Rigondeaux has shown incredible ability and potential so early in his pro career. However, he's thirty-two years of age, and if he falls into the pit of only fighting twice a year, he's going to go down in history as a footnote- a guy like Donald Curry.
I think this is all part of Bobs plan to make Rigo cold so when he gets in the ring he'll lose and Bob won't have to worry about us hardcore fans asking about a guy he says he can't promote or sell to the casuals.
Put it this way if he keeps Rigo busy nobody will be able to beat him anytime soon.
why "for sure?"
he's already beaten donaire. what other fights are out there?
he's got hall of fame stuff for sure, but the hall of fame isn't concerned exclusively with skills and talent. the voters look at your resume primarily. outside of donaire rigondeaux has an extremely ordinary resume. he has no wins of note other than donaire.
it's unfortunate, but i think rigondeaux has got his best win already. he'll be an "if only," type of fighter when we look back at him.
he is 32, tiny, and had several hundred amateur fights. 122 looks like a dead weight class. rigondeaux looks like a natural bantamweight. the downside of his career is not far away.
I see him as a rare athlete that comes along every so often. I'd compare him to Gale Sayers. I think it's safe to say his career will be short, but that doesn't necessarily mean it won't be hof worthy.
Say he fights two more fights with top rank then goes to another promotion and fights 5-7 more times without a loss. That might bring him to 20 wins or so. A possible Donaire rematch looms, throw in Santa Cruz, Kiko, Mares, Romero, Gonzalez, Frampton etc etc and you're building your resume. Might not be the best, but for someone who turned pro at the age of 28, I think it's safe to say the voters will look past that and might take a gander at his amateur accomplishments as well as what he did in his short time as a professional.
Then again he could fight "names" to help his cause like montiel, vic, terrazes, mathebula or even Moreno(if he fights at 122)
He's got a window- albeit small - but I could see it happening if he fights 3-4 times a year starting in 2014.
I think he can earn and get better fights at 126 BUT he is a small guy!!!!
He looked like a super fly next to Donaire but he has the skills to be there.
Fans need to understand that often power doesn't move up with you and he's not a power guy but he has enough timing with his shar shooting to make up for the power. Then again maybe he gains some pop with the extra pounds. I think he can handle most feathers, at fight time they'll be lightweights but he should 128 atleast and giving 8 or 9 isn't a big del unless your an inside fighter and theres none of them left. :buttkick:

So you think if he beat Nishioka, Mathebula, Arce and Vazques JR in the year 2012 they would? I dont think so i would take Donaire and lets say Santa Cruz or Framptom in 2013 over those 4 any day (not that any of them will get in the ring with him is just an example) and to be completely honest with you i still dont think they would make him fighter of the year anyway. He could be an ATG just never a popular one because of the lack of opposition, the age he got his chance, and also the lack of support even from his own promoter. It's just sad but true facts.
It's impossible to say because he didn't take those four fighters on in one year. Obviously those four guys were good enough for people to call Donaire a Fighter of the Year for beating them, who's to say people wouldn't say the same about Rigondeaux?
Beating Donaire and Santa Cruz in one year would be a great case for Fighter of the Year. This year he would be competing against the winner of Matthysse-Garcia. But he doesn't have that second match-up lined up yet, and realistically Santa Cruz isn't going to fight him anytime soon anyway.
So we're left with what I was getting at in the first place, and the topic of this thread: it'd be better for Rigondeaux to find any fight at all at this point than to hold off on big matches that simply aren't there to be found.
People talking **** about you is better than people not talking about you at all.
Nobody is going to give him Fighter of the Year for one win, it doesn't matter how big that one win was.

Everybody would talk sh*t and tear him a new hole if he started fighting bums matter fact even if he fought anybody not near the top in or around his division, everybody specially people here would sh*t on it not give him fighter of the year.
But i agree if no other good options are available and at 5'4" i don't see many he should keep active with the best he competition available. That's the problem with starting taking out the top, now the only way to go is down the only thing he can do is wait for a real challenge to come along.

Nobody wants to fight him because he brings the combination of 1) tons of risk for 2) very little reward. Nonito Donaire was a popular fighter before he took on Rigondeaux and now people **** on him for taking the fight and losing.
Rigondeaux would be better off fighting four bums a year. It would keep him active and at least somewhat visible, and it would give him a chance to build up a fanbase to see him fight live.
If he did that then he could get better fighters to take a payday and risk a loss against him.

Who exactly do you see jumping at the bits to really fight him ? All the time you see Super bantams calling everyone out except him and when 1 eventually does is a half excuse of how they would beat him in their imagination but they rather not fight him in real life because blablabla. Would you want him to fight trash 4 times a year? how would that get him any closer to being one of the ATG ?
Besides realistically he just escaped the regime slave athlete life in Cuba too late in to have a long rung at a career as a pro.

One of the most bizarre comparisons ever !
Rigo vs Donaire
Douglas vs Tyson
O.o
Tyson almost K.Oed Douglas and he would win 9/10 fights against Douglas
Donaire loses 10/10 fights against Rigondeaux
Let's not get carried away. Rigo clearly won, but Donaire did knock him down pretty hard in the 10th. 10/10? Don't think so.
Rigo has ATG talent and skill; unfortunately, he'll never realize his potential because he got the chance at a pro career too late in life.
And this is the other major reason why Guille won't be an ATG. There just aren't enough high quality opponents at 122 to make a short run at greatness, no matter how quickly Rigondeaux goes through them.
Unfortunately it's this right here. Great fighters are marked by their overcoming great opposition. In Rigondeaux's case, the great opposition just isn't there. Donaire will likely be the biggest win of his pro career unless he takes on Mikey Garcia three years down the line.
I don't see Buster Douglas in the Hall of Fame for knocking out Mike Tyson. Rigo needs a lot more fights than a possible "One Hit" wonder of a fight against Donaire to be considered an ATG. The TS might have a point.

Back to topic , I think Rigondeaux is doing very well at this rate , and I expect him to box till late 30s , he has still more 7 years , he depends on brain and skills more than anything .
It's too late for Rigo to reach ATG status. He's already 30 and he only has 12 pro fights. Plus to mention at 122 he wont get enough creditable opponents to make his resume ATG.
May not go down as an ATG, but he'll be in the hall of fame for sure.

I agree with this.
Wish Rigondeaux was 10 years younger, for I fell in love with his skills after watching him fight Donaire.
