Anyone who says Floyd is overrated is not worth having a conversation with btw. Only a person who knows nothing about boxing would let personal feelings come in to make a ridiculous claim like that. That is like saying JMM or Ward is overrated lol, absurd.
Most overrated fighters to me are:
-Devon Alexander (no real power, does a lot of shoeshines that miss or hit gloves and arms, has gotten 2 100% BS decisions over Kotelnik and Matthysse, gets hit a lot/defensive gaps, has questionable heart and stamina.)
-Danny Garcia (is a limited fighter, tough but wins simply because he is bigger and stronger than his opponents for the most part, solid fighter but not a P4P. I don't see him fighting Floyd at all really.)
-Carl Froch (many may disagree due to his chin, heart, opponents and toughness but skillwise he is very limited. Slow, flat footed/plodding, no defense, good solid fighter but has got the benefit of a few gift decisions.)
Even though Donaire got outclassed I don't necessarily think he was that overrated, he is still a great fighter.
Currently, Matthysse, GGG, Rigondeaux, and Canelo are all being pushed too hard. All are truly excellent fighters (save for maybe Canelo) but fanaticism has gone beyond reason to borderline worship.
Matthysse definitely. People go on as if he is some unbeatable monster that killed all of the 140lbers and should be getting a shot at Mayweather et al.
Trout was getting hugely overrated pre-Canelo.
Mayweather.
hes thoroughly and legitimately hated (and understandably). he gets trashed daily. people tune in to see him lose. no one wants to pay for his fights, only stream them. its always the next guy that is supposed to beat him. his skills are undeniable.
now you explain to me why you wrote mayweather...
Floyd mayweather, he you say anything bsd against the wife beating ugly mofo you can banned.
If Wlad was American he would be considered the goat of all time, fact.
goat?
nah.
he and his brother would be huge stars. two brothers who simultaneously defend the HW title? if they were american they would be huge stars.
I think most fighters get sufficient levels of over the top, borderline deranged abuse to stop them ever getting too overrated around here.
:lol1:
borderline, you say?
Floyd mayweather, ife you say anything bad against the wife beating ugly mofo you get banned.

Cherrypicking has everything to do with it. Visit Abner Mares for proof. Stellar resume/wins, but is underrated beating world class fighters. Those 2?? Uh huh. Not much lately outa either.
i was thinkin more along the lines of skills and generalship, but if you wanna choose the laundry list of opponents, then every single fighter in the world can be considered overrated. your Mares comment is true, but to someone else, it could mean nothing and he could be an overrated cherrypicker. its all opinion, but based on skill, neither floyd nor pac are overrated. agree?
You make plenty of fair points here, NE. One fact remains, however: Rigondeaux convincingly proved his worth against a top-five P4P fighter, thereby demonstrating that he was never really overrated in the first place. Had "El Chacal" lost badly, he then would've been overrated.
again, you're talking about potential. he's always looked like he had potential. he had some very bad rounds, and people forget them. he almost lost to ricardo cordoba, who was at the end of his career. he beat rico ramos and the reaction was ridiculous. they were talking about a fighter with great potential like he was a great fighter. that's overrating him. a fighter is judged by he accomplishes and how he performs, not his potential. i think most of it came from his amateur background, but also because there was a huge backlash against the major promotors at the time for not making the pacquaio-mayweather jr fight. that sounds crazy, but that's how this place works. it could have been anybody, but nsb chose rigondeaux as one of it's underdog heroes.
we're talking about NSB, not the general consensus of knowledgable fans. we don't need to get into a discussion of semantics, but it's important to recognize the distinction for our discussion.
this is a thread about NSB, and the ridiculous rigondeaux rhetoric here started after that fight.
what rigondeaux had done until the donaire victory was overrated, which is what i said in my post. his skills and abilities were overrated, at least in terms of his ability to be effective as a professional boxer. it's fine to say you saw potential. anybody who watches boxing could tell that he had a ton of talent / potential. his performances in the pros before that fight were overrated. he needed to get a big pro win to validate it, and until then he hadn't. he often fought like a fighter who had ~ 10 pro fights, but people would forget that and only remember the few spots / rounds where he looked spectacular. he had never looked that good consistently, nevermind against a world class fighter. before the donaire fight his performances were overrated. that was the first time he had put everything together for 12 rounds, and against a top fighter to boot.
i'm not saying that he's overrated now, but he was overrated on nsb from the time he beat ramos to the time he beat donaire.
