"Darchinyan will starch him"
"Hes no match for Agbeko"
"Moreno boxes circles around him"
"PDL will crush him"
time to give the kid his props, hes one of todays best and most exciting fighters. Hes versatile, quick, and has power. He looks to have grown exceptionally well at 126. If you can't recognize, you're simply not appreciative of someone who is putting in the effort and work of a great fighter.

For me the Deleon win was as impressive as any win Mares has had.
Props to him!
its the only impressive win to me.
most of abner other fights were close fights and then we had the issue of the low blows and i personally never thought to much of moreno i have been waiting for i fight to be reaaly impressed by abner and the de leon fight did it for me
Mares is a good fighter but no way he can defeat Rigo. By the way, Rigo already easily outboxed Mares, as you can read in Mexican press http://goo.gl/VJPdL
IMO Rigo would win by KO within in 6 rounds
Right. Well, I didn't say he'd beat him. I'd still favor Rigo comfortably. I'm just giving Mares little more of a chance, and against Donaire, who I'd also favor in that fight.
Mares ain't "tailor made" for anybody. Folks wanna push this story about him growing into a different fighter against Ponce down our throats but the reality is Mares has always been more complete than we have given him credit for.
In each of his last 6 fights he's been forced to make adjustments and he has done so effectively. I don't see him beating Rigo but i still agree based off merit and resume he is a p4p talent.

I've only picked against him once (Moreno), and I was pretty impressed with his performance. He showed more than I thought he had, and I'll only pick against him again if he fights Rigo. That fight probably won't happen anyway, so it's all good.
not a fan of his constant fouling..and i still think he's tailor made for guys like rigo and donaire. but congrats on his ponce win..i had a feeling he could beat ponce if he fought smart rather than charging iin head first (like he did against moreno)..all ponce really has is his power anyways.
I still like Mares chances against Rigo and Donaire. He is still the only one out there that can fight evenly with these guys.
He fought a high level of competition but he doesn't have a dominant performance against Vic Perez and the first Agbeko fight that has been keeping him out of the rankings.
The Moreno fight said a lot about him adjusting his fight game to win
The thing I really admire about Mares is that he doesn't define himself or give his style a label.
He drastically adjusts from fight to fight and does what it takes to win no matter what.
The difference in the way he fought Moreno and the way he fought Ponce was unbelievable.
Rigo is the best from 118 to 126... by far
I didn't like the stoppage so much, but I liked some of the things Mares did versus Ponce, he impressed me in some areas. I once said it would be easy work for Rigo, I don't necessarily retract it, but I give him more of chance. He's definitely proven himself as a capable fighter and it looks like he continues to improve :boxing:

I've now changed my mind about Abner Mares. I will be the first to admit, that I wasn't initially convinced that he could handle Nonito's punching power and skill for supremacy of the 122 lbs division. However, after his dismantling of Daniel Ponce Deleon; Who is a naturally larger and stronger boxer with excellent punching power. I now believe that a fight between himself and the "Filipino Flash" is a 50/50 toss up. Mares displayed exceptional boxing ability and power against one of the harder punches in the 126 lbs division. Overall, I was very impressed with his performance.
