Then please tell me why Joe Louis fought 9 opponents (!!!) twice in his pro career. Because he did.
Isn't that somehow a sign of how weak a division is when a top guy has to fight the same guys twice over and over again ?
Wlad fought Brewster, Byrd, Tony Thompson and Sam Peter twice, while Joe Louis fought all of these guys twice:
Jersey Joe Walcott, Arturo Godoy, Max Schmeling, Billy Conn, Buddy Baer, Bob Pastor, Lee Ramage, Natie Brown, Abe Simon.
But oh, I forgot, Schmeling is one of the greatest because he beat Joe Louis, right? So there is no shame in fighting him twice, right?
And Corrie Sanders (may he RIP) is called a bum on here even though he beat Wlad. So let's sum it up: Schmeling became a Hall of Famer for beating Louis and Klitschko is called a bum for "losing to a guy like Sanders".
Joe Louis fought so many bums that when he ran out of bums, he fought some bums twice.
But this current era is the worst ever, right?
I don't really know how terrible those opponents were tbh. I don't have an opinion on this.
gr8 post m8. really informative. you changed my whole life.
Why don't you add this as your signature:
You know whats sad? When their careers are over Louis will have still fought and beat more HOF fighters. :lol1:

Sanders never beat a top 10 ranked fighter before or after Wlad...Schmeling did.
Joe Louis didn't have a brother to help him. I have to say the way some posters here outright disrespect of past champions is appalling and should be an indicator that they are not fans of the sport rather fans of a specific fighter.
Well the Billy Conn first bout was very close as Conn was winning up until the late stoppage.
He lost to Schmeling the first time.
Many felt the Walcott decision was unfair, hence the rematch there.
He only defeated Godoy by Split Decision the first time, hence the rematch.
He only beat Buddy Baer by DQ in the first bout, hardly convincing, a rematch isn't crazy after that.
The Abe Simon rematch was a bit lame and unwarranted, he did nothing between the two fights. I'll give you that one.
The Brown and Ramage fights took place early in his career before he held the title so who gives a flying f*ck if he fought them twice?
So was the first Pastor fight, the second one was an early title defence less than 3 months after his previous one so it's not some crazy sin that he's fighting a less than great opponent if he fights 5 times a year. Pastor had done a little bit of work in between the 3 year period between the two bouts. Nothing to go crazy about though.
You made the exact same post a few months ago and I replied with something similar but less in depth than this, I hope this answers your question this time.
Actually, boxing was a much more full time profession back then than some journeyman today.
I read something on Bert Sugar saying the reason so many fighters had 100+ fights back then were because the purses were to small to rest on your laurels and you had to fight several times a year just to make a decent living. Popular fighters like Louis were able to make big purses and so didn't have to fight as often (shame he messed up with taxes). But it's true that alot of Louis were not world class fighters.
I'm not denying that's untrue, but he was fighting in the depression. The likes of Braddock came from that cloth, people had to sweep the streets, butch, work the docks and fight in the spare time. I've recently seen a documentary on some of Louis' opponents, will find it for you.
I'm not taking anything away from Louis, I have him as #2 greatest hw of all times, but some of his fights, even after he won the title, were against guys who had to fight to support their families as an extra job to their normal day job.
In terms of greatness, Louis wins. He has some great wins, some over a lot of bums of course due to the time he was fighting where professional boxing was not a full time job for many.

Never thought I'd give a David Haye fan green K but I guess I will now.
Joe Louis was The Heavyweight champion though. Wlad is merely a title holder with his brother.
Joe Louis didnt need a 6'8 sibling to help dominate a weak division. He did it alone. So yeah a guy who dominated single-handedly is always going to be more impressive than the combined efforts of two.
Joe Calzaghe on the other hand....
He fought everyone and all challengers in his prime vs... their past it sell by date!
HYPOCRITE FAN AT THERE BEST RIGHT HERE!!
They were both bum of the month club champions. Lots of other champions fought many bums too. Its all apart of boxing. Louis gets a lot of love, because of the second Schmeling fight (US vs Germany) and for the fact he went into the Army during the war. I think if they fought each other, Wlad would win. He's way bigger, but I think Louis' knockouts were more spectacular to watch.
Louis' size is underestimated to be honest.
Not only would have been able to gain more lean effective muscle mass with modern training, decent nutrition through formative years could have increased his height by a good few inches (average height of America has gone up by around 3-4 inches in the last hundred years).
Wlad would have been bigger but it wouldnt have been a superheavy vs a light heavyweight like some people think.

Since when is "Sanders Wlad's best opponent"? Last time I read threads here Sanders is a joke and Wlad is a joke for losing to a joke like Sanders.
Very few consider Sanders a bum, very talented imagine if he took the sport more seriously

Because Louis was the good black who loves the nation and army and beat the evil Hitler's man , so if he wasn't given money , he should be given some legacy at least
FYI, No one knows the name of Louis outside the states

My opinion , both are good boxers but never to be one of the ATG .
You say no one outside the states knows Joe Louis, but start your post with a guy outside the states who knew Joe Louis...

Really? Not to beat a dead horse but..... honestly? Klits most known in the states for dating Hayden P among casuals, but they know who Louis is, believe me.
