I admire athletes who handle it well when things don't go their way. Abner Mares is the most recent example, and I wish more would follow it.
Being gracious and humble doesn't mean agreement with the officiating necessarily, or refusing to give your point of view. Mares has gently made it known that he felt he was responding to the ref when the fight was called, and that if he had been allowed to finish the round and regroup it "would've been a different story". However, he gives genuine credit to his opponent -- calling him "the better man that day", and there is no trace of bitterness. I went into the fight a fan of Abner, but am only more so now.
Q: Are there other fighters who stood out to you as those who handled disappointment with marked class and good sportsmanship?
I felt Austin Trout did after his loss to Canelo, in a fight that was much closer than was being acknowledged and was in part ruined by the ridiculous 'open scoring' system.
Anyone else you remember?
just remember him getting ko'ed via body shot by the past prime/smaller gerry penalosa, quitting against israel, and getting KTFO by nishioka (same nishioka everyone ****ted on donaire for fighting) in the 3rd round......
He was beating the sht out of peñalosa till the body shot luck if I a ever saw it in a fight. He dropped nishioka till he got caught himself. If im not mistaken he was beating vazquez. Gonzalez has great power along with great boxing skills his downfall has always been his chin and body
Some of you are absurd.
No losses? Overrated, hypejob who has been carefully matched (Floyd, Broner, Calzaghe, Mares a week a ago)
Lose? Overrated, hypejob who had been carefully matched.
LOSES HAPPEN. EVEN TO THE GREATS. No wonder Floyd protects his zero. To some fans he's a hype job if he is undefeated, but if he loses, that just proves he's a hype job, too
Dude showed a lot of class. I love his story, his struggle, and his background. He has tons of pride and a lot to fight for, for those reasons, I'm sure he'll bounce back soon from that KO. That being said, I can't really fault the ref for the stoppage. Mares was really rocked the 2nd time, and rather than listening to Mares' response, he looked at his demeanor and into his eyes and determined it was in Mares' best interest to stop the fight. As a fighter, I'd feel the same way Mares feels, but I just can't blame the ref or say he was wrong.
he did not look into his eyes after the second kd. people need to stop with that lie. Mares head was facing down from the count of 1 til the count of 3 when he started to get up. As soon as Mares started to get up, the ref jumped on him. How did he look in his eyes?

It was a fine stoppage Mares was badly hurt and unable to continue simple as that, he is still an excellent fighter, he just got caught by a harder puncher and was classy in the post fight interview.
Mares will bounce back with some good wins i am sure.
how do you know he was unable to continue when he wasn't given the chance?

I disagree. I don't think he would've recovered, even in the 1 minute. We'll never know of course, but I don't think anyone can call that a premature stoppage. He was very hurt.
I didn't say he would have recovered, I said IF he would have recovered. My only beef is that the ref should have given him a 10 count, that's all.
It's like that everywhere now... if you're soft-spoken and respectful people think you are weak, but what is weak about being prudent? Courteous? It's strength of character, which is what so many lack these days....
Very true, I have been very courteous to people and they then think they can jump in line or say something that over steps the boundaries of our relationship.
People think loud, is tough but in reality I have found in my life that the quiet one's are the one's you need to be worried about.
Unfortunately that doesn't sell with today's youth. They want to see the Adrian Broner's of the world be loud, obnoxious and arrogant. That's their role models and the way this generation handles itself.
They see humility and honor as being a weakness.

Also, I sort of hate to admit it, but I have been waiting for Mares to get knocked out since the Agbeko farce. Maybe that is a little vindictive, but I'm sure I'm far from the only one who feels that way.
However, best to let bygones be bygones, at least at this point. I mean it sucks to see a fighter like Agbeko get robbed blindly by corrupt officiating, and that fight was beyond ridiculous. It's not really Mares' fault though. Repeatedly throwing low was his fault. But, it's tough inside the ropes and a fighter does what they can, I guess. I do hope he can recover from this, he's a good fighter. Also though, I always love to see an old vet win a big fight like that.
People that call Mares a hye jobs are idiots. He fought in the last 2 years, arguably the toughest group of lb4lb fighters and won all of them. Johnny Gonzales is no easy fight, he's a seasoned vet with a lot of power.
It was just a great left hook that ended the fight. I think if the ref allows himt o continue, then we see a different fight in the later rounds.

Might want to rewatch the Vasquez fight, his corner stopped it right after he got up from a knockdown in a fight he was WAY ahead on the scorecards.
looked like he wanted to quit...looked at his corner with the demoralized bloodied face that said "**** it..."..
corner sensed that jhonny had given up and threw in the towel
even johnny didn't protest AT ALL about the stoppage when his corner threw in the towel...he gave up and his corner could see it on his face...
You make it seem as if he stood no chance against the names you mentioned. He gave a PRIME Vasquez a run for his money, his defense prior to training with Nacho was shaky and so was his chin. He was beating Peñalosa fairly easy and got caught. No, that Nishioka wasn't the same one that fought Donaire because Nishioka went to mexico to get the title, for Donaire on the other hand he went to get a retirement paycheck and not to get hit that much.
EXACTLY. Those 8 defeats really make people downplay my boy Jhonny. Aside from 4 early losses the other 4 came at an elite level. That TKO loss to ponce was very sloppy and over a headbutt. That Vasquez was a fight he did well in and got KTFO, because like many people know and Gonzalez fans are aware of, he is chinny. Also, that Nishioka he fought was at a different level than the version Donaire got. Penalosa caught him, prior to Jhonny was doing well. What people dont understand is that Jhonny has great skill and destructive power, his only downfall is his punch resistance. Once he gets touched he is pretty much going down. Prior to Abner people said he was washed up because he got caught vs a journeyman, again... he is chinny. He also came back and knocked the guy the fucck out. If Jhonny had a granite chin, he would have been unstoppable at 122 to 130 easily.
... and he looked to be in excellent physical condition? Yeah you know more than Jack.
 Not sure where you're coming from with this. Up till then your comment seemed reasonable (though I didn't fully agree). BTW, I was speaking about how fit Mares appeared, which bears a strong correlation with a quicker recovery time. Obviously everybody knows he got his bell rung. At least I know more than Jack. Thanks.
I think you could well be right, Dagomba. I too think it was going to be JG's night. However, neither of us know that for absolute certain, and I wish the ref had patiently finished his full count of ten, at least, before waving the fight off. I'm sure you remember there were only ten seconds left in the round. If AM was responsive, give him a chance. If he makes it out of the round, who knows? He looked to be in excellent physical condition, and we have all been stunned by boxing turnarounds before.
Here's my take, the ref did count to ten, he did it on the first KD which was a HARD knock down. He did the 8 count asked him if he was ok, told him to answer yes, wiped his gloves then asked him to walk forward. After that he gave him a second chance to be responsive, he wasn't. He didn't clinch his instincts took over and he tried swinging and Jhonny knocked him out. AM didn't even remember how the KO played out and he looked to be in excellent physical condition? Yeah you know more than Jack.
Maybe you're more of a casual fan. Jhonny has been around on a world class level for roughly 10 years or so. Although he has decent power, the knock on him has always been that he can be a bit chinny.
Myself personally I don't follow many fighters under 130 unless they are really dynamic fighters.
I doubt Mares would've recouped. I think he was going to keep landing it on a dazed Mares. I don't think Mares was going to shake that punch in the next round.

It's ridiculous to call him a hype job, he was a proven champ. It was almost as ridiculous to have jhonny a 9:1 underdog.
As for the bold, I doubt he would've recoup. Gonzalez landed the same hook previous to the first KD. I think he was going to keep landing it on a dazed Mares, plus he had no legs, you can tell by the way he fell. Anyway, he was going to get KOd eventually. Maybe in a rematch things can be different but that hook pretty much ended the fight, I don't think Mares was going to shake that punch in the next round.
I made a thread about just giving him a 10 count. I'm not saying you're wrong, I just think he deserves a 10 count. I rewatched the fight and stoppage, and Mares would have gotten up if the ref didn't physically force him down and count him out.
I agree with part of that but it doesn't make a difference if you cant fight.
I think it does. You may call me old fashioned but boxing isn't street fighting, it isn't war. It's a sport, and we should be gentlemen and have good sportsmanship after its over.
I'm all for the talk before, and hyping up the fight..but once it's done, show some class. Like Paulie did after he lost and Broner still wanted to be a d.ick.
Again, it's not a fight to the death, it's just boxing.
