Prime?
Shot?
or somewhere in between?
and for how long now?
Mosley - "oh mosley was out somewhere around 18 months before the floyd fight so he was shot" although that same mosely had probably The most impressive win of his career when he k.o'd Margo. Not to mention Freddie Roach didnt want pac no where near a ring if mosley was in the other corner at the time not even at a CW. Mosley was #3 p4p and #1 or 2 in ww when floyd beat him up. But he was oldsley then? Hasnt done much since. He was 37 or 38 i believe.
Cotto - "Cotto was shot since Margo became his daddy". True, Margo probably shortened Cottos career even more so if he indeed cheated. The Pac fight hurt as well (not to mention Cotto lost his father somewhere around there. No trainer against the pac and roach combo? shiddd lost cause right there). But He went to 154 and had a string of k.o's the most notably came in the form of the man he felt cheated him, Margo. This is arguably Cottos most impressive win. Redemption. Then fought a 35yr old floyd and lost but made a good account of himself vs a bigger trout. Cotto was 31
Pac- "Pac was just ktfo he's done and been slippin". Well pac was on the receiving end of one of the most devastating k.o's to a fighter of his caliber in a while. He also lost to tim bradley before that. That said it took Marquez 4 tries to do it and Pac was arguably winning the fight before it occurred. And while tim got the W, Most people believe pac beat the undefeated bradely decisively. Dapidran was 33
Floyd - ok two things for floyd. " Canelo is too green, not enough skill, Cw cherrypick" but before the fight was signed it was "Canelo is too big, skilled for a 36yr floyd, Coward floydie will never take the fight". Which is why im asking the question. Floyd was out almost 2yrs came back and beat the #2 p4p guy in sept and then beat the #3 p4p guy in may in back to back fights. Another 16 months gone and he beat the #2 ww in the world, then the #1 154 lb in the world. Went to jail then beat the mandatory 4 division champion in Guerrero. Now he's fighting the top guy at 154 again and is currently the #1 fighter in the world....He is 36
So is he still prime? is it because of the lay offs, are they helping him rest or take roids or whatever (didnt help mosley apparently). Is he shot but still better than (according to BScene) everybody from 140 to 154? Is he shot but just hasnt met the same fate as the others? Are we jumping the gun? Is he a robot or some ish? Does he age like hopkins and its just all in the genes? or is he somewhere in between? What would you say his condition is NOW before he faces canelo?

Still prime. Has he lost a little? Sure. But it's not like anyone was on his heels per se, he is still a good leap above the rest of the competition, until proven otherwise. Not only is he undefeated, few have come close.
I think people really forget what Floyd looked like in 2001 against Corrales, 2005 against Gatti, or even in 2006-2007 against Judah and Hatton. He was much more fluid with his movement and quicker.
He's still real good now, but not prime or just out of it. Just barely out of his prime was 2009-2010 against Marquez and Mosley. He's dropped slightly since then if you ask me, still real good though.
You can see the stages of his career here clearly.
His peak, early 2000's
His late prime, mid 2000's
Past prime-still good, barely out of prime
Current Mayweather, past prime-still good, slightly down since 09-10
Defensively he was at his best since the Marquez fight against Guerrero, his movement and fluidity looked jittery at times though.
he dug a valley when mosley rung his bell the first time and damn near dug to China when Mosley caught him again. What was so sic about that is the fact that he took over the fight before the round had even ended
^^^THIS x10...most will dwell on the age of Mosley instead of how Floyd responded. When you get hit like that, you're true colors show...in that moment, you don't think "damn this guy is kinda old"...you either go down, go down & get back up ffighting or running...he fought just he did the couple other times he's been hurt.
Good post
I think Mayweather is still in his prime. I mean look at his past performances. When was the last time he was in a close fight that he had to dig deep to win?

In my opinion, he's still very much in his prime. He's still got the physical attributes to stay at the top and he's learning more and more with each passing fight, which means his mental game is obviously at the highest level. Just because he drops some rounds these days doesn't mean he's nearly shot or even anywhere close to it.
running around the ring like a ballerina makes you enjoy a longer prime time compared to the so called real boxers/fighters.
I really want to know who he ran from? I watch his last 5 or 6 fights consistently & don't see any running. I'm expecting a real response.
A little past it but not that much. Past it enough for me not to really want to see him fighting guys that should be at 160. You can clearly see that not only age but the weight (147 & 154) has had an affect on him...I think 140 would have been his best weight class.
Yeah floyd looked good, but the most memorable moment in the fight was the mid rounds when cotto was moving around, jabbing floyd, and was drawing blood,,, Floyd dug deep, kicked it up a gear and almost stopped cotto in the latter rounds,,,,
I'll give you that but I still think Mayweather is in his prime.
I agree that Cotto fought well and showed tremendous heart but IMO, Floyd still looked very good in that win and the fight wasn't that close. I was rooting for Cotto big time too and initially I thought it was a close fight but after I watched it a second and third time (without my Cotto goggles on), I realized Floyd won a 8-4 type fight in which he could have possibly stopped Cotto had he really pressed the issue.

I thought he had to dig deep to defeat cotto,,, Cotto came to win and fought great,, but floyd dug deep and was better, and showed his greatness

He is far from his physical prime but with the help of his boxing skill and IQ and lack of punishment taken he is able to perform at an elite level. His combination speed has drastically decreased since his prime but he remains faster than most.
i dont think he is shot either. I do think his prime ended a few yrs ago. Although it can be hard to tell sometimes the way he makes people look in there. I gauge him off his ww fights more so bc i know he doesnt look his best at 154. But at ww he makes it look really easy. I cant put my finger on it but i can tell he isnt say mayweather at 140 you know? or even the mayweather that fought judah
There's 5 stages to someone's boxing career, if they see it all the way through. Take Ali for example.
1960-1963: Pre-Prime, young fighter.
1964-1967: Prime (could have lasted at least 2-3 years longer but the layoff cut it short)
1970-1975: Past prime-still good fighter
1976-1978: Past prime, on the way out, falling off big time.
1980-1981: Completely and utterly shot
Mayweather is past prime-still good, has been since 09'. He's kind of where Ali was in 73' or so for me. He probably has another 2 years before he falls off drastically.
For Mayweather, here's how I personally view his career.
1996-2000: Pre prime, young fighter (damn was he still good in 1998 already at 21.
2001-2007: Prime, early 00's his absolute prime, late 00's his latter prime.
2009-present: Past prime-still good.
I think if he fights past 2015, you'll see some major slippage for him.
