I love the sport but think it's clearly disorganized and messed up. Between the fighters, promoters, networks, useless belts, transparent weight classes, doping agencies, etc more and more factors come into play from preventing fights.
To make matters worse, us, the fans instead of doing something about it seem to cheerlead for whatever fighter, promoter, etc instead of doing anything about it. I understand people don't give a **** to take action but then why complain or point fingers?
So for the intelligent ones on the site, how would you reform boxing? In a perfect world that is. We all know too much money and corruption is behind the sport but if we could change it..
I'll start..and i'm not saying my solution is the best one by any means..
-One Boxing League or Association, one ranking system as it is in Tennis or Golf. (I don't follow either, but obviously it works) (Prevents Cherrypicking)
-Obviously divided between the weight classes
-One doping agency
-Cities and networks bid to host fights
-Events have multiple class headliners
-Promoters, trainers, fighters, etc have their own teams as in MMA or Racing. For example Team Top Rank, Money Team, Team Roach, Team Redbull whatever the case is. Obviously fighters within teams still fight each other.
-You have to be affiliated with a Team to fight
-Restrictions on moving up or down in weight classes. (Prevent cherry picking)
Just curious as to what your ideas are..
I would only change one thing and one thing only: Make all the professionals wear headgear

Khan would then be a huge threat!
No more PPV. how many people would watch an NBA/NFL/NHL/Soccer championship game if it cost them $60.00 just to watch it on TV???? PPV has hurt the sport.
Well, if a network could give $230 million for six fights to just one guy, there's no reason why you can't spread that amount and offer it to deserving fighters over a two year period. One fight every weekend is not impossible with that kind of money. So for starters, cancel the guy's contract and let him retire. Boxing will be better off without him.
It'd be a good idea.
I only disagree with the weight classes. A standard difference of 10 lbs for every class between 110 and 180 is not fair in my opinion. 10lbs for a 100lbs fighter is 10% of his total body weight, while it'd be around 5% for a 180lbs fighter.
I'd go, roughly , 112lbs, 118lbs, 126lbs, 135lbs, 147lbs, 160lbs, 180lbs, 200lbs, 200+
I like the concept of taking into account proportion but 160-180 is too large of a gap.
have one unbiased ranking agency and the top 8 in each division fight in a tournament every year. next year tournament starts over with different rising guys or some of the same guys depending on how they did. this will prevent duckers who are ranked #1 from cherry picking easy competition and staying on top. you have to prove yourself every year. anyone who says they can't fight because their opponent lives too far away is immediately kicked out of boxing.
I would have a government run agency run boxing. Like a boxing Czar.
Second I would force promoters to have inter promotional fights or have their licenses revoked.
I would lastly, have the way appointing judges changed, and if they make a bad decision, would be banned from boxing after let's say, 3 bad dec.
Some great posts in this thread but these two jump out.
The fundamental problem in boxing is the lack of a centralised, accountable authority. As it is now, any organisation or integrity is impossible because you have all these different shysters under-cutting each other.
If anyone tries to set some standards, some other bunch of gangsters sweep in and say 'fu*k those standards, come work with us'. See the Texas Commission for an example.
I'd have 2 sanctioning organizations instead of 5 (merge WBC and IBF, and merge WBA, IBO, and WBO).
I'd have 10 weight divisions instead of 17. Something like this:
Flyweight 110
Bantamweight 120
Featherweight 130
Lightweight 140
Welterweight 150
Light middleweight 160
Middleweight 170
Light Heavyweight 180
Heavyweight 200
Super Heavyweight +200
(I'd rename cruiserweight "heavyweight" and rename heavyweight super-heavyweight).
And I'd have same-day weigh-ins.
It'd be a good idea.

I would have one sanctioning body .
9 weight classes
15 round championship fights .
Same day weight in's
drug test in all championship fights
3 judges to judge referee on his performance
rank referees
on judges for boxing match use electronics for scoring .
Today electronics are so advanced you could have one very small censor on the back and on back of head that could pick up a punch that glanced and tell how hard it landed. Hooked up to a computer there would be no doubt who landed the most and hardest punches .
There are lots of good ideas here but keep it simple is the best rule . What pisses me off more than anything is scoring .
I wouldn't have one title per weight class, although it does make sense.
I would have 2 titles per weight class...WBC and WBO for example...
The commission should have control over all fighters, and if a fighter can not fight someone ranked in the Top 5 than he shall be stripped of any titles and possibly ranking.
I would remove alot of in-between weight classes.
Legalize steroids. No round limits. Fights can only end in KOs or until one person quits.
I'd block the Klitschko, Mayweather, Pacquiao and Margarito fans from posting on boxing sites. These fans would have to pass Boxing 101 before they can enter any forum.
Fixed.

I don't follow MMA can you please explain this "team" system?
It's really just a bunch of guys train together, wear the same sponsored gear, same trainers.

One belt, one organization, anything else is complete non-sense. Anything else defeats the point of a champion...
Basically structure it like the UFC with one organization controlling the fights. No catchweights, standardized drug testing, add two judges to make it 5 judges per fight.
No ****bags like Arum, Haymon, King, etc making **** fights that no one wants.
I would have two belts per division rather than 4 sanctioning bodies. Why not one? I think two is a good compromise as it still allows more scope for fighters to earn. Plus if a fighter is through no fault of his own injured and needs time off, I think he should be allowed without being stripped or putting the whole division on hold. Plus it still allows unification fights and these would be quicker and easier to make, eg. If two fighters are holding their sanctioning body strap for a period of 12 months (most likely 2-3 defences) then they should be forced to unify. Once a title has been unified you also get the effect of having one champion, and if he is not active enough, the likely result is he would be stripped of one of the straps, but not both so still retaining his world title status. If he chooses to relinquish then again the same result, but it gives the next two highest ranked guys a shot for that sanctioning body title. You would just get a quicker turnover and it would force fighters to take the biggest challenges out there.
That is the main change I would make, it would be easier for casual fans to follow, whilst still allowing
One world wide sanctioning body with 1 set of rankings, one belt per division etc. Minimium of 1 defense per year versus number 1 contender. Exceptions to this in the rare event of say the cruiserweight champ challenging the heavyweight champ, though by rights such things shouldn't require exceptions and could just be voluntary defenses.
So you have 1 title holder.
And a number 1 contender
And then the next six in a super six style competition(could be turned into a 'super 8' so you then have the whole top ten accounted for) to determine the next number one contender. ... If it was super six it would work like this:
Top guy in this comp becomes new number 1. Previous number 1/former champ slips down into this for next years comp. 3 guys come up (replace bottom three who slip int a similiar comp for ranks 10-20) two guys remain (guys who came second and third in the comp (increased to four guys if 'super eight')
(Could also be adjust to a 'super four' if the above results in too many fights ... though imo a whole bunch of quality top ten fights appeals to me.)
Same day way in.
Uniform and extensive doping tests
13 round title fights
No titles can be lost/won at a catchweight
Less weight classes ... u know instead of light welter, welter and super welter .... just light welter and welter TOPS and maybe even just welter?
And a MASSIVE NO to the people asking for a 'super heavyweight division' which is a pants idea. We need fewer weight divisions not more with like 8 or 9 guys in em. The whole idea of a super heavyweight division is pointless anyway as you can fight in the top division no matter what you weigh so all it would be is simply renaming heavyweight to super heavyweight and wtf is the point in that. I think people these days have let the Klits blind them ... they are only two guys ... after them how many of the top guys are super heavyweights and how many are 'normal heavyweights' like say Povetkin? Who doesn't think say haye or Povetkin would beat any and all of these super heavys baring the klits themselves?
I would only have one King in each weight division and there would be no draws they would have to fight a 13th round. If one of the judges robbed a fighter of a victory that judge would have to pay fees and would get suspended from judging fights with no pay. So call it like most people see it or get fired. These fighters work to damn hard for these judges to be robbing these fighters without no punishments.
Winner winner chicken dinner ! I've always thought of that as the best way to do it. How long does it take to tally the scores it simple math ? If the fight is even after 12 ... One final round and judges can't score said round even. I don't even know how they landed on 12 rounds to begin with if they wanted to go down from 15 the logical choice would've been 13 or 11 but whatever.

Super Heavyweight +200
(I'd rename cruiserweight "heavyweight" and rename heavyweight super-heavyweight).
And I'd have same-day weigh-ins.
I'd probably tweak the super heavy division and make it 220-230 +. It still doesn't stop guys who from outweighing guys by 30 pounds and having a couple inches on them, both height and reach.
