A lot of people say Mayweather doesn't fight like a man, toe to toe, etc..
I wonder how many people have actually been in the gym when they say that. In experience, fighting defensively especially in May's style is TOUGH. You're in there, sometimes even in the pocket.. Not throwing back waiting for your counters.. that's real scary **** to do.
I've always felt safer throwing down, than waiting in the ring.
I'm sorry if my post is too cerebral for you. Why don't you begin all over again with books featuring 3 letter words above which are the correct pictures. Then work up slowly to 5 letter words. (I omit 4 letter words because I'm sure you already know more than you should) I suppose it would have to be slowly......
I say this because I just don't want to tell you that you aren't too spacious between the ears...as Mark Twain might have said.
Huh?...I thought I told you to venture into highway traffic without a car?
Its tougher to play offense...think about it... how many fighters go into a shell when their opponet is on offense and how many times have you said, " all he had to do was let his hands go and he would have won."
What Floyd does today is skillful when he can get away with staying in the pocket and play defense; this is when his defense is applauded. When he's boxing (using his feet to get away) or dodges away from punchs is what other boxers do in the ring.
Floyd has a size advantage and he has a "great" experiance advantage now a days.
I guess soldiers Who Duck for Cover during massive gun fights " doesn't fight like men" too huh??:usa:...smfh stupid prick!!!...
So are the Cops who Wear Bullet Proof vest..The Criminals don't...Come on take that vest off and have a Shootout like "Men"..:fing02:
Yeah yeah anyone who gets in the ring is a man blah blah blah....
They chose boxing as a career so STFU with all that nonsense.
Floyd created a style that is so boring that judges don't score most rounds against him unless he gets dropped - plus he gets away with all of that elbowing to measure opponents and holding if they are too busy for him. I bet he'd stink it up if he was fighting James Kirkland.
lol sure, people watch Mayweather for his "flashy" defence. Dream on.
It's not how he became big either, he rose to prominence on the back of fighting exciting opponents like Gatti, De La Hoya and Hatton and talking ish on 24/7.
WRONNG!!! Floyd was always promoted as a defensive specialist, and at the time he was so good, that it was rare what he was doing. Every defensive fighter is not the same, some are boring. What Floyd did to ghost was kind of boring. What he did to JMM was athletically amazing. Two completely different Mayweather's. When he fought Ghost, people booed. When he fought JMM everyone was going "Oooh and Ahhh" The whole fight, people where just amazed by the speed, reflexes, agility, calmness. Its like Watching Bruce Lee. Against Ghost he was kind of slow, and only landed because of feints, and timing. The Mayweather who fought JMM does not fight like Bhop and Rigo. Bhop and Rigo are not that similar btw. Rigo ran like a typical cuban, and how Floyd ran from Ghost. Bhop is a spoiler and fights dirty. Floyd did allot of clinching against Ghost, because he was not able to fight on the inside. But point Im making is Rigo, Bhop, The Floyd who fought Ghost, is kind of boring. The Floyd who fought JMM is kind of like a tactically sound version of Roy Jones. The speed, the way he leaps accross the ring to land a hook. Go back and watch that fight, and there are NO boos, nor is the audience mute. Their making noise everytime he does something flashy, or shows off his reflexes and magical defense.
Does what it takes to win. Works for him since some fans just get off on hitching on a winner. Holding, running, cowering, sucker-punching, elbowing, btching...very manlike.
This exactly, people think shelling up automatically makes you impenetrable. I could guarantee anyone who thinks the philly shell is an easy defense, I could guarantee you even a first weeker at a gym could crack your shell if you tried it.
Remember when Floyd was fighting Cotto and started shooting around the guard with his right? We need versatile thinking like that for someone to give May a real fight.
Just watch Berto's interpretation of the "Shoulder Roll" LOL
If he was a come forward fighter, we wouldnt be fans. The only reason people pay to see him fight, is because of his flashy defense. It wasnt that flashy against Ghost, but against JMM, that was athletical brilliance. Floyd was always promoted as a skilled defensive fighter and thats the reason he became big. All the trash talk he does outside of the ring, I think mostly all of us agree is and was uneeded. It has nothing to do with those once in a lifetime skills

people will always be fascinated by the best. doesn't matter so much how floyd fights, just how good he is. like, he could be an equivalently skilled aggressive fighter and most of his fans would still appreciate that. defensive boxing has no intrinsic aesthetic advantage over offensive fighting, it just so happens that the #1 guy in boxing right now is a defensive boxer. it's good to see mastery in all its forms.

yeah i enjoyed that performance too. it's even better watching it in retrospect with the knowledge that jmm proceeded to beat pacquiao twice at 147 lbs. there was a suspicion around the time of the fight that he was 'done' or couldn't handle the weight, but i guess that wasn't the case after all.
If Floyd was a come-forward KO artist we wouldn't be hearing any of his fans defending "running", it would be all about the KOs and about how "Floyd is a warrior". They'd love him to be a Tyson of his division.
Most of these guys don't genuinely like him for his boxing and they find it no more exciting than the rest of us (despite what they claim), they like him for the wannabe rapper character he portrays and like to ride a winning bandwagon.

Floyd-Marquez wasn't boring?
You bugging, that was Floyd's best performance in his entire life. That was one of the first fights that Floyd started going the whole fight without getting grazed. Lightning fast, Roy Jones Athleticism, and the crowd was going "Oooh, Ahhh" everytime he did one of those slick flashy moves. They made that noise the entire fight. Now against Ghost, he was slow as hell and had allot of boring ass rounds!!
I've always felt safer throwing down, than waiting in the ring.
That's interesting...but it's not really correct.
Bottom line is you are most vulnerable when you're in the act of throwing punches. You probably feel safe because you're not in with guys who can make you miss and make you pay and/or are willing to punch WITH you. At the professional level, guys can do this. So Mayweather's style of fighting definitely takes LESS heart than to fight like someone like Brandon Rios.
When you tend to only throw 1 or 2 punches at a time, and you are quick with good reflexes, you will barely get hit. That's what Floyd likes to do.
But this is boxing. The objective is to hit, and not get hit. Not to "fight like a man" or "fight toe to toe and be tough". This is a sport. It doesn't take skill to just stand and trade. It takes skill to do what Floyd does. Period.
The funny thing is, Floyd is a dog and has shown it on several occassions. He just doesn't have to be.
good post.
great point about the scoring for potshotting.
i admire great skill, like im sure all boxing fans should, but when potshotting wins the round instead of pressing the fight & ring generalship, then thats when i scratch my head....
example, we joke about malignaggi... but he pressed the fight against broner and landed repeated body shots & WORKED the whole round; but once broner lands a clean counter shot, everyone automatically gives adrien the round. im a broner fan, but even i was frustrated at broners lack of offense, he let off the gas. i was more impressed with what paulie was able to do....
jmm is the PERFECT example of a counterpuncher that presses the fight and has GREAT ring generalship... the moment he let off the gas against pac, he gets called out quickly and loses a close decision.... broner & floyd seem to be immune to that criticism.
its all about choices, "fighting like a man" seems to be the ability to CHOOSE to go in for the kill when you can easily coast to a decision.... or CHOOSE to engage when you know you outgun your opponent instead of sitting back and prolonging the inevitable decision...
I think the mistake being made, respectfully, is that power is part of scoring. scoring is based in part on clean, effective punching. if a jab is clean it should be scored, regardless of how hard it lands or if a fan labels it a potshot.
you should fight to win. if boxing and moving-controlling the pace, ring genralship and clean punching, and defense is the best way for a fighter to win it makes no sense for them to fight another way.
When he came out like that I was literally thinking WTF is he trying, hes not even a defensive master with a full guard let alone a philly shell. My god lol he never recovered from the knockdowns
HAHAHA. indeed, i was teleported back in time and started chanting:
"OFF WITH HIS HEAD!!!"
at least we got some great photos of a puffed up berto. LOL
Call me when Rigondeaux moves up 4 weight classes.
The best example is just look at Berto vs Guerrero and Guerrero vs PBF. It was crazy how Guerrero was gassed by round 7 in the Floyd fight, he just couldn't do a thing and he got frustrated and winded. And who could forget Berto trying the shoulder roll? lol!
to be fair, if berto fought his natural way, i think he wouldve done better against robert... im a fan of neither, but i was pulling for berto to knock this dude out.... then when i saw berto's "shoulder roll", then i IMMEDIATELY wanted guerrero to punish this clown. LOL
Thing is for me, all I ever see Floyd doing most of the time is extremely good movement, but just potshotting. It has influenced judging in the sport to score points for potshotting for most of the round, instead of fighting. Floyd gets ridiculously stupid scores in fights, like the Cotto scores. That fight was either 115-113 or 116-112, with the latter most likely.
He has a defensive style which is boring in a lot of peoples eyes (an opinion just as valid as the people who like his style of fighting). I think people confuse liking a chess match to being a "in-depth" fan. His personality and antics are what sells the fights though, as well as his status, but its his opponent which usually brings the excitement.
Floyd is a boxer, takes guts to get in a ring. But he's just not a warrior. Some people just aren't. And really, if he doesn't care about it, noone else should really. He'll go down for his skills, not for his heart.
