Just want to add, the guys you mentioned in particular, I wouldn't consider defensive. I have gotten in to this argument before, that fighters like Pep, Whitaker, prime Jones, and all of those elusive fighters considered "defensive" aren't really defensive, more like elusive and relied on their reflexes rather than the fundamentals of boxing defense. These guys would break the laws of physics with the sh*t they do. When they slowed down, they were no longer the same fighters.
Who are the REAL defensive fighters?
Winky Wright, Bernard Hopkins, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Andre Ward, Guillermo Rigondeaux.
I would actually classify these fighters as defensive. And I can not picture either of these fighters, Winky, B-Hop, Mayweather, Ward, Rigondeaux being brain damaged or anything like that when they are old. Because they are actually fundamentally defensive, not defensive in an elusive-only manner.
Good post and just to add, Whitaker is a vegetable because of all the drugs that guy did.

Pernell Whitaker does not fall into that category, his defense was far more versatile than Winky's as well, it left for more counter punching opportunities.
That's because JCC Sr had a good defense, and Duran's defense was actually great, he knew how to roll punches. Margarito suffered a detached retina and I can't even remember the last time I heard him speak, as foul of a human being as he was I do wish the best, but the type of punishment he took I do fear it may catch up with him. You are right about Morales and Castillo though.
Margarito was 100% healthy and coherent in interviews at the Pacquiao-Marquez presser.
JCC Sr., Manos de piedra, Antonio Margarito, El terible, Castillo have all been in great wars and as far as I know have not had any sort of diseases.
Maybe it's the latino in them.

Good post, I never really thought of it like that.

Cool little speech/rant from BHop, but isn't he fighting an unknown on ESPN? There are many styles in boxing and he shouldn't be offended or upset that fans prefer the things that BHop doesn't do, like being exciting. Oh and please stop ducking Ward.
The only weird thing, is the fighters I hear that come out the sport with such illness are the defensive-type fighters.
James Toney? Whitaker? I heard Meldrick Taylor too? Muhammad Ali?
Weird huh.
I mean Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. is doing fine, I believe he's even a spanish commentator.
Pep and Benitez too. Taylor wasnt a defensive fighter though.
Its a very odd, sad phenomenon.
