Gatekeeper.
AKA the Semi-Elite and former Elites.
I'll tell ya what. Even though Oscar De La Hoya lost a handful of his biggest fights, I consider him the greatest gatekeeper of all time.
I don't even think classifying DLH as a gatekeeper is even right. He was a beast.
Unless you call him the Golden Gatekeeper.
hahahahaha tthe golden gatekeeper

In order to get passed The Gate Keeper you will need this guy.

Doesn't/hasn't won the title. Always on the cusp, and ends up short or has won a title and lost it, or has never won the title. He/she is right there though outside the gate, but can't step inside that gate until they win a chip.
But that is not the meaning of "gatekeeper". The term gatekeeper is not about that guy not being able to step inside that gate, it is about that guy preventing others from stepping inside that gate.

It can be a past prime fighter who can no longer fight at the championship level. But they can still be a good measuring stick for young up and coming fighters. Once the young fighter beats the gate keeper, they could be ready for a title shot. If the young fighter loses, he may need more fine tuning or he just isn't that good. Gate keepers don't have to be past prime though. Two I can think of are Shane Mosley and Randall Bailey.
A guy that separates the men from the boys~ they can be at any level really but they will generally beat the guys that aren't real while the real deals will almost always beat them (unless there is some weird match-up issue).
A Gatekeeper is somebody who is not good enough to be or beat a world champion, but he beats pretty much all the other guys. So he keeps contenders from getting a world title shot because those contenders have to get passed the "gatekeepers" first, but usually they don't pass that test. Because the gatekeeper will beat everybody except the world champions.
