Crazy how Mares had tough fight, after tough fight and always came through. In not sure why or how this was supposed to be an easy fight. Showtime made some comments about marinating the meat for too long, blah, blah, blah....
How can anyone claim Mares was being marinated? How?? The guy fought nothing but tough/hard fights back to back!
Anyways...back to the topic.
What do y'all say? Will Mares bounce back and come back stronger? Or, will he be mentally ruined after his first devastating KO loss?
You can not count a fighter out after 1 loss like that I understand it was a tough loss but it all depends on the fighter on how they come back and I think Mares with his dedication and discipline will still be a great fighter.
I don't think Mares is done. I think he undervalued his opponent and former trainer. Sometimes a loss like this makes fighters much, much better and I think Abner Mares has the talent to bounce back from this defeat.
It's not like he's been at featherweight for a long time. He tried moving up, he failed, he can move back down.
Johnny looked huge. My chick was like, "why is that midget fighting that big guy?" Then after the first big left hook..."I could have told you that was gonna happen!"
Fucking bitch! I fucked her like I was trying to fuck through her!:lol1:
I liked how Abner told his daughters he was Ok and that he'd take them on a little trip when he gets back and he loves them. He seemed bothered but in somewhat good spirits.
I just hope the loss didn't damage him psychologically. We won't know till he gets back in there.
After the way Mares handled that post fight interview with composure and professionalism, not only has he gained a fan in me, but I have every right to believe that he'll bounce back stronger. That's the kind of attitude needed in this sport.
He should go down to 122 pounds. Not everyone needs to be like pacquiao and weight jump.He seems undersized at 126.
gonzalez was too big for him. i knew from the get go hes gonna get steam rolled.
Absolutely not. He wasn't dominated and he just got caught with a clean punch. I don't think this is like the same punch Pacquiao got knocked out with...didn't seem as devastating to make me question if he'll be the same.
I'm positive that he'll be back and would make him a huge favorite vs Gonzalez again. Only think that can stop mares is if he goes all Hollywood like victor Ortiz
He needs to go back to basics and dont let GBP pressure him into being reckless and sacrifice himself to be fan friendly allll the ****ing time idc who you are there are opponents you cant be Mr fun punching bag with it gets you KTFO.
a loss doesnt mean a boxers career is over. posters like you piss me off.
This^^^ it irritates the hell out of me that "ruined" "damaged goods" is always tossed around after someone loses...those terms get tossed around waaaay too much here. If you're undefeated then you're overrated or hype...if you fight a couple tough fights & lose then you're damaged goods...it's really impossible to win with a lot of posters on here.
it'd be something if u could tell he's done or gonzalez has got his number based on this single round...
thing is, we saw what gonzalez could do to mares but we didn't get the chance to see if mares would eventually be able to outbox or hurt gonzalez himself
it was a feeling out round up until gonzalez hurt him with that looping hook
Mares is what he is.
A basic fighter skill wise with a lions heart. His flaws are what make his fights exciting but as you can see, it cost him this fight.
He deserved pound for pound recognition because of his body of work but isn't a pound for pound talent wise.
He'll be back though. You got some good fights that can be made with Russell and Santa Cruz.
He should take a year off, fight Castellanos or somebody then get Russell or Santa at the end of the year.
He'll be fine. He's a damn good fighter who finally bit off more than he can chew. Hopefully this tells him he should move back down, he's too small for featherweight.
that is not how it works.
done?
nah
ruined?
nah
are his best days behind him? probably. don't expect him back on the p4p list.
he's been in war after war. now he's been stopped. he's a 27 year old former bantamweight. he's only getting older and fighting bigger guys, with an aggressive style.
Mares will bounce back. I don't think he should do a rematch though. Not because I don't think Mares could win. But if he loses again in the same fashion, that will set him back even more. I always thought Mares gets hit too easy. I thought De Leon would be the one to give him his first L but he handled himself well. Still thought the fight was stopped too early but Mares was well on his way to winning.
