When it comes to Tyson, even though he was one of the most feared and successful heavyweights ever, there is always a feeling of "what if?". There is always the debate about whether or not he was able to realize his potential.
Personally, I think that his resume, although not jaw dropping, is solid enough to make him one of the best heavyweights ever. I don't know where he ranks in the list but he deserves to be in it. He is also one of my favorites but that is another subject. Anyway, if you were to pick his top 5 wins, which fights would you choose? I would choose Michael Spinks, Larry Holmes (old but still decent), the two fights against Razor Ruddock, and Tony Tucker.
He has other solid wins over former champions and contenders such as James Tillis, Tony Tubbs, Trevor Berbick, James Smith, Carl Williams, Frank Bruno, and so on, but I think these are not up there with the top 5 I chose.
I think we can agree that Tyson's resume is somewhat lacking, but there is no denying that he was a force to be reckoned with, a heavyweight that captured the fans' imagination and he gave the sport of boxing a big boost back in the 80's.
I think his resume is good, although not stellar. He beat a bunch of good/very good fighters and showed the attributes of an ATG heavyweight even if the hw scene was not at its best at the time.
Spinks, Tucker, Holmes, Bruno
Wow, looking at it now there's not that many names on his resume that are even worth mentioning....maybe pinklon thomas
This thread is exactly why I only look at the consistency and best wins and draws (and the detail surrounding the fights) and very close losses/robberies on a fighters resume and not his clear cut losses when talking about his resume. This is the only way to fairly rank a fighters greatness. Their ability to lose to HOF and ATG fighters does not make them any greater at all, in fact it shows us they are not on a level above the competition and gives us an idea of styles/strategies they are vulnerable against. Getting beat up by two legends in Holyfield and Lewis does not count as a name on your resume because you got your butt whooped. In the Lewis fight, yeah sure Mike was past it but it still doesn't do anything to further his resume because the guy beating up on him was an ATG. Just because the guy beating you up is class, doesn't make you class. Let's look at Tyson... he got beat up by Holyfield (Mike not prime but not miles away from it either) and Buster Douglas (call it an off night but it still shows his vulnerabilities) and as mentioned before Lewis albeit not prime at all. So we turn to the wins, how is the consistency? Well it's pretty poor, most of the wins coming against B level fighters. So how are his best wins? They are so so. Spinks being the best and it is impressive because of the dominance but then who we got? And old Holmes? Big Frank? Berbick? Tucker? Thomas? I mean these are slim pickings here. Tysons resume is not great at all when we look at it with a critical eye. And this is no hate on Mike, I met him and he is a lovely man (at least nowadays anyway!) and he is great to watch... and maybe his skill does outweigh his resume but ranking just the resume alone and it is far from impressive.
And Wlad didn't dominate them? He didn't struggle with Haye, he easily outpointed him with his fukin jab. He outpointed Peter in the first fight(he was on the canvas, but only one of those KDs was legit), than he knocked him out in the second fight.
And if Holmes is one of Tyson's best win maybe Wlad should fight Holyfield, that would be as legit as Mike knocking Larry out
keep going what other wins are better than tysons? ... I'll give you haye as a top 3 or 4 and both byrd and sam peter as solids ...
How is Byrd "solid"? Guy beat Holyfield, Vitali...Chagaev is also one of Wlad's best win.
Michael Spinks is the only legit win on Tyson's resume, that's it.
Seriously? Holmes is his second best win? Sam Peter, Haye, Byrd are better than any of Tysons wins except Spinks maybe

spinks
holmes
tucker

other good wins include smith, berbick, tubbs, biggs, williams, frazier and ruddock. And what should also be taken into account is not just the who but the how. With the exception of tucker he dominated all of them (smith survived by running all night) There is a tendency these days to simply look at the who when dealing with tyson and it completely ignores the fact that at his best the guy was devastating. There's MUCH better wins on his record than there is in either klitscko for example.

spinks
holmes (underrated ... holmes was passed his best but by no means shot as some claim just look at the holyfield fight shortly after)
