Saturday I attended a small amateur boxing tournament in Orlando, Florida...halfway through the card they have a novice female bout (girl from Florida was competing in her fourth bout ever) and her cornerman is a young guy (youngest coach there) who has long hair and is wearing a "St. Pete Boxing Gym" tee-shirt...and Im standing there wondering how many people in the crowd of about 150 people realize that girls coach is current welterweight champ Keith Thurman?
Ah, you should have told me you were heading out there, Ice. I dropped by the OSC to meet up with a trainer from St. Cloud on Saturday. Next time, though...
Ill be at the pro show on Saturday in Orlando...

Wow this is awesome! I haven't been anywhere yet for tournaments. Mostly local, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana. I want to see big time pros at shows.! I only see like mediocre pros, I did spar a guy who fought Mayweather, is was Floyds 2nd fight. Keith is good, he's grown on me I didn't like him but damn he's pretty good. Good to see he stays involved with his roots.
What gym are u out of? I was the guy in the ring after each fight (most of the fights) handing the belt to the winner and the medal to the runner up...
I will tell you in a PM since I don't want to give out info on here.
I was with the HW where the ref stopped the fight after he got hit in the back of the head. My guy gave him 2 standing 8 counts and broke the dudes nose and the fight got stopped from a rabbit punch to the back of the head. Total BS.first loss for him.
Cool deal...yeah Edvan is a solid guy. He just loves to box. win or lose hes always there to give it his all.
Yea, he's been going through some rough times right now. I took him to Rubio's gym in Miami and he got beat up pretty bad by Angelo Santana.

Live in Hudson. Like five minutes from the Pasco-Hernando border. Born in Rhode Island, but I've spent my whole life in Tampa Bay.
Nice... I didn't know. Clearwater here. Cool ass town man. I wasnt feeling it when I first moved there but now I appreciate it more. Used to stay in New Port Richey before.

That's how I met Thurman the first time in Deerfield Beach. We ended up going out to get lunch and talked about boxing for a few hours. Really nice guy and btw I was there this weekend with two of my fighters.

Wow, how did I not know he is from Clearwater? Cool, gives me a somewhat hometown fighter to root for again.

Keith is still training in St. Pete...
He does? I could've sworn someone said he didn't anymore. That's great. I gotta find a way to check him out in the gym some time.

i remember him when our team went up to Tampa. One of our guys Edvan Barros fought him. He went the distance with Edvan. Won of course but went 8 with a tough ass dude. He was just another person like everyone else back then ....an up comer. glad to see him making waves though. Good for him
I was training Edvan for a while as well. He's a really nice guy and good fighter. He also fought Soto Karrass.
I posted a pic of me and him in the training and nutrition section a long time ago, Keith Thurman that is.
Keith Thurman is easily turning into the most well-rounded boxer right now, he's a big threat to anyone's favorite boxer and if you haven't recognized it yet.. you're a hater!!

on a date ??? gay LOL but all joking aside, Thurman seems an ok guy but I just don't see him reaching the upper levels of the sport. I hope I'm wrong but from what I've seen of him lately, he is starting to believe his own hype about the power. WW is a very top heavy division, guys like Manny, Floy, JMM and Bradley would all beat him, with the only tough match up probably being Bradley.
Thurman does have a shot at the second tier though, Khan, Broner, Maidana, Brook and possibly Matthysse/Garcia when one of them moves up!

Someone said they coached with Thurman before. I think it was Cauhtemoc?
Cool stuff man. Too bad I don't think he trains out of St Pete/Clearwater anymore. I wouldve loved to drop by the gym and see him when I went back home.

cuaht trains in florida. it wouldn't surprise me at all if he's familiar with one time, and birmingham, as well as one of my favorite fighters / technicians, winky wright.
