This seems like a popular fantasy match and won't happen until Rigondeaux breaks away from Bob Arum.
We all know Rigondeaux is a masterclass boxing technician. He is a supremely gifted counter puncher...That being said I don't think waiting around or trying to box Rigondeaux is the way to beat him. There is no technical boxer in the world that is better than Rigondeaux...yes not even Floyd Mayweather.
However, I do think the best chance of beating Rigondeaux is to pressure him and hit him anywhere you can. When I say pressure I mean you got to be on his chest and not give him space. Rigo has a great half back step left counter so that's something Santa Cruz has to watch out for. The reason I really like Santa Cruz as a fighter is because I like his punch placement and I feel like he isn't a "mindless" pressure fighter. There's a method to his madness and he using his gloves to block and pick off the punches.
I think it does him a disservice by calling him a baby Margarito because to me, he is nothing like Margarito except being Mexican.
Anyways who do you guys got in this "fantasy" matchup? I got Rigondeaux as of now but I am definitely intrigued.
Has anyone ever hit Santa Cruz hard?
I just don't see how Rigo let's a pressure fighter get him. It might be tough, but Rigo's precision, laser counter shots would do fine. If he didn't get KO'd by Donaire, he wont' by Leo, who has to hit him over and over.
And guess who is really good at avoiding being hit over and over? El Chacal.
Rigo would beat Santa Cruz. I like Leo, but he wouldn't be able to throw as many punches as he does against Rigo. The Cuban is just a master of counter attacks and he would feast on Santa Cruz missed punches. Rigo is like Mayweather in the sense that you can't just go out and throw punches all over the place or you'll be knocked out. He just forces his opponent to throw a lot less than he's used to and then he just beats them by being extremely accurate.
Like what Ali had said after Foreman's battle , I will never put Rigondeaux in the underdog position again till he retires " actually I have never done xD "
Fighting Rigo is to calibrate your skill , not to win
If Rigo could land to the body he could win. Cruz has a tight guard with his gloves always up. And he varies his shots and is smart in the way he picks his shots. Terazzas was only truly landing with the uppercut, the rest of his shots were either blocked or partially blocked. I was telling Victor to try the body it was open, but he kept trying to hit the head...
One of the first things I noticed in the fight was Cruz does have power. He is sharp and crisp, and a buzzsaw at that. To say Rigo is way more powerful than Leo may be off base.
I think if Leo isn't broken down to the body, he could corner and overwhelm rigo. Donaire is a natural counterpuncher... leo is a natural pressure fighter. Two different sacks of potatoes there.
dude I've watched plenty of cruz..........no way in hell does he stand a single chance against rigo. rigo would knock cruz smooth out (just telling it like it is) i told everyone about mares but very few took notice & they were saying the exact same thing about mares "mares could overwhelm rigo"
look, rigo throws such hard crisp powerful punches that he FORCES you to respect him.........& then you find yourself not letting your hands go and getting picked apart. cruz has less of a chance of beating rigo then mares. mares at least knew how to box a little with his pressure......i just see cruz getting knocked out. (with rigo body shots or no rigo body shots) i picked rigo over mares by ud. but against cruz i got him by flat out ko............theres no doubt in my mind that he would stop cruz. cruz is too slow, brings his hands down after the 4th round, gets sloppy after 5 rounds and literally has to rely on his work rate to pull the UD..............(this is cruz in a nutshell)
on to power.......
cruz is a guy with decent pop who throws a lot. rigo is a raw power puncher. the power isn't comparable.......if cruz goes in there thinking he's the power puncher he's gonna get rocked hurt & laid out even sooner then expected.
Rigo does a good job of using his right hand to turn his opponents and get them out of position. I can see Santa Cruz tumbling across the ring and falling through the ropes all night.
Leo's to big for this weight class, he's like a 5th grader picking on 2nd graders. I still think Rigo can hurt him to the body, make his hands drop and KO him.
Dude is freaking huge for 122. He was standing next to De La Hoya after the fight and was not that much shorter than him. Dude looks like he could fight at 135. Rigo would beat him because he would make him pay for trying to get on the inside. People still sleep on Rigo's power. Ask nonito he will tell you about it, LOL
people are forgetting that not only is rigo a better technical fighter, but he has much more power then cruz could ever dream of..........
because of rigos technical skills we sometimes forget about his power. rigos power is FAR greater then santa cruz.........he would put a all out beating on cruz.
cruz wouldn't even have a chance against donaire................

Obvious landslide..... and he said he was moving up asap after 2 fights and i doubt anybody on his camp wants to match a hot young guy like that against the bandwagon destroyer.

Even though I'm a Rigondeaux hater, I think Rigondeaux wins an easy UD.
LSC fights like a mini version of Margarito. He would get countered all night IMO. It's either Rigondeaux by UD or LSC by KO, just because he would KO Guillermo if he landed a clean headshot.
Not saying you're wrong about the prediction, but Santa Cruz is better than Margarito. He fights much smarter and more technically proficient.
