Ok, let's get this sorted, I'm hearing some saying last night was an early stoppage in the Mares/Gonzalez main event. What do you guys think? Time for a poll.
In my opinion it was an early stoppage, Mares was the champion, in a championship fight of such magnitude, you have to let it go on, imagine if the ref had stopped the fight after the first 3 KDs in Pac/JMM 1 or after Barker looked like he was finished against Geale, in fact Barker looked in worse shape after that KD than Mares in both his KDs.
The moment the ref placed his hand on Mares' shoulder, you could tell Mares was shocked, meaning he knew where he was, what had happened and what it all meant, Mares was ok. Yes he was hurt but there were less than 10 secs left in the round, Mares would have had a minute to recover and we've all seen Mares can recover. The ref was, in all honesty, quite **** last night, I reckon he'd be scared of his own shadow.
Having said that, massive congrats to Gonzalez, a solid, long serving pro who doesn't quite get the recognition he should. I always knew it was going to be a war but I expected Mares to stop Gonzalez late but the vet came out bombing. With the BS ref stoppage, there needs to be a rematch.
easily one of the worst, most incoherent posts I've ever tried reading, stopped when you said Roy was back up LOL
Really can care less, even though you more than likely read the entire post. RJJ was up before the count even reached 10, the ref waived the fight off between 7-8 count. That's a fact all you have to do is go to YouTube. The point is RJJ was broken just as Mares, so if you think I'm making an argument for RJJ's fight getting stopped to early, wrong it was a perfect stoppage. I was just merely making a point on how stupid it was to think Mares fight was stopped to early. Incoherent, becasue your a confused so called boxing fan. That's the reason you cannot relate with the post, which has a lot do with the threads question. I stated, that I thought the fight was not stopped early, and gave my reasoning with actual facts and possible scenarios what might and could possibly happened to Mares. Lol and you think the fight was stopped to early, Mares Damn near tore his acl, pcl, mcl and Achilles all @ once, with his eyes crossed too all on the 2nd knock down. But yet the fight was stopped to early:nono:
If you guys feel Mares should of been given the benefit of the doubt. Other fighters that were champion's should of too. Example Dawson vs Stevenson, Dawson was dropped once, and got up on the count of 6, I believe. It was a good stoppage for Dawson considering the fact he took a mental and physical beating from Ward, as well as mental beating from BHop even though Dawson clearly beat BHop. RJJ vs Tarver 2, RJJ got up early in the count too. But RJJ also took more punishment than ever in his 1st fight vs Tarver, even though I had RJJ winning 116-1112 in their first fight. Vlad vs Brewster 1, lennox vs McCall just to name a few. Point is Mares was hurt bad, letting him continue only would of took more damage off the young man career, and he would of never been the same. Example look @ Kahn fight should of been stopped vs Maidana, khan also took punishment vs Peterson. Than took too many punches vs Garcia, I wouldn't be shocked if Alexander vs Khan would be easy for Alexander and a possible KO for Alexander. Khan has not looked good since Garcia. The fighters he fought are not on the level as Alexander no matter how you spin it and discredit Alexander. Look @ JTaylor vs Pavlik, I believe smoger was the ref, and when JTaylor was hurt by Pavlik's 1st right hand he was done for, but yet the ref let him take 6-8 punches before he ended the fight. Point is Taylor was never the same. Now if you look @ the replay from last night on the second knock down Mares took 6-7 flush power punches as he was going down, his eyes were crossed not even including the punch that hurt Mares. I keep reading post about the fight was stopped early, but than the posters say stuff like " Mares would of been KO eventually". Those statements are the reason it was a Good stoppage:boxing:

Refs and judges need to be schooled again
Refs let you clinch , some break it right away and some let you fight out of it.
Like refs and judges have styles
Let these fighters stand and count to 8. And let them
Take a few steps toward you and determine
from these comments it seems that I am the only one that notices that if mares was down at 2:50 and an eight count would take it to 2:58. that will leave Gonzales to walk from the opposite corner and deliver a the KO. As a ref you should be aware of the time remaining in the round, especially a Championship bout. Either Gonzales delivers a falcon punch from the opposite corner, or the round ends and Mares gets 1 min recoup time. No brainer, fight stopped early.
Agreed on both accounts, I was starting to think I was the only guy here who had any brains left lol
Given the circumstances, the ref stopped it to early. The round was almost over, had Mares been issued the 10 count, the bell would have rung allowing Mares to try and recoup between rounds.
I am not a fan of either fighter, just a boxing fan.
Boxer cannot be saved by the bell! To think posters call themselves fans of boxing, but yet don't know the "Basic Rules":boxing:

I was hoping that the ref wouldn't stop it, but he did. I'm kinda tired of fighters not being given a full count. Mares could've made it out the round and regrouped had he just been given the chance.

i thought it was an early stoppage, at least see if he gets up, but not a terrible or bad stoppage
but it doesnt matter Gonzalez would of still stop him
he was knockout but Mares has a lot of heart
Why is there even a discussion on whether or not it was stopped early? By the looks of things the ref could have stopped it after the first KD. He had to tell at Mares to put his hands up. This is starting to look like the "lucky punch" argument. Plenty of fights were stopped way too early but this isn't one of them.
If I was Mares I would be happy with the early stoppage, even if he could have won it would be an uphill battle from that point on, he'd end up taking damage that would ultimately shorten his career. Seeing as it was not a career defining fight, that course of action would have been pointless.
I didn't see Mares complain about the stoppage, he was very professional taking the loss which made me become a fan.......I hope he comes back stronger
that he comes back? count on that.
that he's stronger when he comes back? don't count on that.

no i don't think so....mares was dropped hard and hurt by the first knockdown alone..and the second sealed it...maybe if mares did get up he would have been dropped hard again and sustained more unnecessary damage.
I have never seen Marquez look that out of it. Mares looks like he was on a different planet. Body language says it all, that dude was done no questions asked, adios.
I was thinking the same thing when I read that comment. JMM has been of his feet but he did not look hurt at all vs Pacquiao.
