Mayweather has fought nothing but past, future of current fighters since 2005. He will be fighting for a 4th lineal title at 154 which will be 4/5 lineal titles out of weights he has won titles at.
Also since facing Henry Brusles he has defeated 11 world champions in a row...no NABF, or WBO but fighters who won lineal titles or the IBF,WBA, or WBC...I cant think of a fighter who has done this.
If Mayweather gets by Canelo september 14 that will be 12 in a row, 4 lineal titles, and just 44 fights he will have beaten 18 world champions. Also half his wins are title fight wins. Sure he didnt fight Margarito, Paul Williams, or Manny. But what he has done in 44 fights a lot of fighters who are more respected didnt do in 80 or a hundred fights....i.e. beloved fighters like J.C.Chavez, Arguello,ETC.
No matter how you slice it if he retires undefeated I have no problem with him being considered a top ten ATG their isnt much else he can accomplish that he hasnt already
I get what you are saying and that's why its all about names and not "champion" status. Its equally lame to call Floyd's opponents champions because that masks the skill and age of many of them.
If Lucas wins people will go crazy because Lucas is already viewed by many as being better than Danny and a win will prove that... not because he beat a "world champion."
When Floyd fought a ton of fights, they were crapped on by people, especially here. But if ANYONE else in the world around that weight fought the exact same fight, it's considered a good fight.
Margarito and Pacquiao are the only fights that didn't or haven't happened that should have. Paul Williams got his first good win summer of 07' against Margarito, Floyd fought Ricky Hatton, which people had wanted to see for awhile by then. Williams proceeded to lose to Carlos Quintana, than avenged the loss later on in 2008, than moved to 154. This notion that the whole world was waiting on seeing Mayweather-Williams is absurd. Would it have been a good fight in Late 2007, yes. No doubt. But was Floyd at fault for fighting Hatton, who was undefeated as well and Top 10 P4P, not at all.
And with Pacquiao, I still think the fight happens before it's all said and done. We'll see. I wanted to see Floyd fight Margarito in 2006, but it was crap that he said he'd fight Margarito for sure, if Arum could get him fights against Cotto, Hatton, and Oscar. Arum said no, so it didn't happen. That's not a good excuse though. Still, Floyd beat up on Mosley after Mosley stopped Margarito.
So in the end, I don't know what beating Margarito would have really added to his resume, but it should have happened.
The term "world champion" doesnt mean what it used to mean. Resume's are defined by who you fought and when you fought them.
Robert Guerrero was not a world champion, nor was Ortiz, Baldomir, etc.
Than who is? Is Danny Garcia considered a world champion? Who has he beat? But if Matthysse wins this board is going to shut down for a weak. I don't want to sound like a Floyd apologist here but I don't understand peoples reasoning sometimes. We treat people so different on this site. What 1 person has done isn't good enough while praising others for the same accomplishment's. There is no consistency at all.
