R i n g TV . com: What do you make of Mayweather's requesting a catchweight for the first time?
SRL: It kind of neutralizes things and balances things out. I would have asked for it too. You try to get every advantage. Sometimes, it's not just a mental thing, but also, a psychological thing.
Put it this way. Could I have beaten Lalonde if he had been given two or three more pounds? Sure. It would have been the same result. Lalonde has never said, "Well, that weight killed me."
In fact, he was open to the weight reduction, the catchweight. He was like, "Hey, I'll make the weight, and I'll knock Ray out."
It's just what you do. I don't think it's major factor, but psychologically, it's a big factor, if that makes sense. You always wanted the psychological edge.

Your so fake. You go out of your way to prove that your not neither a Floyd fan Nor a pac fan. Look at your quotes about cherrypicking. Look at how you said Ghost was a more complete fighter than Canelo, then after the fight you said the exact opposite. Look at how you hated on Canelo, then after he beat Trout, you used his pic as an avy, so you could prove that you respect him. You dont have to try so hard to make people see you as one way, or another. Just be a fan of the sport dude, ya lame.
And most of yall Floyd haters are mad that Floyd is fighting Canelo. But if he said he changed his mind about the fight, since people complain about the cw, ya KNOW you wouldnt want that. Because most of you dont actually care about the cw. Your so excited that the fight is happening, that it blinds you from the cw. But you PRETEND that your upset about it. Ya I kno.
Naw man the floyd haters just know deep down that nelo is going to be out boxed and exposed! So what they do is find whatever they think is wrong, outrageous that floyd does and blow it way out of proportion!
They have been doing it for years and wont stop until floyd is out the game! They just seem to overlook that nelo is 14 years younger and bigger then Floyd but that don't matter in there eyes lol!

Dam Ray. Mayweather already has a bunch of advantages. The one thing that he may not have on Canelo is size. So instead of taking the challenge and showing everyone how great you are. Instead find a way to taint the victory if it comes. sad ****.
We were told, eff you when Margarito and Cotto signed for the cw fight with Pac. Now Floyd ask's for 152 because his opponent comes in over 170 lbs for 154 lb fights, and now he's the hypocrite.
Isn't the fight signed? What's all the crying about lol?
If Canelo comes in at 154...everything you all said would be hogwash. Oh but Floyd asked right? That's the sticker huh? Man **** yall, lmao! September will be here in no time.
It does irritate me when people talk about past guys like saints, or that new guys are breaking new ground with the stuff they do.
This shit has been going on for the whole history of the sport, the only different thing is how free information is now.
It would be interesting to see how Leonard would get talked about in the internet age, I reckon he would be viewed a fair bit different. I like SRL more than you but damn there is certainly room to be very critical of a bunch of stuff around his career, I still think he is great but I can also understand guys not liking him.
You nailed it buddy , thats exactly how it is , the internet gave birth to the hype junkie fan where they are all experts , the end result of that is real quality can easily get lost because of all the BS , today Leonard ,Robinson , Louis ,Ali etc etc , the net would have gone ballistic with hate for those great fighters .
They had a pepsi generation well this is the smart phone generation lol .
He pretty much admits that he didn't want to fight Duran in his peak condition. Then rather than rematch him straight away he waited for about 10 years, Pacquiao was routinely slated for waiting less than 5 years to rematch Marquez.
:lol1: @ "rather than rematch him straight away" - yeah, because Duran was totally in a position to justify a rematch after turning his back and walking away in a huge, high profile bout.
It's always adorable to see newbs attempt to use revisionist history in relation to topics or specific periods that they have absolutely no knowledge or understanding of.
Sugar ray fought hagler at a catchweight 2lbs south of 160lbs :smashfrea
:dunce:
Damn, SRL on dat save a hoe campaign huh. Floyd is lame and that's dat. Besides Ray is lying his a$$ off. He's never done anything compatible. Sure the Lalonde thing was lame, however he never competed at lightheavy before that farce. Unlike Floyd who's a 2 time jr middleweight champ.
well u do know he did the same thing to tommy hearns rite?? smh. if u are a leonard fan, do some research before talking outta your ass
you gon learn today
A fighter is made outside and inside the ring. What you do in your discipline and work ethic, makes you a great fighter. If Duran wasn't in shape, too fukin bad, that's on him being a fat lazy bum.
If Leonard would have waited and beat him, the excuse would have been something else.
Too fukin bad he got schooled by a better fighter. Leonard is an ATG and not only beat Duran, but made him quit. END OF STORY.
Margarito was losing the first 7 rounds in that fight, are you seriously comparing the two?
Fuk people, let's have some serious conversations and stop with the nonsesne. Jeeezus fukin Christ....
you're the one that said making someone quit is the definition of schooling
i'd consider a fight longer than 4 rd's where a guy thoroughky dominates more of a schooling to be honest..
anyway, it wasn't as if leonard was doing that impressively vs duran, he was just clowning whilst running, muting both guys offense
alot of these kids have run with the myth that Leonard was a saint...i still haven't forgotten that whole Hagler fiasco...and even the fight where Hearns beat him...not a fan
well he has admitted he thought hearns won that fight. but the whole lead up to the whole scoring controversy, leonard obviously tried to cherry pick tommy, it just went bad.

Leonard is one of my all time favourite fighters, but he is delusional here. I remember the Lalonde fight well and that includes the build-up. There was several segments about Lalonde and how he used alternative means of cutting weight including several hokus pokus measures. Lalonde's problems of going down was well known.
I'm sure Lalonde didn't care as Canelo doesn't care today. The pay for facing Leonard then and Floyd now is second to none in their respective generations.
Leonard is a great fighter but he also did a lot of shady stuff, those are not mutually exclusive.
Anyone acting like he is a saint that did no wrong has zero clue about SRL, he was the big stick of that era and anyone who is the big stick will always get over on other guys in boxing that is just how the sport works, if you can not handle the truth of that then boxing is the wrong sport for you~
well leonard did say he picked both duran and hagler at the most opportune time. not to mention the way he picked hearns for the last fight was questionable too. but at the same time, he picked great fighters. its hard to argue his place in history. but like he said, he was very smart at sniffing out advantages.

Yeah no. What I said is the truth. Leonard, by his own admission, demanded an immediate rematch because he knew Duran would not be in peak condition.

i always thought of a schooling as just outskilling a guy completely
does this mean margarito schooled cotto?
anyway, for such a schooling that leonard was puttin on for the most part all he did was make faces and run away, he didn't land much at all in the rematch
Margarito was losing the first 7 rounds in that fight, are you seriously comparing the two?

A lot of u ***** mutha ****as are so full of hate for one fighter that you are ready to throw dirt on ANOTHER fighter from the past that supports the fighter of today that YOU do not like lol. It really is a shame! Sugar ray Leonard is for sure an all time great fighter with arguanly the greatest resume of all Tim, at least top 5 resume's ever. But since he said something supporting Floyd, now people hate on the man lol. Granted, I'm not saying all of u. But some of u here are just wrong for this. I saw and read a few of the responses and I am honestly shocked! Sugar Ray Leonard took out 4 all time guest fighters and stopped 2 or 3 of them in their prime lol. But you want to hate on th man cause of hat he said supporting Floyd and of course you HATE Floyd lol. I will admit though, Leonard would have stopped Floyd in a 15 round fight lol
It was a schooling because Leonard was able to come back against this beast, change his game plan, fight with intelligence and made Duran quit.
I bet you seen it on replays only hu?
Duran quit, that was the definition of schooling.

This is why I hardly post on NSB.........
Good lord the nonsense in this place, it truly is embarrassing for this site.

Nope. Doesn't count.
Duran had a case of the bubblegutts and had to take a shit. Based on this simple fact alone, that "win" has a big fat * next to it.
Prime4Prime and with both boxers operating on a clear stomach, Duran beats Leonard 10 times out of 10.
And i say this as a guy that lives like 10 mins away Leonard's house and grew up training at his gym.
Paraphrasing Leonard's own words, he waited until the beast clawed his fangs. To be honest I don't understand how people can overlook Leonard saying he demanded the rematch straight away because he knew Duran would over indulge himself after victory, balloon up in weight and then have a difficult time getting back in shape. He pretty much admits that he didn't want to fight Duran in his peak condition. Then rather than rematch him straight away he waited for about 10 years, Pacquiao was routinely slated for waiting less than 5 years to rematch Marquez.
It's why I think that in 30 years time, the boxing fans will revere Mayweather, Pacquiao et al and make claims that the fighters of this generation do not take challenges. Only the good things are remembered down the stretch.
