Wonder rating
The fight between Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez against Englishman Martin Murray (Channel Seven, 20:16 pm) scored 24.7 rating points and became the most watched of the day and the second most-watched of the year, second only to the second program Journalism for all .
Also, I just looked over the previous weeks listings in Argentina and they seem to have almost weekly boxing shows airing on their main networks. Ratings are nowhere close to Sergio's but that's good to see.
There aren't that many "boxing fans" in the US.
There are fans of fighters but that doesn't mean that they will watch another fight not involving their fave.
I'm sure there were of lot of mexican americans in attendance, but I wouldn't go as far as saying it was 50%. Pac is a crossover star, freaking Miley Cyrus tweeted to complain about the Pac/Bradley robbery. If she's watching Pac then that means mainstream white america is watching Pac.
If you hols a boxing match in Texas, California, Arizona...my guess is there will be a sh1t load of Mexicans there.
hahah
That fight was in Dallas Texas, half of those in attendance were Mexican. there's A LOT of Mexican Pac fans in Texas.

Mexicans aren't people?
Also, how would you even know that?
Naming the two biggest stars in boxing over the last 20 years in Mayweather and Pac isn't really making you're point. Of course they sell out, they are the biggest stars.
You could say the same for Wlad and Vitali in Germany. Martinez in Argentina. Also I said Canelo so that makes three big names that sell stadiums in the US. The biggest stars sell stadiums. The Klits are the biggest stars in Europe, Martinez is the biggest star in Argentina, Haye is the biggest star in the UK, Mayweather and Pac are the biggest stars in the US.
You have to look at it over all, and boxing in the U.S has definitely declined when it comes to the avg show. I think someone tweeted that there was MAYBE 2,000 people to watch the Mathysse vs Peterson fight.
I mean that's a MAJOR fight in terms of what the boxing fan wants to see. Yet the place seemed empty.
It was hardly a MAJOR fight. And again it has to do with the promoters and the location they choose to stage these things. Lamont Sold out an 18k arena in Washington against Khan. They could have staged it there but no they wanted Casino money. Likewise, Donaire vs Rigo should have been staged in Miami.
You say that boxing fans are 85% white, well I don't know where you get that stat from #1 and if you actually go to a boxing event where a Mexican is fighting, the place is full of Mexicans....lol
The latest study on boxing's demos is here. It covers 16 million avid boxing fans in the US. I mispoke though, it wasn't 85%. Of the 16 million avid boxing fans covered in the study 4 million are Hispanic, 3 million black, 250k Asian with the rest being white. All in all 8-9 million of avid fans are white.

This study does not cover the over all fan base which is 50 million, only the avid fan base of 16 million.

I think the avg American wants to sit at home and watch the fights on his nice comfy couch and hi def tv. That's where the money is as well, in tv, not attendance. I just think it's a bit ironic that the boxing fan complains about these promoters not making the fights they want to see, but don't get up off their fat asses to go and watch these fights.
Can't have it both ways.
You clearly misunderstood. It has nothing to do with ratings or money, I was speaking about actual attendance, I just think American fans are horrible in that respect.
It also depends on the fighters, you mention Germany but every time a Klitchko fights, they sell out stadiums there.
Honestly, if it wasn't for the Mexican fans base in the U.S, it would be even worse. I went to a Mexico vs U.S.A friendly and it was 90% Mexicans in the stands, no exaggeration.
I don't see how you decided I missed your point.
Manny has proven he can sell out stadiums. If he wasn't being paid extra to fight in Vegas he could sell out a stadium in every fight. Mayweather could potentially too if he fought out of the casinos, and lowered his ticket prices. Canelo only just sold out a stadium event against Trout. There are other boxers who could sell out arenas if their promoters stopped jamming them into Vegas and put them into places they would actually sell e.g Rigo should be fighting in Miami no Vegas. He's already a big name among Cubans there.
Also, boxing fans in the US are about 85% white.

I don't know about that, Pac drew 50 000 fans twice when he fought Clottey and Margarito. If the big stars fought in stadiums more often in the U.S. you would see things like that on a regular basis.

Not that much exposure for boxing to the wider public in the US is there? You probably get more free-to-air fights and/or a stronger club scene in other countries.
Nothing to do with the fans. Boxers make more money fighting in Casinos in Vegas and on HBO/Showtime. 3.9 million tuned in to see two unknown boxers fight on NBC. I don't think that many would tune infor that even in a place like Germany.
The only thing close to HBO and Showtime in a place like the UK would be Sky sports, and now Boxnation perhaps. When you see the kind of ratings a lower level guy like Fury can pull, it's clear to see how these over paying niche networks choke off the fan base. Just imagine the ratings Khan, Froch and Haye would pull fighting on the BBC. Same thing in the states.

The actual Martinez fight got between 30-35 points (first bell rang around 22:00), but the average got bogged down by the undercard. It also aired live in TYC sports, which got another 10 points. So it's closer to 45 points overall.
Matthysse's last fight only got 2.3 sadly.
I have always said this, foreign fans are so much better than American fans. I don't know why, maybe it's because we have so much going on here but it seems that the biggest sporting events take place OUTSIDE of the U.S when it comes to attendance.
Excluding the Super Bowl of course.
