGG will find this out soon when he faces the A talent.

ggg is not a good boxer...........it's the same thing when you guys were calling
lucas a good boxer...........(overrating the fighters skills all because you're excited about the power they posses)
ggg has a good jab & great power. he's explosive with it & he's decent with cutting the ring.........downside to his game. doesn't move his head, a bit slow, below average foot speed. can be out worked (if he can't get his power to you)
call it what it is.............
That's why the Stevens fight is going to be interesting. We need to know more about GGG. He gets hit too often. Is it because he wants to trade? Can he slip punches against quality fighters?
Re foot speed. We'll have to see. Timing, anticipation, patience counts here as well.
GGG will find this out soon when he faces the A talent.
Wilder has power and I'm not "excited" about his future. GGG shows real talent. That combo to knock out Macklin was a thing of beauty.
I think you mean power doesn't ALWAYS win fights which is true, but it does win fights quite often, even when the puncher is less skilled :

You don't know much about GGG if you think all he has is power.

power does win fights...but it alone will not keep you on top
this is more accurate than the TS post. In fact, I think the stellar years Matthysse, Golovkin, Stevenson and Kovalev have had up to this point have proved that yes power is one of the key components to winning fights and intimidating opponents. Great power can only go so far if 1) an opponent is not there to be hit (a la Mayweather) or 2) an opponent can take a mean punch (a la Danny Swift)

Well it can do, it's ridiculous to say that because of what happened on Sat, you could give several more examples where it has done, but styles do make fights, and it just all depends on the boxers at the time.

of course you need more than just power. Power is what intrigues casual fans and entices them to watch. In fact even though there are regulars here..I still feel like some of them are just casual fans and do not really enjoy the sweet science.
I think its the potential that excites people because footwork can be taught so can boxing power and speed are two things that can not be improved all that much that and the KO also gets people excited but when these guys step up in class of opponent they are generally exposed as one dimentional by superior boxers who have all the tools and also have better chins than the guys that are being laid flat by the big punchers
