he consistently was calling out Donaire and was in Bantamweight tournament while Donaire was fighting has beens like Arce and Nishioka.
Mares fought the better oppositions Donaire fought bigger names past their prime so in my book Mares resume is more impressive
Exactly. More important than whom is when.
It wasn't that clear at the time. Anselmo Moreno alone was better than most Donaire opponents apart from Darchinyan.
Moreno hadn't even fought at 122, he spent his career at 118 where he was a good champion but one struggling with fighters Donaire had dominated.
He was a good champion but looking back he was probably a touch overrated at the time and had no pop at all above 118.

Hope you aint implying nonito ducking mares ...they both wanted that fight but we know now (not at that time)who never wanted to work with bobby, schaeffer...
Nishioka was ranked #1 just behind rigo when nonito fought him ..mares has not even fought the top 3 of "any" division...i think ponce de leon is best win considering abner is a small guy for fw...nonito still has 112 and 115 over mares...this comparison is not close...

Lol, noit aint, mares beat him at 122 in which moreno has done nothing.
Never in mares's career has he fought the best in the division ...not a118, 122, or 126...still he fought best competition available tho....

What, really? Donaire, clearly by some distance.
Even before Rigondeaux, Vetyeka & Walters it was still clearly Donaire.

I voted for Mares, he was on the same kinda streak Froch was on, just fighting tough competition after another until he got blitz by Gonzalez.

good bump. wow, this is as close as any poll i've seen on NSB, and no clear cut answer either. Both guys made careers fighting two/three fights at a weight class before jumping up rather than a period of sustained dominance at a class. I think Donaire's KO over prime flyweight Darchinyan ranks as the best victory on either man's record and had the more conclusive dominant victories of the two fighters;Mares's fights with Agbeko (the first one) Perez + Darchinyan were somewhat inconclusive and controversial. Donaire's win over Montiel who was coming off a win against Hasegawa is a pretty solid victory also, he was definitely a p4p top five fighter, whereas Mares probably peaked at #6 or 7.
At the time I posted this thread it was a little closer. Mares was on fire and hadn't been KO'd by Jhonny Gonzalez yet.
He was off for almost a year after that and his career has really slowed down since then.
Does not matter when you made this thread coz honestly nonitos resume ****s on mares's at anytime....hell, mares's wins at 118 consists of lower ranked fighters with one that was not even decisive....and thats his best division so far..

Just thought it would be interesting to revisit now that they've both tested the waters at 126 against legit opposition, but importantly, fighters that are their size or bigger.
I'm a huge Mares fan but even I know Donaire's resume is much deeper and accomplished than Abner's right now.
Agbeko x2, Vic, and PDL were good wins but his best win was Chemito Moreno… the only thing that screws up that win is the fact that it happened at the wrong weight class at the time. Moreno had to go up to 122 and following his loss to Mares he moved back down to 118 were he continued to reign supreme until his most recent dethroning.
Of course you pick Donaire. Youre the biggest racist living up to the "all chinos stick together" type. How dare you even accuse anyone else...
Settle it like this. **** all this other paper **** youre so infatuated with. Who is a badder group...

Thats all you need yo know about who is laughable. Rule of thumb, if theyre a pac stan they probably dont know wtf theyre arguing about.sad your vote counts as much as mine really.
so i'm a racist because i'm pointing out facts? lmao....
isn't it a fact that donaire has fought and beaten more current/former/future world champs? isn't it a fact that donaire has been unified champ twice in two divisions whereas mares has never unified titles?? isn't it a fact that mares got stopped in the first round by a past prime, shopworn, huge underdog fighter whereas donaire has never been dropped or close to being stopped?
