I mean, he was past his prime when he fought floyd right? Although he was champion...he wins 3 rounds against Floyd and he troubled Floyd?lol-wow
He made Floyd's nose bleed with jabs.lol---floyd struggled...gtfoh..
You people have lost your mind on this site....cotto loses to Manny at a cw for an interim title if you ask me....Shane was the true ww champion if you ask me....yes, tony may have cheated to beat cotto but we don't know for sure....I think he did also but who knows....
anyway, cotto is known for fighting for vacated titles...look at his Jr we run and beginning stages of his ww run....
So was cotto in his prime when he fought Manny? Was the fight with clottey not bad? Was the lost to margarito not mind boggling? His 1st lost....you're never the same...cotto is Manny's best win at ww no doubt....but was cotto in his prime in 2007 and 2008 when he beat Shane and lost to margarito? I know, I know....Floyd ducked these years right.....
He didn't fight an unknown Paul Williams...or margarito who lost to Paul Williams, and Shane who turned Floyd down in 1999 by asking for 10 million dollars(read between the limes of this request folks), 2005 and 2006 after he neat Vargas, then wants Floyd in 2007 after Floyd beat his boss, Oscar, and realized how much money there was to be made with Floyd now, but Floyd fights hatton thus showing us that he was in controll of boxing's big fightss at that point.....Oscar' hatton, and Shane turned Floyd down I'm 2004 and 2005.... Now he was on top of the negotiating table due to his record with Oscar....
Shane wasn't a draw in terms of ppv at that point...he fought cotto instead on HBO and lost to him....was this cotoo,s prime folks?
Cotto started boxing pro in 2000, 2001 something like that....and started at 140...Floyd started in 96 and at 130, And agrees to fight cotto and hatton for 10 million each. After he fought margarito in 2006 and arum said no....so Floyd wanted Oscar....arum pissed Floyd off, seeing how bobbo gave Oscar everything and kept Floyd waiting for so many years and Floyd felt like he was being used...arum knew he would beat Marg's ass and wanted to get rid of tony but was mad Floyd wanted Oscar and toprank had bad blood....all that money to be made.....and Bob would be cut out of it....
Think about it people.....Floyd was owed money from the gatti and Judah fights...problems within to prank was the reason for this debiacle. Floyd had legal issues and wanted big paydays....his arrogance and lack of push compared to Oscar caused all of this bad blood between him and arum...
He never ducked margarito, cotto, and other to prank fighters....Bob arum is to blame solely...he never wanted to sacrifise cotto to Floyd until Bob could cash out on cotto and cotto never ever pursued Floyd....he knew, especially after the corley fight that Floyd moving up to 140 wouldn't hurt Floyd weight wise...
The Margarito, Clottey and Pacquiao fights all happened in the span of like a year and a half, and took a lot out of him physically and mentally.
I'd say Judah and Mosley were his last great fights.
The best Cotto you'll ever see fought Alfonso Gomez. A decent, top 10 WW that Cotto absolutely toyed with and dominated. His confidence was sky high and his physical tools were hitting on all cylinders. Was a thing of beauty to watch.
I'm 5000% convinced Margarito used special wraps in his 1st fight vs Cotto. Bleeding knuckles and hardening punches as the fight went on? Dead giveaway.
Bleeding knuckles????
prime until he moved to 154
people put too much stock in loses, cotto was still young when he lost to margarito, it was no worse than pacquiao's loss to morales
or barrera's loss to junior jones
cotto has always had trouble with just about everyone, why most of his fights are so exciting, he gets hit, gets wobbled

In an era where there's more champions than actual contenders, I don't think belts really put Cotto any higher than the overall body of work he's cemented over his career. A win for the Middleweight title for him would be huge, but when all is said and done nobody can deny Cotto fought the best out there more times than not. Solid fighter in our era.in the words of Apollo creed-ding ding....
I agree with this sentiment...I only asked this for this reason...and someone please remind me...did cotto win a vacant title before he fought clottey?
I don't remember...point is, Manny's best win ever IMO, including morales and barerra....cotto was Manny's toughest opponent ever except Jmm...but, the ww champion was shane mosley who Manny turned down...yet, Floyd gets bashed for fighting him in 2010 only after Manny turned Floyd down after beating cotto...we do have so many pointless championship belts in boxing today, but Manny gets so much praise for being 8 time world champion in 8 different weight classes....he could have beaten the undisputed champion in Shane mosley back in 2009...
Floyd beat Shane for his 7th title or 8th but refused to pay sanctioning fees.....no catch weight title wins for Floyd....he's going for his 1st catchweight title win, but it,s really a defense coz Floyd is the real champion, not canelo.....floyd beat the champ, then trout beat the former champ for the same title? Wtf is up with these sanctioning organizations....now we have a regular champion I'm canelo and super champion in Floyd...both WBA...lol...
Well Zab was hurting him til those low blows started.
Some dont think he even beat Shane.
Aannnnddd lets not forget Clottey. Going life and death with a guy who throws no punches is not a good look to some.
Anyway, Cotto always has been like a low tier elite level fighter. Love him and all and that Marg fight did seem to take his youth from him. Since that fight he has zero recuperative ability.
clottey fight after his prime,,,,
and yes zab and shane hurt him, but he was never dropped like he was in his 140 shootouts with torres and corley
Yes you are right, both could bang,,, i just always thought cotto was better at welter,, both judah and shane landed bombs on him and he was never down unlike the torres and corley fights,,,,
I just felt cutting down to 140 weakened his punch resistance,,,,,
but all your points are valid,,, no argument from me

i agree with most of this, though i will vouch for the power of corley and especially torres. chop chop had underrated power with his right hook. hell, he even shook up floyd mayweather. and torres could flat out bang.

Guys and gals alike...what do you feel about cotto's vacated title wins?
And I love cotto, don't get me wrong....everything about this kid boxing wise, where it matter, inside that ring once the bell rings is special to me.....he is a class act and everything good about boxing....i love him to death....i'm a fighter myself but I'm an emotional fan....when cotto fights, he brings out emotions in people who love him and appreciate his heart in that squared circle...and i'm not ashamed to admit and get bashed and made fun of 4 it...he deserves success because he gives us everything he has to entertain us in that ring....and I'm so proud of that kid to overcome so much and bounce back, even in life threatening defeat.... He'll bounce back...he has it in him...besides margarito, no fighter has really disrespected him, well, mayorga excluded.lol
But from Floyd and Manny to Mosley and malanaggi, and all in between, cotto is well liked, loved, admired, and respected....so tearing up for him whether he wins or is defeated is an honor for me because I know the sacrifice and passion that goes into this sport..it's deadly...it really is...fighters have lost their lives trying to please us...crying for them is the least I can do....I know the sacrifice...

Cotto's prime was anything before margs fight,,,
margs ruined him
cotto's peak was 2006-2008
in 04,05 cotto was still getting hit by torres and chop-chops,,, he seemed stronger and better at welter

So this isn't a bash cotto thread....Floyd "higher standards" Mayweather is the reason for this thread....and Manny "light's still out" pacquiao is held to lower standards from you people....
And you know when there's too many PAC fans on here when you see a whole page of threads talking about how there's too many flowmo's on here defending Floyd.lol.
Damm, now you add a w to flo mo so it won't be used as a bad word.lol..man, the irony....it's used that much by people on here...

Cotto's peak years were 2006-2008. He wasn't bad at all afterwards, but the Margarito fight put a big dent into his career and overall how he fought from them on.
Not a 2nd prime version of himself, but compare him with when manny and Floyd fought him....and the years Floyd "ducked" him, which is no years so it should be easy for you cowgirl...
Oh, and 4 those who don't know.....I type in essays and have been doing so since I joined this forum almost 7 years ago....
I'm an essay....but I'm African American. Lol. Just a little essay humor...lol.
