Good lord, this man was fast in his day. Blistering hand-speed and combination punching. No way the current crop would hang with Jones. Its absolutely scandalous Jones is still fighting man. When you look at his record now, it looks mediocre. When really Jones was almost unbeatable in his prime.
Prime Roy Jones best win was prime James Toney. End of the day he beat a lot of solid opposition. Obliterated natural Lightheavys Hill and Griffin. Earned my respect when he gutted out a win on Tarver after coming down from Heavyweight. Hopefully he hangs em up before his health declines.
hopkins???????
Fanatics would argue that Roy is/was greater than SRR if
1. He fought Darius, Benn and Calz earlier ( he'll beat them all without losing a round)
2. He retired after Tarver I
3. It would be nice also if Montell I was ruled a NC.

Roy was the greatest fighter i have ever seen fight next to Muhammad Ali given that Ali was a heavyweight.
If he had retired after Tarver 1, his hype would have been incredible. You would see a lot of people overrating him into the top 10 or 5 ever.
RJJ severely overrated.
That was after the fact that he was kayoed by mediocre fighters. up to Tarver I he had accomplished great things. He'll beat anybody in his prime
He was also a PED user and it's very obvious.
That was one fight.
RJJ was more spectacular because of the power element. SRR was more a showboat with great heart and boxing IQ. His combinations were like Paulie's. One knock I have against RJJ is he is not keen on finishing his opponent.
I was talking about accomplishments if Roy had done those 3 things.
head to head i will bet on Prime Roy Jones Jr against ANYBODY in history between 160 and 175lbs including SRR.
Did anyone expect Roy to be that guy, the guy that wouldn't know when to let the sport go?In a way, yes....for one simple reason....he always mentioned Gerald McClellan and said he would not want to risk injury by fighting after his prime. He was wrong. But on topic, Jones was a freaking fighting machine with pure brilliance in his prime. One of my 5 favorite all-time fighters. #4 as seen on my avatar.

absolutely not. not after what happened to his friend Gerald McClellan.
And ironically he was on the HBO commentary team for one of old Foreman's fights, and if I remember well he said he would not try to fight at Foreman's age. He's now 44 years old...
he tested positive once, it was a product recently added to the banned list it was something you could buy at GNC at the time, but the funny thing is his opponent was on the same stuff and had a greater amount of the PED in his system and still got whooped, i never considered that a tainted win it was an even playing field
His opponent was a kindergarten teacher or something.
There was never anybody faster. However, when did he start the PEDs and when did get get off it?

here's the illusion....
u always look quicker against
1. slower fighters (handspeed)
2. fighters who move in straight lines (footspeed)
3. when you're juiced off your tits
In before roid jones jr.
his about as relevant to me then marion jones doing long jump and the sprint.
no one cares about your opinion (you being an idiot and all)

No. Jones was just that fast, and made decent opposition look amateurs in there. Jones was a smart boxer, with ring intelligence. No way the current crop hang in there, maybe Ward, but I still think Jones would have him out of there. No way does Froch or Kessler even touch him at his best.
Did anyone expect Roy to be that guy, the guy that wouldn't know when to let the sport go?
100% no. Once he had achieved his goals I thought he would hang them up. It really saddens me that he continues to fight, getting stopped by guys he would have obliterated in his prime.
A phenomenal boxer in his prime. Anyone too young, or new to boxing, needs to get on youtube and get the fights watched!
