You can't learn advanced defensive techniques that late into you career. It's just asking for trouble. The shoulder roll also requires agility and quick reaction speeds to carry out successfully something that Berto's Hulk like frame isn't designed to do.
Floyd Mayweather has worked on that one manoeuvre his whole life and he still gets hit. What chance does Andre Berto have?
i thought he used it pretty well tonight
first round gets completely rocked and staggered
third round gets rocked and staggered
fourth round gets rocked and staggered all over the ring
hey but that 2nd round!
He's too flatfooted, and he doesn't have the necessary upper body movement...
Its not just about rolling the shoulder, you have to lean back, and shrink the opening with you right hand (close it like an automatic door)... Also, u have to step back quick, or dip real low (sometime lower than the waste, which is illegal) after u roll the first punch cause otherwise ur just a sitting duck that's off balance...
It's like one day he said my defense isn't good. How can I improve it? And someone in his camp said how about the shoulder roll? You're fast and slick like Floyd.
Honestly, Berto doesn't have the reflexes or iq to use it effectively. He doesn't have the footwork either. All ghost had to do was smother him and he was done. Berto was pretty much a sitting duck. Also, he shouldn't have been experimenting with it on Guerrero.
You also need to be watching your opponent's every twitch like a hawk, and constantly moving and feinting yourself. All in a package. it needs a pretty good anticipation etc.
he looked pretty good till he quit
reminded me what tyson ssaid
Because a successful shoulder roll, which is actually easy to achieve, also needs a good solid elbow to the throat......He wasn't doing that.
also as someone said why with guerrero ?
but when you look at all the fights that have given him trouble it's been southpaws and then to try it for the first time with a southpaw is retarded.
^IronDanHamza nailed it!
Don't Have The Reflexes Or Timing! Not only that but Shoulder Roll is actually for when your fighting INSIDE, it is the perfect defense when your dealing with and BULL/Power Puncher and you went to get inside of them and kind smother them and take away their Power. Watching the Richard Abril fight vs Rios for Philly Shell 101 and how it SHOULD BE USED I think he uses it the best after Mayweather of course.
Adrien Broner uses the James Toney version of it more so then Mayweather's or Abril's, Broner uses it to soften up the Blows and the Impact of the Punch but he is not afraid to take a punch similar to James Toney in his PRIME whom was defensive but at the same time loved to slug it out as well that is how Broner fights and I think against a guy like Maidana you will see Broner look very impressive against Maidana style, a guy that will come to him and he will be able to get into that shell and just pick him apart especially with Maidana's lack of head movement and defense
He doesn't have the reflexes, skills, timing or just general talent.
It also takes many years to perfect.
Mayweathers been practising the shoulder roll from a very early age and has the all the tools needed for it to work.
Berto doesn't have anything.
