Today I heard (Jack Napier) that Cotto is a journeyman. At first my reaction was that that was a ridiculous suggestion. Cotto has a solid resume and has only lost to greats. Is Cotto really a journeyman or just underrated on NSB?
To say he is a journeyman is a joke. Losing your last two to Floyd and Austin doesn't make you a journeyman. He's a the end of his career and fighting above his natural weight. He's never been a true JMW and the Trout fight showed it.
saul alvarez has something to say about that.just look at how much bigger mayweather - alvarez will be than mayweather - cotto.
wlad klitschko also draws much better than cotto at this point in their respective careers.
its a natural progression...fighters have their time and it passes. canelo assuming he wins would seem to be on a path to surpass money, pac and cotto with his legion of fans south of the border but then eventually somebody in the future will surpass him naturally...
What has saul alvarez done on PPV? Cotto-Trout did better numbers than Canelo-Trout. Just because the promotion of Mayweather-Canelo has been bigger doesnt mean he is a bigger draw. Cotto clearly has the track record to show it.
track record? alvarez is 23 years old. who cares if he's sold more ppv in the past than a guy who is just starting out? nobody is talking about ppv sales in the past. in terms of their respective drawing power right now there is no comparing the two. cotto is coming off of two losses. alvarez - mayweather will probably sell close to two million ppv. alvarez is the bigger draw.

He is a superstar and 3rd biggest draw in boxing. He has 4 loses and avenged one of them so for the record he has lost to Pacquiao when he was p4p #1 , Mayweather p4p #1 and Trout that was bigger, stronger and a top 3 154 pounder. He gave Mayweather the toughest fight of his career so no he aint a journeyman.

I don't think it's fair to say Cotto isn't a dedicated fighter, He trains very hard but I just think Father Time has caught up to him. He's trying to change things up by going with Roach but I don't think you can teach and old dog new tricks.
he's literally a bit chubby at 154. he's well known to be a partier, etc. when he lost the trout fight he simply said "we'll see" or somethign similar, when asked about the rest of his career. that's a guy who has mentally checked out of boxing. his abilities and his boxing skills will allow him to compete around the top of the sport, but he's still never shown the drive in the ring that he displayed prior to the first margarito fight.
before that fight cotto would get hit and fight back. post margarito he'd generally cower or backup when he got hurt. he went to war for the first few rounds of the pacquiao fight, for instance, but the second he got hurt (second knockdown, 5th round i think,) he completely abandoned the idea of winning.
He's a former champion on the decline. But still the 3rd biggest draw in boxing. He's not a journeyman. Journeyman never quite made it and never passed a certain level. To call him a gatekeeper im not too sure. He's still capable of making big fights against Marquez, Bradley, or Martinez. Gatekeeprs fight up and coming prospects and emerging stars. Cotto is a star in the sport that gets alot of hate on here. He's fought everybody. Many boxers who duck are given more credit smh lol.
Journeyman is a bit harsh. Not elite by any stretch of the imagination, never has been. He was a world class fighter in his day. He's in the same bracket as Ricky Hatton for me. A genuine world champion but just short of making the elite.
Now he's a gatekeeper. He's the man the the contenders beat up to to put themselves in the frame.
cotto is a faded fighter.
he's not as dedicated as he used to be. he can be made to back up, quit, cower, or abandon the idea of winning. he's at a weight where he does not belong. he's never been known as a dedicated fighter, or somebody who loves the gym. i think he's at 154 because he's unwilling to make the sacrifices (IE train more than 2 hours a day, stop drinking, and starve yourself,) to fight at 147.
he's fighting for the money exclusively. he doesn't have the drive outside of that. his boxing skills are good enough that a faded miguel cotto can still be a contender, but he's never been the same since the first margarito fight.
he's also flat out rude to puerto ricans. a facebook poll rated him their most "hated" athlete. that said, floyd mayweather and lebron james would win the same award in the states, and they're two of the planet's very best athletes.

Let's take a look at Miguel Cotto's resume:
Torres: undefeated, came back to win a championship
Malignaggi: undefeated, came back to win a championship
Maussa: undefeated, came back to win a championship
Quintana: undefeated, came back to win a championship
Judah: came back to win a championship
Mosley: became THE welterweight champion after Cotto loss
N'dou: came back to win a championship
Clottey: likely to contend/win a championship again
Foreman: undefeated champion
Not to forget he beat former champions like Cesar Bazan & Corley.
Add Margarito to that list and the fact he's avenged his highly suspected 1st defeat.
This is a 3-division champion who has consistently took on everyone. He gave also gave Mayweather a good fight, I gave him 5 rounds in that fight.
I think it's time the boxing community take their hat off to Cotto because he's been a credit to the sport and he's a genuine great of the modern era! I watch boxing because of guys like Cotto. Just look at his resume and how many chain ship fights he's been in.
I suspect Margarito took a lot out of him in their first fight but to say you couldn't see greatness when he fought Margarito and Mosley is unfair. Cotto is a quality boxer puncher, and according to Emmanuel Steward he had the greatest left hook in boxing history.
Spot on.

lmao :wtf:
Oh,nah Floyd beat the hell out of JLC and outclassed him the second time around..So maybe he was injured..You'll get no argument from me there,I just thought that was one of Floyds hardest fights(and man that was yrs ago,I was like 12 or 13 when that fight happened),with Cotto and Corley not far behind..
Yeh im gonna have to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Cotto is one crafty fighter, look at some of his punches he tries to thumb poke mayweather and he extends at the end of them so its like a double punch when floyds in the corner. Smart smart guy.
