last night's mares knockdowns kind of reminded me of marquez in that first pac fight, that could have easily been stopped on that last knockdown by some refs.
Definitely, mares looked more hurt that marquez did, but who knows? I did feel it was a quick stoppage last night, he was hurt bad but the count was only at 3 and he was the champ so...but, as mares even said, the ref is there to protect the fighters so I do respect that decision too.
Not sure,,,
I thought mares could have gotten up, but i dont complain because its moments like that is what ruins fighters,,,
Mares got rocked and was down, got up, got rocked again and was down,,, ref stopped it,,,
Mares' brain probably had some swelling and bruising but the fight was over so he doesnt take any shots while brain is bruised and swelled,,,
On the other hand, if mares continues, he is probably saved by the round,, his brain is swollen and bruised but the fight continues and he would take some more shots to an already bruised and swollen brain,,, that is where guys get the slurred speech and other mental problems,,
Mares could have probably continued but am glad the ref did what he did, because it probably saved mares career,, otherwise he would have become a shot fighter like dawson after ward, vargas after tito, berto after ortiz, etc,,,, In all those cases a guy was rocked early but the fight continued on with the guy having a swollen and bruised brain,,, Anytime a guy goes thru that, they are never the same afterwards and can have major neurological problems later, as seen by toney, dawson and berto's speech
You can't assume every boxer who was dropped hard or multiple times has brain swelling. if the boxer tries to get up the ref should continue the count and assess if the boxer is fit to continue..see the Khan-Garcia fight.
I can see the argument behind holding a full 10 count, but sometimes its best to stop the fight. One or two more blows to the head can have lasting effects. Drop one fight and keep your health in tact to come back is the best option.
The fighter wanted to continue, and the ref leaned over him giving mares no run to get up. The count means a lot , and tells us more and we get to see if mares can go all while being safe at the moment
ref should of kept counting till at least to the 8th count, see how he gets up
Marquez was given an 8th count vs Pacquiao in there first fight n Marquez laid back on the floor with his face covered but Cortez didnt care he just kept counting to see what happen n that was his 3rd knockdown, he still earned a draw but many thought he won like myself
it wasnt a very bad stoppage, the Mares vs PDL stoppage was way worst than this
