“Maravilla” Martinez Update
By Gabriel F. Cordero
Argentinian WBC middleweight world champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez has said that he is looking to defend his title next year in Argentina. “There is nothing definite yet, but I will return in April or May of 2014 and that this opportunity is in Argentina,” Martinez said during a press conference in Madrid, where he demonstrated support for the city’s bid for the 2020 Olympics. One source has indicated that Martinez is seeking to resolve in a short time some personal and sports situations. When he returns, Martinez is expected to go directly into a big fight with no tune-ups.
Yeah but you can't compare GGG who's from Kazakhstan (the greatest country in the world BTW) and Murray who's British. You have that historical beef going on.
True.
Velez Sarsfield fans aren't the thoughest but problems there are becoming more than usual. Pumas just want to win the wallabies. I like the team but i don't like much the coach or the national rugby union. They couln't take advantage of goods results to turn the sport to professionalism.
Yeah, they might do it this year although I don't think they'll manage it in the next meeting (in Australia). Pumas had a horrible start this year but are improving by game. Last year they started well and worse towards the end. We'll see, I'm pulling for them though, I like their team spirit.
Along with the Vélez Sarsfield Stadium, the Estadio Ciudad de La Plata, some minutes south of Buenos Aires, also had been considered for the Martínez - Murray fight. This stadium is smaller (36.000 people seated), but much more modern and safer. The rain, for example, wouldn't have been a problem. They opted instead for Vélez Sarsfield, but the Estadio Ciudad de La Plata is the best option. And if you need a smaller arena, then you have the Luna Park.

Dang, how was the atmosphere during the fight though?
Electric I assume.
People still have a bad taste of Argentina after the Casimero fight
Well things get a little mix up when they fight a british boxer. The atmosphere were more like a soccer match. It was rainning a lot, people chanting but i did not saw any violence. I also saw pelechin Caballero win a title at Luna Park and nothing happened. The Casimero fight was really a shame. Camioneros is the union of truck workers who were Lazarte's main sponsor. They behave like barra bravas/hooligans and it is part of a bigger problem related to soccer and barrabravas. Fighters from Camioneros should't be allowed to get world title shots.
He may have been exaggerating about that, you never know. However, I have read it's dangerous to go to the stadium during some Velez Sarsfield games.
They're in a tough tournament the Pumas, it doesn't come much harder than Springboks and New Zealand.

I have been at the fight but I left right after Martinez fight. I heard that there wrere lots of people on the ring after the fight and it was damaged, so they couldn't do the Saucedo fight. I was at the opposite side from were boxers get to the ring, so i couldn't see all the spitting or drinks thrown you are talking. Lot of people after the fight were saying that Sergio lost and that he was a fraud. Other saw him winning. People were calm, chanting, that's all.

I like rugby. Against all blacks they did a lot better than against springboks. But people here is getting tired of Pumas. They haven't improve much from the 2007 world cup.

Haha... But eventually nothing happened... Anyway, what that story tells is not usual. I would think someone organized it to intimidate Murray.
Murray should have worn a Rolling Stone shirt at the press conference. I assure you that many of those aggressive guys are diehard Stones. Ask Mick Jagger or Keith.
I read a comment that said the HBO team only had seen such environment in a Joe Calzaghe fight.
I think Cotto would come here. I really don't see BA environment is a big deal. I understand if the noisy crowd in the last Martínez fight was seen as intimidating, but it's just a soccer-type of crowd, very common here: drums, songs, nothing unusual.

We needed ten police cars and motor bikes to escort us from the hotel to the venue, the Estadio Jose Amalfitani, which is where the football team Velez Sarsfield play... and where 40,000 Argentinians were baying for blood.
Never in my whole life have I felt so much excitement and fear at the same time. The crowd were fighting to get towards us, making death signs to us, spitting, throwing drinks. We were lucky that Neil Marsh had asked the security staff from the hotel who had been deputised to follow us to walk us to the ring. If they hadn't been around us, Martin might not have made it to the ring.
To be honest, if he'd won I don't think we'd have made it out of there alive. It was already like being thrown to the lions. When the fight finished, the crowd went crazy and hundreds were diving into the ring wrecking it so we did well to get out.
We all had to feel for Gary Buckland.
The super-featherweight had done ten weeks training, flown 7,000 miles to fight Fernando Saucedo in a world title qualifier and got there to fight at 7.30pm only to be told he was going on later. He was waiting in the dressing room watching it on TV. But by the time the fans had finished with the ring, after Martin's fight, there was nothing left of it.

I doubt there's gonna be many guys lining up to fight him in Argentina. The ideal would be for Mora to beat Quillin and then fight Martinez in a unification bout.
Anyone who wants to fight him will have to fight him Argentina because they'll be leaving a a ton of money on the table. Who has the leverage to say no? Only exception would be PPV fights like Cotto/Chavez/Canelo, which obviously wouldn't take place in Argentina.
Can't imagine Cotto or Canelo fighting in BA, can you?
As an aside, you watch the Pumas this morning?

I understand if the noisy crowd in the last Martínez fight was seen as intimidating, but it's just a soccer-type of crowd, very common here: drums, songs, nothing unusual. Plus I doubt Sergio could attract again such a crowd after his disappointing performance. Also the financial issues might be problematic. The government is going to lose the midterm elections in November and an overdue devaluation of the currency is expected by December or so, so for a while the tickets won't generate good revenues in dollars (but I don't know if this is very important comparing with TV revenues).
I'm not a big rugby fan and didn't watch the Pumas - All Blacks, but I know they played well, although they eventually lost 28-13.
How is cotto going to make.middle weight ??
Wouldn't have thought it'd be a problem since he's been fighting at LMW for a few years now, Sergio's a small middleweight anyway and could also go down.
In fact the question is whether or not they'd be fighting for Maravillas belt. It would be a bit farcical to do so IMO, unless Cotto's planning to move up which seems unlikely to say the least.
In addition, while Sergio's right that Cotto remains a bigger draw than GGG, I've a feeling HBO might be willing to take a financial hit on the purse to give Golovkin the shot a lineal.
That said, I was kinda assuming Maravilla had 2 fights left, a tune-up, then a big money cash out. This makes possible the option of a Cotto fight (without the belt on the line)at 154 followed by a cash out vs GGG, which is almost certain to be a bigger fight on that timeline - assuming Gena keeps fighting and winning. Martinez can't afford to lose the lineal, though, if he wants the best payday 'gainst GGG.
great in argy
the whole world saw martinez lose his last fight, it was clear as day, he was out boxed and clearly lost, but he got a home town gift, hell the ref even refused to count a clear knockdown on martinez
anyone going out to argetina should be aware they have no chance of winning, even if they dominate the fight and score knockdown, you will need to knock martinez out cold before the 12th to win, you will not get a decision
a real man would fight murray in us or ok, martinez knows he lost in his heart, thats why no rematch happened
That's his mandatory anyway. It seems like he's trying to end his career without fighting him though. Not sure how he'll get away with it unless he pays Rubio some step aside money.

I think Martinez should choose Rubio as his come-back opponent. Not a big name, but presents a bigger threat than a tune-up.

The Argentinian national press only partially support this information:
Clarín: "I want to fight in May next year. I'm recovering (from hand and knee injuries) faster than I expected. They mention many names, I want to fight everybody. I want my next fight again in Argentina".
Perfil: "April or May"... "Cotto or Canelo, we will see".

I'm glad he's looking for a big name with no tune up, but what big name is going to go to Argentina?
As champion he should defend against a top guy. If he was not a champion he could take a tune up. He should fight GGG if GGG agrees to go to Argentina.
Golovkin would go to Argentina, but if he knocks him out, would he get out of the stadium alive?
