Regardless of how pleasing his style is to casual boxing fans if the Cuban diaspora in Florida filled an arena with 10,000 fans the way the Polish do for Adamek in New Jersey guys like Lara and Rigo wouldn't have this problem. Rigo, his manager and Cuban fans need to be chastising themselves not a business like HBO for pointing out that he isn't profitable. Make it profitable and the support will follow.
According to the 2010 census there are 1.21 Million Cubans in Florida. In contrast the top five US cities with the largest Polish populations have roughly half the amount with 600,000. The largest New York only has 213,447.

Food for thought.
LOL. I didn't expect this. I assumed it's self explanatory.
I thought I gave the best example in Broner. Do you really need to promote a guy like Broner? Fans like the way he fights. Aside from that he comes up with antics like asking his dad to brush his hair at the end of the fight. He showboats and taunts his opponents. And outside the ring he's an ass.
Need I say more? You don't need a promoter with a guy like this.
Fighting with a style attractive to fans is self-promotion. It's something promoters have no control over.
Arum could set up a big fight with Rigo by reaching out to Golden Boy. Rigondeaux against Mares or Santa Cruz would be a big fight. And Golden Boy in the past has shown interest in making one of those happen.
But Bob won't do it.
I think there are too many posters on this thread who are using Florida as the convenient excuse to why Rigo is a box office flop.
Truth is Cubans aren't passionate boxing fans and they never were. I hardly ever agree with Arum on anything but he mentioned how hard it is to promote Cubans long before Rigo and Donaire have ever fought and he was right on the money no matter how crooked he is...
rofl.
you are the only person in the world who thinks florida sports fans are passionate. they're well known to be a fair weather fanbase. sports teams have never done well in florida. neither has boxing.
i don't know what you're trying to accomplish by standing here flat out lying.
Pretty sure he was being sarcastic. We all know Florida fans are a giant POS. The Marlins ranked 28th out 30 teams in average attendance in 2003. The same 2003 when the Marlins won a World Series! The Tampa Bay Rays have been a great team for 6 years now and they still ranked dead last in average attendance last year. Anything besides a Mayweather fight down there would probably flop.
The gutting of the marlins team happened because they underachieved & loria lost big bucks! It didn't help hiring ozzie guillen to a 4 year contract only to have him praise fidel castro & alienate a large portion of the fan base. Some sponsors were pulled shortly after. It was a media nightmare for loria. He had no choice but to fire guillen with 3 years left in his contract. I know he isn't the best owner but he's won 2 world series since he sold the montreal expos...he's done something right at one point... Wish they could turn it around...
Loria didn't win 2 championships just 1 as owner and it wasn't his staff that made it happen. He inherited a team that he never made and they won the championship and he still using the excuse that it was him who was the genius that won us the 2003 World Series. Since then he has dealt away great players like Miguel Cabrera for peanuts smh and every good player was traded or never resign because Loria and Dave Samson are scum owners and they are nothing but crooks that are doing the same thing they did in Montreal. Loria hasn't won anything during his time here and last season he let go of all those players because he a cheap ass owner that was played like a sucker by Guillen. A real Marlins fan like me knows wtf is happening down here, Loria is garbage dude you can't vouch for that man.
Like I said again Miami sports fans are passionate and diehard fans. There are bandwagon fans in every city, game 6 of the finals those people left because they aren't real fans just rich people who want to be in the place to be and don't give a fvck about the local team.
Bring megafights down here in Miami and the people will show. Bring a crappy product and it will flop because nobody is stupid down here
I didn't think someone nationality should play any significance in showcasing a boxer, but the boxer himself should know his market value, if Rigo isn't as popular as Nonito then he should not command or demand the same fees that someone like Nonito might command, having said that someone like Rigo should be showcase to boxing fans, not all boxing fans want a brawler shove down their throats.
Yes because they are very passionate...

A while back, I read an article in which Arum claimed that he had difficulty promoting Gamboa to the White Cuban population in Florida because they were reluctant to embrace a Black Cuban fighter. He pointed out how Arguello was able to gain a big following with that community, yet many Cuban fighters never received the same level of support. I dunno about the validity of that claim as Arum is generally full of crap and I'm not too familiar with racial dynamics within that community. :dunno:Good old BS, most of the Cuban boxer had being black, the most revere Cuban boxer could not be blacker, Kid Chocolate, BA is full of crap like always...
You mean the same Miami fans who missed one of the greatest comebacks in basketball history because they left a freaking NBA Finals elimination game early when their team was only down 4 points? GTFO
Yes because they are very passionate...
Lol I follow sports playboy and always see those marlin, jaguar.devil rays, and magic home games empty. And there's a reason why those fighters never get brought there for fights cuz they wouldn't draw $h1t. And didn't the marlins go threw a big spending spree last off season to bring the fans????? How did that work out? Not trying to hate on Florida just saying its bs that some very good fighters don't get the buzz they deserve down there . Even Devon Alexander is a draw in stl, ward in Oakland. How did Roy jones fights do on Florida???? Nobody went and he was 1 pfp at the time
It will shatter the myth that Cubans don't support their athletes, they were losing, the Marlins, you bring fans by winning, every time Jose Fernandez is in the mound the place is packed, Cespedes is love in Oakland as Puig in LA and Ibañez and Morales in Seattle, why? Not only they perform they been show in commercials do your home work son, they targeting Pinoys and Mexicans because they will love a fly if smashed its head against the wall, Canelo is a big draw because he is red head and have freckles not because he is this monster in the ring, beating Lopez, Hatton, Gomez, little Cotto and having a very controversial win against a feather fisted Trout doesn't make you an elite, and yet he is a Mexican favorite, the funny thing is that he throws 10 punches per round gas out after the 6 round and he a "marvelous" boxer, gtfo, guys that likes this fighter have no business critiquing any standout Cuban fighter or from any other country for that matter...
Riiight, Capt Obvious. Every fight needs a promoter... surprise.
...and a magic wand to make the fighter look good.
...and the fighter's only responsibility is to fight. Forget the booing.
Riight. What a.....
3 of the best promoted fighters in the sport. LOL
i've started to learn the value of not wasting my sunday morning explaining to complete idiots how boxing works.
i can't abstain from posting in threads like these, but at least i recognize that my sunday would be better off without NSB idiots needing me to hold their hands and tell them about boxing.
If everything is up to the promoter, then all boxers can be Cotto, or Pac, or May...
Man, come on....
that is not what i'm saying (though i doubt you even read my posts,) but you're uninformed so i don't expect you to make any relevant arguments or statements. promotors very clearly gravitate toward talents, personalities, and most importantly fanbases, which are often regional or ethnic. that doesn't mean they don't need promotors.
do fighters need promotors or not?
simple question that you've already answered in your previous posts. you don't think they do, which demonstrates your ignorance on the subject. you don't even know what a promotor does. you think they just sit back and cash checks, and that adrien broner's twitter account is the reason he's making seven figures two or three times a year.

Dude, you can have the best promoter in the world and people would still not show up. Fans base their decision on the fighter's past fights. And if they didn't like what they see... BUT you can still trick them and promise fans to give them an entertaining fight. You can actually lie.
Man, come on.
right. says the guy who doesn't know what the f#ck he's talking about.
you don't need a promotor? you don't know what a promotor does. there's a huge difference between you not understanding something and something being unnecessary.
you understand that there's more than talking **** on a camera to promoting a fight?
i mean really, do you have any idea what a promotor does? venues, contracts, sponsorships, networks, finance, accounting/taxes, press tours, media relations, and much more. they run a multimillion dollar businesses. they "produce" fighters.
99.9% of fighters can't do any of that, and don't. they talk on twitter and elle sechback's youtube, though. big f#Cking deal. if that's the extent of what you consider "promoting" then there's not much more i can tell you.
adrien broner would be an absolute nobody without a push from his promotor and manager, both of whom have incredible pull with HBO and showtime.
fighters need promotors. managers too. fighters train and fight. if you don't understand that then you're not worth any further effort in the provision of an explanation.

There's hundreds of Adrien Broners across boxing gyms everywhere. They just don't get the promotion and opponent selection that he does.
