Roy would have been better off staying at heavy and fighting old holyfield and tyson,,
both of those were huge blockbuster fights,,,, 20mil+ paydays for him,, never understood that,,,
much better to get ko'd by holy or tyson then tarver and johnson,,,, looks better on resume and more cash,,,,True indeed. Was Roy implicated in the Balco scandal?
Montell Griffin.
The way Montell angered Roy by mouthing off to him Ali-style, and then went to his knee while baiting Roy to hit him in order to secure the DQ victory over a 28 year old Jones. Genius!
Roy could have been Mason Dixon in "Rocky Balboa" if not for that loss.
Instead we got Tarver playing possibly the least convincing heavyweight champion in film history.
The BALCO scandal broke shortly after his fight with Ruiz
Yes your right,, he probably had to get clean,, to keep his image,,
but damn he left alot of money on the table.....

Tarver...first he asked Roy did he have any excuses then he iced him some 4 or 5 minutes later....man I couldn't stand Tarver for a while after that....but I got over it!! :lol1:
The first Tarver fight Jones was Jones until round 7. His skills eroded from then on. The toll he took on his body took something from him. The second fight saw a Jones who didn't move his head or feint and looked like a guy who didn't know how to fight a southpaw. More like a guy trying to conserve energy. He physically declined no matter if he won round 1.
1. Did Lou Del Valle drop Roy with a similar shot in his prime?
2. Does Antonio Tarver punch a lot harder than Del Valle?
3. Could Tarver have landed the same shot against the version Del Valle fought?
4. Would Roy from the Del Valle fight have been knocked out from the punch?
(The answers here are all "yes" btw)
i cannot understand why roy did this to himself losing 25 pounds of pure muscle killed his body, the people in his camp that let him need shooting. Roy should have gone to cruiserweight got a title unified the belts then called it a day
Everyone was shocked when Tarver stopped him but because of the yoyo-ing up and down in weight it was understandable.
To me the Glen Johnson KO was equally as shocking. That's when you knew that he wasn't ever going to be Superman again.
Glen Johnsons didn't shock me nearly as much. After the first two Tarver fights, we really didn't need to see more.
We may see the same thing with Pac-Rios.
The weight loss at his age. He should've stayed at heavy, got knocked out by Lennox even though I thought that he could outbox Lennox by hittting and running and retired.
Sure....the weight loss.
If he went up and down in weight when he was younger, that's one thing, but at age 35, that is another. Tarver exposed Jones for not using his jab. You can only move around for so long before you get tagged without using a jab.
Imho, Jones was just caught in a division where he was naturally too small for those guys once he settled. He got by those big lhw's by using his speed, reflexes and superior skills. Once his conditioning was gone, his confidence slipped, and he was done.
The Johnson fight showed that Roy would never reach peek condition again against any skilled, aggressive fighter.
Everyone was shocked when Tarver stopped him but because of the yoyo-ing up and down in weight it was understandable.

I wonder what caused such a sharp physical declineThe weight loss at his age. He should've stayed at heavy, got knocked out by Lennox even though I thought that he could outbox Lennox by hittting and running and retired.

obviously you've never even watched the damn fight, if johnson was anyone else with a lesser chin he'd have been sparked by roy or made to quickly gain some respect for roy or get sparked
johnson took roy's soul
in tarver iii it's where he didn't fight back, threw no punches, just showboated, and even then a mentally defeated roy seemed like if he just let his punches go he could beat tarverYou sound stupid telling someone that they never watched a fight. Stop guessing.
Jones was done ok. I don't care what you have to say about this topic dun. Jones was done after the first Tarver fight. That's how it happens, that quick.
Jones was 35 years old moving from 175 to maybe 192 lbs-pure muscle, and then back down to 175lbs. He had to lose that and fight a very tough Tarver. We all talked about how Jones looked lethargic from round 7 on.
The first fight showed you what Roy lost. He could not keep up the heat that he usually does for 12 rounds. Against Johnson, Roy probably won 1 round.
