If you don't like him, there is something wrong with you. The kid has talent, skill, versatility, hunger to fight anyone and ability to do whatever it takes to win. As I was watching the interview after his KO of PDL, he said something that really stuck with me. It was along the lines of, "DPDL is my friend, so I hope hes ok. It sucks to have to hit your friend, but this is what we do".
All of these other fighters talking about "I can't fight my friend" are one some straight up BS. You get into this sport knowing its one on one competition. Of course you're going to make friends along the way, but its never an excuse to not fight someone. Abner Mares is the new Erik Morales.
Big Mares fan. I'm in a bind though cause I like both him and Mikey, ouch.
But yes, Mares is a fighter that you don't have to defend. My type of fighter. I don't need to study business and matchmaking and ducking concerning Mares. Simple, to the liver sign the dotted line type fighter, my type of fighter.
Abner Mares is one of those guys that fans don't really understand how good he really is.
When most fans look at him, they say he isn't special in any one thing he does. He's not super fast, he's not a great puncher, and he tends to brawl more than he should at times.
The longer I been watching this kid, I see a very versatile fighter, one of the best in boxing. He can brawl and pressure the way we saw him vs Moreno. He can box and move the way he did vs PDL. He can mix all of it and change styles the way he did vs Darchinyan.
Plus, he has a huge heart, great chin and is incredible shape. I think Mares is one of those guys who fans will continue to talk bad about, bet against, and he will just keep winning and surprising people.
When I saw him at first with Nacho coming out with the high hands ala JMM Rafa and R. Lopez I was like ohhh **** here is the next guy to continue that. ALways been a fan, wasn't sure what to think when he split from Beristein but obviously he is still having great success. He has adjusted to some very difficult styles and it was great to see him boxing again in the PDL fight (although he looked like he was tiring). The Agbeko fight did piss me off because I liked Joseph too and the whole thing was just ridiculous. Overall, Iy became a fan all over again during that Batam tourney I enjoyed those fights
Nacho resigned as his coach because mare signed with Espinoza to be how manager and at that point nacho was serving as mares manager a well, but not only that this around the time that rafa was fighting with Vasquez whobwas also an Espinoza trainer. I guess nacho could trust mares after that and thought he might be a spy or something
Ive seen him on p4p lists, his the only guy on most i m not ashamed to say ive never watched.
Could anyone suggest a fight I could search for?
A ko would be good
His last two fights were awesome. @126 TKO9 and @122 UD12 (against an impressive pure boxer).
What's not to like about Abner Mares? He's talented and has a good boxer/puncher style that I like to watch. It's good that he's hungry to achieve as well.
What will be interesting to see is, if he's lucky to be in the sport for 15 years or more, how his outlook will be then. Same hunger? Same desire? Same objectivity about opponents? I'm not for one minute saying that he definitely change, but success (and failure) affect people in different ways. It'll interesting to see how hungry he is to punch someone 10+ years his junior in the face, especially if they're close to him or he has a damn sight more to lose. Time will tell.
Legend, he should be P4P -3
I wouldn't go that far yet. He's accomplished a lot in the last 3 years but there's guys that deserve it more (even though I think P4P is bull****).
You could have him anywhere from 8-5 but top three is too soon.
I've been a fan for a long time now. The guy just keeps getting better and better. I wouldn't rule him out against anyone in and around his weight class. Even though he doesn't do anything spectacularly, he's intelligent and athletic enough that he can adjust against every style that he's faced so far.
I'd love to see him get the Chis John fight, more realistic than Mike Garcia!

He is likable but not extra ordinary, from what ive seen over the years but he keeps getting better, id like to see him face Mikey Garcia if i had my way in the 126 division to really see what he is about.
I'm a fan. I used to hate him because he was a nut hunter, but I've come around to him.
Yep, his enterance music should be the theme from The Nutcracker.
